I removed the bedding from my 12 week old puppy’s crate today because it was fine until it wasn’t fine! 😉. She does better at night with the crate covered in front. It seems to reduce distraction and she settles well. I also started to take the collar off of her today. If I put a treat or two in the crate, usually she will go right in. So far so good….

I had 2 dogs for over 12 years. They were always together, slept in the same dog bed, always. They made 8 or 9 trips across Canada, on an airplane, in the same crate. They were happy together, but very agitated apart. So, in my opinion, it can work, very well, depending in the relationship the dogs have. I would not recommend it for larger dogs, but for smaller dogs, it was awesome for them!

You'll want the crate to be big enough that they can stand up, turn around and stretch inside without hitting any of the sides. Your best bet may be to purchase a wire crate that comes with a divider, so that you can expand it as your puppy grows!

I have a 7-month-old Jack Russel pup..who once in the crate, just hates it as soon as I shut the door and will start barking and crying when I leave the room.. I have tried feeding him in the crate with the door open ..leaving treats in it and sitting nearby.. and he will go in it to eat them and then out again..he's even gone inside the crate looking for them on his own even if they are not there.. But he NEVER stays there to rest..he has NEVER slept in it..and although I am mostly here with him and he does not need to go in except for maybe once a week....Sometimes I just can't take him with me and - he panics .. Now he has gotten to the point where he does not soil it while I leave him in there ..I mostly only go for an hour ..or 1 2/2 hours at the most, but he is a crazed animal when I get home..crying and absolutely hysterical..Please advise me how to crate train him properly so he won't panic when he has to be left in his crate.. I live alone - there is no one around who can babysit him if I have to leave the house without him.. I need him to learn that the crate is not dreadful - but a safe place to stay and rest.. You really seem the best in giving sound and sensible advice..So please..I beg you for help with this crate insanity.. ***Thanks in advance.. and No there are no doggy daycares here..I live in a rural part of France..This village doesn't even have a dog park.. Thanks, Cassie Callan

We are sorry to hear of the struggles in the crate. It sounds like you could use a little more guidance. Have you heard of our new mini course on crate training? More than just feeding in the crate, you can do fun training games that teaches your dog to be comfortable in the crate while you slowly increase the length of time he's in there. If he's panicking, then it's time to try something new to help him feel OK in there. We can definitely help you! courses.howtotrainadreamdog.com/crate-training-course

Thanks for this video! Should I have nothing in the crate for my 12 week old so she just lays on plastic floor/base of it? It’s a wire crate because she’s a giant breed dog/pup. Currently have a bed and a cloth pee mat under it. It’s my first night with puppy in crate and second Night having her home.

We recommend NO bedding or pee pads in the crate. It only takes a few minutes of chewing a blanket or pee pad to send a pup to the emergency vet with intestinal blockage - we've seen this happen too many times and want our pups to be safe. Until she is mature enough to have bedding in the crate, we would say to leave it empty. There are also many downsides to pee pads. They will likely become a chew toy and they also send the message that it’s OK to pee in the house or in the crate. This is not a mindset you want for the lifetime of your pup! You should check out our New Puppy Starter Kit (it's free!), it has tons of crate training and new puppy tips: howtotrainadreamdog.com

Hi there, thanks for the great video. I have a 10 week old puppy who is great in the crate when I'm around or when he can hear me. He's also fine going into the crate for a nap or when I'm having dinner and I need some time away from him. He will sleep through the night and be great. My issue is that he does not like going into the crate and watching me leave. He will panic immediately and we just had a horrible accident the other day when I left for 2 hours and I would like to avoid that happening again. How can I get him comfortable with me leaving alone? I sense he just wants to be around me all the time and unsure how to proceed. Thanks in advance, I'm happy to pay for a training plan or something for advice also.

Great video! I have a plastic crate that may be too large for the 8 week old pup coming in two weeks. I know a wire crate can be partitioned off to make more size appropriate but what can I to do with an oversized plastic crate? We have a 30-50 Lb size crate but the pup will be 10-12 lb when we bring him home. ( I can't afford another crate.)
@babyelmo202

This might be a “fine until it’s not fine” piece of advice, but it originally came from a Vet who I know. I told her my crate was too big and worried about not having a divider and she suggested putting a cooler/ice chest in the back of the crate to take up space and prevent puppy from getting to that side of the crate. So I have a metal crate with a 60 quart plastic storage container on one side. My pup is also coming home in about 2 weeks, fingers crossed my crate hack holds up. Good luck.
@HowToTrainADreamDog
@HowToTrainADreamDog 2 жыл бұрын
A crate that is too big or two small can cause discomfort and a negative association with the crate, so it’s important to use the right size. A crate that is too big could result in a puppy that goes to the bathroom in one spot and sleeps in another. Your puppy should have just enough room to stand up fully, turn around and lie down in his/her crate.
@HowToTrainADreamDog
@HowToTrainADreamDog 2 жыл бұрын
This is definitely one of those situations where "It's Fine Until It's Not Fine" applies! DIY crate dividers often do not hold up against curious puppies and could cause injury if the pup tried to squeeze themselves around or by it.

I have two puppies, both from the same litter. Their actually 13 months now and my boy is more part Rottweiler and Lab while his sister is more part Lab and Pitt Bull. He’s been going into his crate really well and is doing well all around. She on the other hand was going into her crate good but has suddenly stopped doing it at night and has just plain gotten naught all the way around since we’ve had her spayed. She’s always been our problem child and is on doggie Prozac because she’s so overly reactive to EVERYTHING! In fact the night we took her in for surgery I had to give her the shots to put her to sleep so they could do the surgery because she wouldn’t let anyone touch her. And we had to bring her home right after. I’ve been told to find a vet behaviorist to help us but that means a 3 hour drive one way for us. What do you suggest? Just wondering.

I'm so sorry you're pup is having such a hard time. Keep in mind she isn't giving you a hard time, she's having a hard time herself. So while our human brain considered this "naughty" she's actually telling us with clear indicators that something is not right, she isn't comfortable with something. I agree 100% a behaviorist is an ideal plan.they can help you get to the bottom of what's going on. Here is a company we highly recommend. If your puppy is crying, screaming or throwing up it means she's in panic mode. No new learning or adjustment will take place when she's in that state. It's time to take the training more slowly and build up to leaving her alone, but she's not ready for that yet. We have a good video that can get you started, including getting a few key tools that will help her, like the Snuggle Puppy. Then you can start on fun training games to help her develop more independence and crate confidence. Check out this video to get started, and then consider our online course for the training games. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWHVXnhph5iLipY 30 Days to Puppy Perfection: www.howtotrainadreamdog.com/puppy-perfection-course-learn-more/

Thank you for all your training help! My puppy does great at night time in the crate. During the day is another story. She doesn't like to be in there, even with her food. If I put her in when I know she is ready to nap, she fights the nap. She will whine initially, then settle, maybe doze a little, lightly and when she hears or sees me, begins to whine again. If I leave her in the kitchen that I have gated off, she will nap for 1 1/2 to 2 hours but never in the crate. I am not comfortable going out and leaving her in the kitchen, so I need her to be in the crate. I have not yet left her alone. However, tomorrow I need to. She is 11 weeks tomorrow and has been with us since she was 8 weeks. Any tips? Do I just keep doing when I am doing.

When used correctly with the proper training, crates are like cribs or playpens for babies and toddlers. They are used to keep your pup safe and out of trouble. Crates are the safest place for your puppy when you are away from home. Crates are never used as punishment.

A puppy pen is an area to keep your puppy safe while they can play without giving them too much space in the home. Too much room to roam can lead to accidents or chewing on things they shouldn’t. We want to limit the space a puppy has until they are trustworthy and have learned to hold their bladder or have graduated out of the chewing or destructive phase! Using a puppy pen is a great way to help your puppy stay safe while you are busy with household chores and you can't keep your eyes on them 100% of the time. A puppy pen is not for sleeping and napping. We keep our puppies in a crate for all naps and at bedtime. The space is more cozy and this helps them sleep instead of staying in play mode. This video can tell you about one possible set up for a pen. You may choose to keep the crate in/near it or it's fine to keep it separate too. Crate / Pen Setup: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2fYaGaOg8Slj7M

This depends on his age, his ability to hold his bladder and his comfort in the crate. Watch his natural schedule carefully to determine those thresholds and then with time and training you can increase his duration in the crate.

It will take a little trial and error to find the right morning routine for you and your puppy. But yes, you should get up early enough to make sure the puppy can get something to eat, pee and poo (more than once, possibly!), have some exercise, human engagement, a cool down and then is ready to go back in the crate when you leave. This schedule will need to be adjusted as he/she grows.

I have a 14 week labradoodle will not sleep in the crate; takes naps wherever we are. She has a snuggle puppy and a blanket. She barks all night long. When we first brought her home we would get up an let her out around 3am then it was difficult to get her back in the crate; we used a lot of treats. She eats at 6pm and we put her to bed at 11pm. We cover it at night and use the white noise machine. We play about an hour before bed; we use chewing; she goes out 15 minutes before bed. Now we put her to bed and do not get up to let her out. Once in the crate she freaks! We do not know what to do. We have a quiet house with no children. HELP!

Crate training is a life skill. When our pups go to places like the groomer or veterinarian, they're often placed in kennels when they can't be tended to. We wouldn't want their first experience in the crate to be in a stressful environment, as it could cause extreme stress. It will also be helpful if your pup were crate trained so that you can ensure his safety after his surgery! Our pups run the risk of tearing their stitches if they move too much post-surgery, which is why the veterinarian usually recommends crating for at LEAST the first 72 hours, up to 2 weeks.
