"The 1-Up at 4:28 was a reward for backtracking, not entering the high speed warp tube upside down; that route was unintended/super bouncing to enter it that way was unintended" Super bouncing was only one of the ways that you could get up there. Remember the curved walls on the ceiling? They're perfectly designed for spindash jumps that'll nail you right onto the path. You also don't need super bouncing to reach the high speed warp tube since your regular bouncing has the exact amount of height needed to reach the bottom of the pulley platform. And with that, you can _easily_ take this route using mechanics that the devs assuredly knew about (unless they thought it impossible to spindash and jump right after, haha) Later in the level (15:54) we see an example of a high speed warp tube forcing you to be upside down regardless of what gravity you had when you first entered it, and yet the first high speed warp tube does _not_ force your gravity to be right side up, but instead allows your gravity to affect the way you pop out! Every reward for backtracking in this level, such as the electric shield at 12:26 or the Chao Box at 17:58 is simply placed on the floor, but the devs decided to have this 1-Up just be in some random hole? Nonsense! Its odd placement becomes a lot clearer when you observe how the hole is _perfectly_ lined up with the high seed warp tube in such a way that you'll land _precisely_ in the hole if you come out upside down. When I say it's _perfectly_ lined up, I mean it's _perfectly_ lined up. It's not off by even an inch! It's exact! Can you get the 1-Up by backtracking? Sure! But to say that the alternate route wasn't intended all? There's just not enough to support that in my eyes.
@elibonham43883 жыл бұрын
I agree, plus the devs hold many other secrets in the game with spin dash jumps and this route is faster than the regular route too Ala speedruns so that's another exsentive for taking this route over the other
@gameringly89163 жыл бұрын
It's possible the other speed tubes force a direction because their easier to get to in the wrong gravity and that they just didn't think it was possible to be upside down for this tube. Regardless its still awesome how it all lines up

I can say, as someone who’s played this game since their childhood, that my problem is not that it’s “bad”. My problem is I’d see the big ball robots that would reach out to you and the bright green goop that kills you, as well as the black, endless void of space that you could hopelessly careen towards with no way of escape, and it would scare me but I was too young to process and recognize that fear so I just internalized it until I got older and realized “Oh, that’s what I felt.” That being said, awesome video as always, glad to see you back!

SA2 gets hated on purely by scrubs who dislike difficulty. I blame the current era of Sonic games and the boost feature. Difficulty in gaming is meant to entice players to try harder. Scrubs hate the hunting stages too, they aren't even hard. (Meteor Herd and Mad Space are though) The majority of the hunting stages are small maps in which you can just run around until the radar starts beeping, also there are hint boxes that help you find the emerald shards. The game even sometimes spawns emerald shards close to your spawn location upon starting the level. The hunting and shooting levels were added to break the monotony of the same old "Gotta Go Fast" gameplay. Crazy Gadget is a perfect example of why scrubs bash this game, it requires you to stop and think and not just blindly boost to win.

@@UltimateShadow10 It's difficulty comes from it's jank, and heavily unpolished controls. Difficulty isn't a bad thing, but it needs to be purposeful, and intentional. When you have jank controls mixed with jank level design, it makes for a difficult experience that doesn't leave you enticed to play more. Just because you managed to learn how to play around the jank, doesn't mean that the game still isn't janky, and it's unreasonable to characterize those who dislike the game as "simply disliking difficulty." I love the Day Stages in Unleashed, and S Ranking them can be a bitch. But the difficulty comes from the level design, and how the programmers intended experience of S Ranking stages. The controls don't feel jank, (most of the time) unlike SA2, where a big part of the experience is learning to play around the incredibly janky controls, and awful button mapping.

The 1-up after the warp tube isn't there for when you leave the warp tube with upwards gravity, it's there to reward ppl for backtracking after shifting the gravity up in that same room. You aren't supposed to reach the room with upwards gravity already active. The Super Bounce glitch isn't intended by the devs. It's just coincidence that you get ejected right onto the 1-up, it's placed there to reward backtracking
@zoomzike3 жыл бұрын
Super bouncing was only one of the ways that you could get up there. Remember the curved walls on the ceiling? They're perfectly designed for spindash jumps that'll nail you right onto the path. You also don't need super bouncing to reach the high speed warp tube since your regular bouncing has the exact amount of height needed to reach the bottom of the pulley platform. Later in the level we see an example of a high speed warp tube forcing you to be upside down _regardless_ of what gravity you had when you first entered it, and yet the first high speed warp tube does _not_ force your gravity to be right side up, but allows for both. Lastly, taking the high speed warp tube while upside down _perfectly_ drops you into the 1-Up spot. It's not off by even an inch, it's exact. Not only this, but a spring bounces you right back up to continue on the route. With everything I said, I feel that the devs demonstrated _some_ kind of intent for the _GIGACHAD_ route. Can you get the 1-Up by backtracking? Sure! But that doesn't discount this other method of getting it as well, especially with the 1-Up being placed in such an odd way compared to other backtracking rewards. Ty for the comment

Hm, halfway through this video... and it seems that most of the cool tricks of this level involve having the ancient light power up (which is an optional and hidden ability, and unlikely to be found on a first playthrough) or super bouncing (which appears to be a hidden trick of the game that is never mentioned by omochao, even if it may have been noticed by the devs, considering the hidden power ups). So for most players, the first taste they get of this level is of the "main path", which has many issues, like "unavoidable" abyss traps and damage traps (well, unavoidable if you don't see them coming or are taking it slow). The fact that it feels so bad to play the first time through, makes people not want to replay this level again, and thus, not find all of these interesting things about the level. I never knew there were alternate paths in this level, and I like the thought, but I think it's too little, too late, for most players. I still don't like it lol

Aaack I love this series ZZ and this isn't directed at you I promise but _no_ one seems to know how the Light Attack works in this game. This level is full of so many enemies primed for it - you're totally invincible until the attack ends so any zappy enemies or Artificial Chaos in your way can always be Ready-Go!ed into scrap... but only _reliably_ if you hold forward while using it. If you do that, all that loopy, spinny randomness goes away after a single orbit. This can even be a reliable way to cross that gap led by the shield-bot, since you won't be in ball-form at the Light Dash trail and therefore aren't at risk of Bouncing into goop. Also it's infamously well-known by now but all the faith in the world doesn't mean you _have_ to use the rings spilling off into the abyss. I will be fair and say most of my hate for this level comes from the absolute monstrosity that is Crazy Gadget's hard mode which has Artificial Chaos, an extremely annoying enemy everywhere and the spring at the end of the stage which just kills you if you try to use it to go back to the start of the maze on the chance you missed the switch for the rocket. For me though the biggest issues with this stage is how it brings out all the rough edges of sonic's gameplay with both the stage design and the awful gravity gimmick. The gravity switches already cause a lot of stop and go which is not a good set up for sonic gameplay almost ever, but actually playing in the switched gravity feels awkward and just not fun. Moreover it forces you to contend with every issue with Sonic's gameplay. The impreciseness of the Homing Attack, the control bloat with multiple actions being placed on the same button, and the fact that in any situation that isn't basic flat ground, it is not unlikely that when you try to jump, Sonic will do a jump dash instead of just jumping. Normally that only happens on Grind Rails, which is annoying but it happens everywhere in the reversed gravity segments which, killed my A Rank runs, so, many times. On paper it might be a well designed level but for me, especially trying to A Rank it, it was absolutely atrocious, far more than any level before or after it, even Mad Space was more tolerable than this for me.

My favorite part about this level is the test stage you can get to from it. Essentially, you have to not hit any of the chao boxes in the level and make sure that you don't get any checkpoints after the area in 15:47 (you need to spawn at that checkpoint from there for it to work if it isn't clear). Then you do the skip you mention at 29:02 but instead of jumping into the goal you jump to the same area, hit the death plane then go back on the platform and then jump back off and go into the goal. If successful you will be dropped back to the checkpoint area at 15:47 but with the ranking stuff still appearing. From there, you break the chao box then line up a spindash in the direct area of the chao key from the left in a horizontal way (not sure if its required to do it like that but that's how I do it personally). Then once the ranking stuff is about to disappear the game either automatically releases the spindash or you release the spindash into the chao key right as the level fades away and if done properly, BOOM! right into the test stage. There's other ways of doing this but this method works along the most consoles (although not pc cause it was patched) and its just the coolest way to do it imo.

14:40 Fun fact. That rail (and spring) didn't exist in the dreamcast version. I died so many times at this point because of that damn dual-purpose button for both bounce bracelet and light dash. To point I had to restart the level and do it all again. This is the sole reason why I hated Crazy Gadget.

I could really feel the love and passion from the way you dissected this stage's level design and explained all the cool little details and why you love them, and it does a really good job of highlighting for the modern era just how strong this stage's level design really is. I haven't played SA2 in ages, so thank you for the eye-opener! Stuff like this is honestly what makes game design such a wonderful thing in my book.

I always like levels that have different states that change things significantly, such as gravity. Anything that makes it possible to have rewards for backtracking is fairly cool, but it's better when it is for something stealthy like a gravity swap since it tends to just be that the level geometry happens to be possible to backtrack in rather than it explicitly being "press switch to open the door before you backtrack".

And there are so many secrets in the level. For instance, jumping off a vertical rail at the right time and angle with enough inertia will send you high up in the air, leading to rewards like Ring and 1-Up boxes.

YEEESSS!! Finally someone who shares my passion for this stage! This is my absolute favorite in SA2. It was a pain at first as a kid, but I just HAD to play it because I loved the vibe it gives off and that awesome cutscene at the end. Once you get the hang of it, it's absolutely phenomenal, and you've very well demonstrated everything I love about this stage and more! The only fun trick that I'd like to add is that the little reward at 13:30 can also be retrieved through a light-dash on the ground. Holding B to go straight from the rail, to a light speed dash (untouchable to the Artificial Chaos, but right by his side), and then shooting up to the ceiling is SUCH a satisfying feeling. Granted, sometimes the light speed dash takes out the enemy instead, but that's convenient as well. I WILL admit though, I've gotten killed by ring dash areas a number of times here because I was sporting a magnetic shield. XD Unless you get rid of the shield beforehand or have the uncanny ability to cheat death with good timing, it's an unfortunate, but funny, way to fall into the abyss/acid when it happens. Thank you so much for the video! Now, if you don't mind, there's a stage that I need to boot up...
@LeoYoshi543215 ай бұрын
It's not that I'm bad (because I am), it's because the camera makes me motion sick. That is a fundamental issue with the stage and can not be blamed on me, outside of just saying "well don't get motion sick". I don't even get motion sick easily, Crazy Gadget's camera is just that bad.

@Squishito3 жыл бұрын
This exactly. Compared to other games, especially platformers, Sonic is also super easy and accessible almost all the time too comparably and it's _still_ apparently not enough. The Classic games have this weird stigma too, where people cry about them all the time (people were complaining that Mania was _too hard,_ which is so fucking shocking dude). Even though other platformers at that time were like 1000x harder and way less well designed and way more unfair, yet people just ignore those and only hyper criticize Sonic. People for some weird reason are actually intolerant to Sonic being remotely challenging (they also hate platforming... In a platformer....), which is why there is so many babies whining about SA2 all the time and saying it's a downgrade from SA1. Because SA1 is incredibly easy and doesn't require anything of the player like the ranking system does, which is the whole point of the changes made in SA2... To fix that. It's really weird, I've only really seen this kind of phenomena in the Sonic community. He's not allowed to be remotely difficult, he's not allowed to do platforming, he's not allowed to have other characters, he's not allowed to have story... He's basically not allowed to do anything except run forward in Green Hill. It's always these huge waves of people that aren't even real fans yelling about this too, so irritating. This is exactly why Sonic Team eventually decided to make a game like Sonic Forces. Sonic Forces is essentially _exactly_ the kind of game general audiences have been asking for gameplay wise from Sonic. This is fucking why.

Honestly, all the space levels are a pain except eggman’s. Lost Colony and Cosmic Wall have interesting level mechanics that take advantage of shooter level gameplay. Eternal Engine is ok but being forced to not shoot in a shooting level is redundant. Final Rush is ok but is basically Sonic’s sky rail in space. Final Chase is lack luster due to the gravity drums slowing you down. Meteor Herd has the player constantly moving to avoid meteors that often blindside you, and getting the perfect angle to punch the rocks to break panels is frustrating and Mad Space on top of annoying gravity mechanics, has you collecting three pieces of the master emerald and the hints are reversed.
@mikeax243 жыл бұрын
That's the point, the entire point of Eternal Engine is punishing you for spamming your shots and teaching you the intended play pattern of Tails' gameplay. Everyone goes into the mech gameplay, mashes buttons, and blames the game for whatever happens. You're supposed to be calculated and smart, like the people who built the mech. It's a challenge of skill culminating in everything you've learned and punishing you for treating the game like a toddler.

One of the few times I am disagreeing with the sentiment. I don't like this stage because the gravity-changes are removing me from a neutral perspective and even tho one could argue that it should be a positive for me because I am very sensitive to reverse-perspectives(Even reverse-stonetower temple in Zelda makes me slightly uncomfy sometimes), it actually just serves to mess with my perception and control. At the end during the 3D-tetris blocks, I am more stressed out than Sonic could ever be because I don't want to accidentially fall off and that takes me out of the immersion. Shadow the Hedgehog always changed the camera accordingly in its stage with gravity-changes and while that removes the actual gimmick, I feel a lot more safe and in control there. Sure, this might be a me-problem, but that is what opinions can be on some level. I really wish here was a mod that would adjust the camera to Sonic's perspective, it doesn't even seem like it would break anything because all the cool stuff mentioned in the video depends on clever leveldesign, not the gimmick.

i feel like crazy gadget’s gravity mechanic sort of represents sega’s relationship with experimentation. when they get innovative, they’ll run into rewards such as the adventure games, the rush games, first two riders games, etc. other times they’ll get “soft locked” and run into problems. either way, this video gave me a very different perspective on crazy gadget, awesome video!
