I had hoped to make this one part, but knew it wouldn't happen, so I hoped (against hope) for a two-parter. I can tell you right now, it's gonna be more than two parts, and I am-- contrary to what you see-- making an effort to be at least sorta concise.
Here I go, attempting to build an LCG chassis for an MST CFX-W, having no knowledge of how to do so, and absolutely 100% making it up as I go along. If this series wraps up with something that merely works as well as it did before I broke it, I will consider this a qualified success.
You can make a drinking game of it by taking a drink whenever I radically contradict myself, which happens like 5-6 times per video at the very least. I don't plan ahead or write things down. It's the best and the worst.

I'm so jealous, my whole purpose for becoming involved in RCS is my intentions to build my own frame rails to create my own custom rigs. So far I've accumulated materials studying existing designs made a few of my own on paper and I'm only inhibited by the acquisition of a capable bandsaw. I have made some small aluminum parts such as shock Towers inbody mounting brackets but I have yet to cut out set up frame rails of my own design. Go get them

Look around for a used Rockwell Bladerunner. It's basically a jigsaw built into a table, and you could easily fabricate anything you need on one. And as it uses jigsaw blades, you can cut aluminum, steel, carbon fiber, whatever. I fall back to 6061 because it's cheap and I can cut it on the tablesaw. If I'm going all in on a "final" part, I go for G10-FR4. 90% of the performance of CF for about 1/3 the cost (or less.)

My CFX-w I used the Samix shock hoops for more top shock locations and lower the rear body posts. I used KnK body mounts, eliminated all the battery and brace stuff in the rear for some threaded aluminum cross braces. (Really cleans up the rear). Purchased the MST side boards to hold a small battery on one side and electronics on the other side. I’m using the same shocks as you but trying them in the “droop” setup. I lowered the body posts one hole where the JConcepts Tucked hood is millimeters away from the motor. I like this project and seeing the MST get a little love. 👍

If those Samix towers hadn't been OOS fooooorrrreeeevvvvver I probably wouldn't even be doing this. I think they came back in stock for a few minutes, and by the time I went to try to add them to my cart at Amain, they were already gone.

had to pause vid. i'm at the part where you making the chassis rail template and i would like to see a truck with acrylic rails. i know it would be just all show but think a truck could look amazing with an acrylic chassis.

Honestly, with enough bracing it could work. I would likely go for polycarbonate over acrylic, as acrylic doesn't stand up too well against, like... anything. Hit it wrong and it cracks like glass.

For someone making it up as you go, the design sure looks pretty good. I'll be curious the impact of moving the skid down while the shocks stay mounted the same. I suppose this is not fundamentally different from the flat rail frames that some companies make for the Element or Axial kits. They typically will have shock towers built into the rails with more mounting options but I imagine the performance of yours will be pretty good! Looking forward to seeing how this one goes 👍

Back when I was building "go fast" stuff, my big 15" WB RWD SCT went through like 3 full "revisions," where the whole chassis got replaced, so I'm definitely considering this to be an iteration, not the final thing. This will probably be chock full of holes by the time it's "done."

Just buy a Gspeed chassis. And use an element or axial donor, i know its too easy and been done, but it works well. I wish i had your time and tooling.

As a person who makes things, I can tell you this: when you buy a product from... whomever you buy it from, you're not paying for the materials, you're paying for everything else, from the R&D to the tooling to the packaging and shipping. With few exceptions, the bulk of the cost of producing an item is the value of the time devoted to developing it. I love buying shiny new things as much as anyone else, but I can also conjure those things out of aluminum plate and skip all of the markups, so why not? I'm exceptionally adept at wasting time, so all of the R&D and labor on this "job" is free.
