This was quite the recovery out of Canyonlands National Park on the Elephant Hill Trail. Driver said he had ripped the whole front axle out of his jeep. After seeing pictures we decided to take the wrecker, the jk, and the recovery trailer and the whole crew in after it. It went rather well considering the remote location and the extent of the damage done to the jeep.

If there was an annual Oscar for best recovery video, this would be my nomination. The way the team dealt with the tight turns and steep slopes was phenomenal. And those front wheel digs, and placing of rocks looked so casual, just an ordinary day for someone with those highly developed driving skills. The whole video made experienced rock crawlers look like beginners. To add to all that, great video editing. I felt as if I was walking alongside the rigs. The best ever.

We were in Devils Kitchen for 3 nites, when this happened. We ran into X, ranger who hiked down to review & take photos of the vehicle, axle, and resource damage. I'd not seen this video until today. The right angle in SOB corner after one comes N out of Bobby's Hole is difficult enough for 4 wheel vehicle, but with a trailer behind. Kudos to the excellent work of the Moab "trail mater" who pulled "the whole job off". Both vehicles, axle and dead vehicle.

I was out there when this guy crashed his Jeep. We were driving down this straight section when this dood is coming at us at serious speed, sees us thankfully, locks up his breaks, does a 6 point turn with no regard for going off trail, and blasts off in front of us going crazy fast. We keep driving in that direction and 1/2 mile down the trail we come upon him and his buddies and they tell us about the crash. This guy had his kid in the passenger seat, super lucky no one got hurt in this very remote area. He says in the video he was going 45. I estimate more like 80. His buddies told me he put a corvette engine in the Jeep and was testing it out.

Rory, you don't know us, we are silent watchers. Rarely comment on anything. But as old as it is, I am commenting. As usual, your skills prevailed. Awesome job. I want to say, this is Micki's husband, not Micki. I have been wheeling since the 70's. I always appreciate your work and your appreciation for our National Parks. We are from Texas and feel the same. This episode pissed me off, not at you, it seems you always do the right thing. It's the idiot that did this. First, he risked the lives of everyone with him. Second, he destroyed areas meant to be untouched, third, this is what gets parks closed, stupidity. Fourth, its his Jeep and he has a right to do what he wants to it, providing he does not harm others or harm the beauty of our natural parks. He in fact dredged a new trail, busted up his Jeep causing it to leak oil and catch fire. Its shamefull. While it is his Keep and his business its disgusting, we own a built Gladiator, a built JK, and a TJ rock crawler, among other things, I do not condone destroying the land or wasting an 80k Jeep. Just because he has money, doesn't mean he needs to shove it in the face of capable people that would appreciate a rig like that. He has no business in this sport and should be banned from coming into a park or anywhere else. His actions make it hard on everyone that just want to have a good time responsibly. I want to say, we appreciate your work again, you did an awesome job, hope you charged the hell out of him for risking your lives and taking care of nature to save his now, wrecked Jeep.

A masterful recovery. I wish you'd been around 20 years ago when I blew the front hubs on a 93 ford ranger trying to get back up SOB hill to go home. We ended up having to drag it back through beef basin and up onto Horse Mountain before we could get it to a tow truck. It took 6 or 7 hours to get it out. The next time I went up Elephant hill was in to break in my new 05 Rubicon. As we went up the trail, my dad looked at me and said "you took your old pickup up this?!" It's a memory I'll never forget.

@mmartian1969
@mmartian1969 2 жыл бұрын
@@GOLDVIOLINbowofdeath where he disconnects the rear drive (usually in the transfer case) so that only the front axle has power. By putting the rear brakes on, and turning one way you can basically walk the front end in that direction without driving forward. Kind of hard to explain but you can see him do it in a few spots where he points the front end in a different direction without moving forward or reverse.

"My name is Paul and I want to say thank you for allowing me to sit in with the group. I am, by definition, a "flatlander". During my 64 years of life I have parachuted out of high performance aircraft in the middle of the night, free climbed up cliff faces as the lead climber, been lowered into a glacier crevasse to be "rescued" by those learning how to do the task, I have been shot at and been in knock down drag out fights with crack heads, flipped and rolled a hot rod 2+2 Pontiac while a teen with a heavy right foot and a few other assorted events that are better off being un-said. Of those previous mentioned incidents, only a few have caused the "tingling of the balls" syndrome. But watching this magnificent feat of a vehicle recovery, of all things, activated that syndrome as the towed Jeep hung precariously close to edge on the return go at the up-hill switchback and the "wheelies" of Mater pulling the incline. I have a leveled 03' Z71 Tahoe on 33's that is setup to more to tow/do medium (non-rock) off roading than to go where the group seems to go to relax and to conduct business. I give you all the credit in the world for your passion, knowledge and abilities as you go about them in a completely relaxed "matter of fact" manner. This has been a truly entertaining AND educational video. You have my utmost respect."

What a beast of a tow rig, and an absolute GENIOUS driver at the wheel! Completely awesome to watch-----I couldn't miss a second of it. Keep recording, I am positive many people are going to also enjoy these trail recoveries......They make those sand " yank 'em outs" look like a beginner's course.

I love traveling in the Moab backcountry and recently did Elephant Hill. Thank you! Thank you for offering recovery services, but also for being conscious of the environmental impact of the recovery and for speaking about it in the video.

Rory, what a master of your machine! To make those switch backs is amazing the way you've mastered the switching transfercases from locked in or locked out, truly only done from skills. Rory you do things with your vehicle that appears to be unreal. Master off road recovery of any type of vehicle. Can't say enough about your abilities Rory.

I started watching Matt nearly two years ago, so I have seen him working in sand, mud, and snow. But this was the most challenging recovery I have ever watched, and I don't think anyone but Trail Mater could have done it. The challenge in most recoveries is getting them unstuck. The challenge on this one was just making it back to a road without destroying another vehicle or getting kil!ed/injured. Trail Mater, you are the man.

My first time here. Came from MORR. Fantastic depth perception, situational awareness, use of lock, unlock of axles. At times it looked like you were running turning breaks. I ran my 66 Bronco without doors often. Your "open door" policy leads to some severe dust baths. It looks like I couldn't have come for a better show of skill. Love your PSA and explanations. Throw the explanations in ahead of all the questions. Great job all.

The wife and I love Moab we drove through it 3 years ago headed back to Iowa from Arizona. We were mesmerized by all of its beauty. Your videos just enhance the beauty of Moab and give us so much information of places to take our Jeep when we are out there. Thanks so much for posting. You and your team are fantastic. We hope to make it to one of the Jeep Jamborees sometime.

Wow, I'm seriously impressed! The camera never really shows how steep some of those hills are. I have wheeled Elephant Hill twice, once in a pretty stock CJ7 with open diffs and college friends, and another time in a Jeep Commander with a 2 inch lift, family of 5, and camping gear roof top...both were challenging. I kept thinking hope we don't break down back here. It's interesting to see you make a recovery over the rough obstacles we were challenged by.

Very cool manoeuver at 2:30 mark (and several other spots too)... totally amazing how the recovery vehicles are evolving to match the off-road vehicle needs to be saved, they may have to re-think the need for those switchback signs 🙂... the damage to the jeep is even better than a speeding ticket... SOLID message about following rules and regulations... GREAT to see and hear that piece... I would LOVE to see the invoice for this recovery, the payment for stupidity... now you need to build winches or pusher rams on to your recovery trailer too 🙂... Trailmater is indeed an incredible BEAST 🙂... those BFG's sure take a beating... Thanks

This recovery is an amazing one. Breathtaking skills. I was holding my breath in all those sharp bends on your way up. Thinking “he’s never gonna make that one” and yet you did. Unbelievable you were able to drive not only your own rig, but on top of that towing something. Without the footage it’s almost unbelievable. You deserve the most RESPECT ever. BTW Your skills in filming and editing the VLOGs have progressed very much. Keep doing what you do. Skills grow and grow by doing it more and more.
