The difference in young people speaking their minds in the 1960's is they were being drafted into a war that they didn't agree to fight or want to fight and the young people's generation couldn't be silenced due to their huge numbers.

So many memories of that time when I was young then. A lot of parents (mine included) that didn't approve of the songs that Buffalo Springfield, and Cosby, Stills, Nash, & Young sang. Songs that were mostly disapproved of because of political content. But you need to understand that we were involved in an absolute senseless war that thousands of our young men were being killed, and no one seemed to want to bring our guys home. I think that we need their music today just as much as we did then.

@alteredaustin1 It was certainly taken as a protest song at the time. I remember. I was there. But you’re right. If you listen carefully to the lyrics, it’s more like an anti-protest song. Something akin to the Beatles’ You Say You Wanna Revolution. I guess we just weren’t listening carefully to the lyrics.

Thank you for an excellent reaction, Biz. I know that you were not even a thought in your mothers head when the events that inspired this song transpired. I enjoyed hearing your perspective. These were violent and tumultuous times in the late 60's. Although I was a bit too young to participate, I clearly remember seeing the newscasts and listening to the inspiring music of the times. Viet Nam, assassinations of JFK, MLK, RFK, and Malcom X , riots in the streets and on campuses across the country. It felt as though the country was being split asunder. However there was also an attitude of peace and love your brother, and what wonderful music was made during this time. Once again, the world feels as though it's being torn apart, but where is the attitude of love and peace. Hard to find in todays world. "Come on people now, smile on your brother, everybody get together, try to love one another today." Please share this wonderful song , we could all use it. Thank you Another great anthem of those times "Get Together by the Youngbloods

This song is about the 1967 L.A. rallies and "riots" over things like police enforced curfews on the streets of L.A, particularly Sunset Strip, and the actions of the police and city council...Sunset Strip, or The Strip as it was and is referred to, was a hot-bed of rock and folk music, musicians and the culture of the time...It is a protest song against the actions of the police and the City of Los Angeles, who wanted to limit the freedom of those involved in that culture.

Of the four original members two names you may recognize are Stephen Stills who sang this one and Neil Young who went on to have an incredible solo career. This band only lasted two years 1966-68 but then Stills and Young teamed up with David Crosby and Graham Nash to form Crosby Stills Nash & Young in 68. Young left after only the first iconic album they released and went on to a solo career. The other three stayed together for a few years and had some very big records. This song here was huge in 67 and 68, it was one of the big anthem songs of the Vietnam war and civil rights movement's. I didn't have the single or album but was very aware of it on AM radio all the time. Even being only 9 in 67/and 10 in 68 even though I didn't know exactly what the song was all about I still had a rough idea. Back in those days everything was shown on the news and in full graphic detail. Their was no censorship with the reporters during the Vietnam war, you saw it all every evening on the CBS evening news with everybody's favorite news anchor Walter Cronkite. You saw the blood, the wounds, body bags and American flag draped coffins being loaded onto cargo planes, weekly. Same with civil rights protests in the south, forever etched in my mind is Alabama in 65 on the news when riot police were blasting black peaceful protester's with water cannons and fire hoses and turning German Shepard's loose on them and you saw people getting ripped up. That's traumatizing when you're seven years old and remember my mother with tears in her eyes and my father right next to her, now get a load of this him telling her to get a grip on herself. Could you imagine today saying that to your girlfriend or spouse. That's his men were back then, they were children of the depression and WW11 and Korean War vets. They were more raw and tough back then. Vietnam just went on day after day and year after year on the news in graphic detail. Even as a kid you get a little numb to it after a while. I watched that war play out from seven years of age in 65 to being a 14 year old in 72. So yeah, I didn't know but kinda had a pretty good, basic idea at age 9 in 67 what the song was getting at. The sixties was a crazy decade to grow up in, just fascinating to look back on and think about all of the shit that was going on in our nation at the time. Great time to be a kid though. No internet, no cable or streaming just four channel's on your TV. When we were kids we were always outside playing and playing hard. You don't see that today now do we. Peace ❤

No. The event he was writing about was actually a police riot overreaction. It wasn't a riot by protesters or students, it was an overreaction. Stills had spent time in Latin American while growing up and he knew what fascist force looked like, so THAT'S what he was referring to - that and our troops in Vietnam who had no clue why they were there.

Small detail, but I always heard it as, "Nobody is right, if everyone is wronged," rather than "wrong", meaning we have a duty to stand up for each other, or we can't claim the moral high ground. If people around you are being wronged, how right can you be, if you don't intervene?

Hi Biz, yeah this is one of the great songs of the 60s that spoke to what was happening all around us, Vietnam war, race riots, oppression of young people and more. The 60s were also wild like today but its so much worse right now as to the possible outcomes. At least we knew back then that we still had a country. Loved your reaction and I really enjoy watching all of you react to our old music that we loved so much. I think you would have really enjoyed our music, it was incredibly good.

Yeah thats the issue we peaked in the 50's and 60's and then since then its been a rapid decline overall. People make less money, more racism, more violence, more crime, people are less intelligent, the government is taking more advantage of the people for personal and financial gain. Its crazy how much things have fallen apart. The buildup to the civil war started in the 1840's and then happened in the 1860's and then 100 years later after a similar type of buildup ww2 happened and hitler happened its crazy how it seems to be every 100 years we have a major conflict that changes society and then things get better for a while then start to decline again its like a roller coaster of something bad happens things change then get worse again and it cycles again. We are just about due for another major global conflict that changes the world if that holds true.

Stephen Stills was in Hollywood when protesters gathered along Sunset Blvd. Although he was not a participant, he risked being arrested as he watched the protesters and cops clash. This song tells the story of that night. He was shocked and dismayed by the cops behavior. As protests against the Vietnam War protests spread across the country, the Kent State demonstrations ended in violence with several students shot by the Ohio National Guard. Stills and Neil Young joined Graham Nash & David Crosby and produced some of the best songs in the late 60s. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young gave us beautiful harmonies and inspired lyrics.

While it is an anti-war song the inspiration was the Sunset Strip Riots in 1966. Curfews were put in place and shop owners didn't want young people around their businesses at night. Same old song and dance, the young ones are criminals and into trouble say the older generation, so they got the police to enforce curfews. Clashes between young people and the police ensued for awhile. The venues with food, music , and dance sure wanted the young people on the Sunset Strip, so I guess they won in the end and the curmudgeons had to accept it.

YES! Probably my favorite song since I was a kid. Many associates this with Viet Nam but it's actually referencing to the LA riots in Watts in the late 60's. Several members went on to be legends either with other groups or solo, or both, especially David Crosby and Neil Young as many others probably already mentioned.

Great Song: They eventually became Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. Another song called Ohio was about the terrible massacre at an Ohio university.

I still love this song and, like the Beatles "Revolution" or Hank Williams Jr. "A Country Boy Can Survive", it's still as relevant now as it was when released.

This song enjoyed a pretty substantial revival when Public Enemy sampled it extensively for the title track for the movie soundtrack for He Got Game with Denzel Washington and Ray Allen. They even got Stephen Stills to play the signature guitar riff from the original song.

This song was not written as a protest song rather was adopted by protesters and the media. Stills wrote about what he saw at a "funeral" for a popular bar in north Hollywood. Too many people showed up and cars were parked all over the place where they weren't supposed to be. Cops had to come to clear out the illegal parking and chaos unsued. Stills wrote the song on the spot according to an interview.....great song though. I learned it as soon as I could get my hands on a record.....

If you want to hear what a great band 'Springfield was, please listen to " Bluebird".. There are two versions a short one and a long 9+ minute one. I recommend the short one for a delicious taste of the longer one.

This song is about the Sunset strip curfew riots, not the Vietnam War. The protests began when the city and police began enforcing a curfew because of the large crowds of young people who gathered on Sunset Blvd To see the bands playing in the many night clubs on the strip.

If you see this album check the song titles. The first pressing did not contain FOR WHAT ITS WORTH. It had not been written yet. Instead there wad a song called BABY DONT SCOLD ME. The album was not selling well. When nthe song became a hit it was added to the album and SCOLD was removed. Those first pressings are valuable depending on condition.
