Thanks for watching this week's video on Crate Training A Puppy - Where To Put The Crate. In the comments, let me know where you put your dog's crate.

I'm using two crates - one in the main bedroom upstairs for night time, and another in the family room for when I leave the house. My 7 month old Pyrenees mix (Stevie Nicks) picked up on the crates very quickly and has no issue getting in them (with a little treat). Getting up and out in the mornings is a rush - out of the crate, on with the collar and harness, down stairs to the deck and then down again to the back yard. I do use an extended leash to help 'guide' her and avoid distractions. Fortunately, Stevie dashes down all the steps without an issue or accident.

I put my Diggs crate in my bedroom where there is a ceiling fan, shades to make it dark, and door to create quiet. It is not far from going potty outdoors too. It is a blessing for those 2-3 hour naps twice a day. I have used this location for the entire 8 months I have had my Rhodesian pup. (she is 10 months old). Thanks for all your training tips and ideas, which are so helpful and doable! Best.

Hello Pickles and everybody. And Michelle, I have watched a whole bunch of your videos and I will be getting a puppy soon. I have learned a whole lot about how to start training your puppy from day one and I will put it all into practice. I hope that you all are having a fine day and will watch your other videos as you make and release them. Have a good day and bye for now. Mark

My puppy is coming from a ranch a has been kept in a closed stable with his litter mates. I was going to place the crate in my walk in closet off my bathroom attached to my bedroom. Leaving the doors open. . He will be able use the whole tile area as a pen. I'll be about 20 ft from my front door and 35 ft from back door. My house is quiet.

Great video. Our two puppies are coming home in a little over two weeks. We have two playpens next two each other with a gap between the pens and the crates inside. We have covers for the crates, each puppy will have a snuggle puppy, a white noise machine between them, and an Adaptil plugin next to the pens. The pens are right next to the patio door, which is the door they will go out to the potty. The floor is tile so if they have an accident in their pen, we can clean it up quickly and completely. We are hoping this will help set us up for success.

What a great video! It really helps to see the variety of options and hear the students' experiences. We started with one crate, moving it from my office during the day to the bedroom at night, and Bitsy was fine with that. I finally bought an identical crate for the bedroom so I didn't have to keep moving it back and forth. She is now 19 months, loves her crates, and although she sometimes naps other places, she goes in the daytime crate with a favorite chew or for just some quiet time. Thanks, Michele for all the great training we have gotten from you!

We put our mini goldendoodle’s crate first in our room for the first couple of weeks when she was 7 weeks old. During the day, we would move it to an open tiled space connected to her play pen. Now we have the crate in our laundry room and put an old sheet over it. Our laundry room is like a long aisle, so we put the crate at the end against the wall. We have a baby camera to watch her too. Gigi likes it and goes in her crate on her own during the day. Gigi has a donut bed and another bed in other rooms that she naps in while we are home.

It sounds like Gigi has the perfect setup, and awesome work finding a spot that is just right for her.

I have a question for you. We are in a family room which is not by a door to go outside. It has a gate to block her from the rest of the house till she is potty trained. We are constantly take her outside probably every hour and we watch her like a hawk. But there is no way for her to tell US she needs to go potty. We put a bell by the gate an started using that but she plays with it. Any suggestions on how do we do this. We have been working on this for 2 weeks now. We figured she would start going to the gate when she needed to go out. HELP we are exhausted 😩 Thank you Rose
@HowToTrainADreamDog2 жыл бұрын
It sounds like we may have to go back and reintroduce the bells to her in a slightly different location. If they are accessible to use like a playtoy, your pup is not learning that they are a way to signal to you when she needs to go outside. Be sure to follow the tips in the bell training lesson. I just moved apartments, from the third floor down to the first, and my pup, Indiana, has experienced some major regression in his crate training. We had gotten better about it where with a Kong full of tasty treats he would go in, now it’s like I’m convincing him to jump off a cliff or something! Once he’s in the crate he’s perfectly calm but getting him in is a huge struggle. He wants so badly to sleep on the bed with me but when he does he’s up every two hours and driving me insane. Right now his crate is by the window and facing my bed. Since he sleeps fine in the crate I guess the position is okay, but he’s still not happy about going into it.

@@HowToTrainADreamDog thanks I’ve saved this to a list to watch. Indiana is 9 months old and while I know this is humanizing him, I think he believes he’s a big boy now and this doesn’t need to be in the crate overnight so he fights me on it. He doesn’t pee in the house and he doesn’t chew where he shouldn’t but he is anxious and feels he has to protect me and wakes me up all the time because he wants to play instead of sleeping through the night.

Is it late to start crate training for a 5 month old yorkie? Since we got her we never had one..
@HowToTrainADreamDog2 жыл бұрын
Great question, it's never too late to introduce something new like this to your pup. You may find that it takes a wee bit longer to work on crate training since it wasn't introduced to her when she first came home. No worries, we just take training at pup's pace. The games to work on this are in module 1 of our course, are you already enrolled?

How? The dogs start to whine if you change the location of the crate, especially if they can't see you. I have my pup for 3 nights already, I also want to move her but I'm living alone and I'm doing a renovation. Now I'm on the second floor until my bedroom downstairs is ready. So do I move her under the stairs after my bedroom is ready or do I do it now? And if I move her do I continue to wake up every two hours for potty brake, use pads, create a pen? Can someone give me advise that doesn't want me to pay? My pup will be 2 months old on the 29th of this month
@HowToTrainADreamDog3 ай бұрын
If your pup has only been home for 3 days we don't recommend moving the crate yet. She's probably still adjusting to the big change and simply getting used to her new home and the crate. Allow her to alert you if she needs to get out in the middle of the night. If she's not alerting you, and having an accident, then you can proactively get her out for potty. Check out our free New Puppy Starter Kit for some great advice. learn.howtotrainadreamdog.com/yt/new-puppy-starter-kit/

@@HowToTrainADreamDog thank you. She’s alerting me but have a big problem separating. Just for me to go to the toilet is a big problem. Last time she whined for 3 hours when I left her on the yard because I had to work.
@HowToTrainADreamDog3 ай бұрын
If she's not ready to be left alone it's important not to put her in that position or her separation anxiety will get worse. Take a look at this video for some tips on this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aJi2gphonbmle5Y

Hi Michelle, I'm new to your channel and i hope i get i can get advice on this. I live in an apartment with balcony on the first floor. I was thinking the balcony which could be an area for my new puppy to potty so i could set up the playpen/crate in the living room near the balcony door. However, is that actually a good idea? because, if i keep the balcony door closed, it means that my puppy wont be able to go to the potty area itself (due to reasons like If no one's at home or if the puppy wants to potty in the middle of the night). Should have i have a few potty areas (like pee pads indoor as well) or start with potty area entirely to indoor instead to avoid confusion for the puppy. Or that it is ok for my dog to hold its bladder later on for longer hour when it has better self control etc. What do you think? Thanks a lot!
