"OGT" means "OG TOOL Fan". This song is basically a Maynard diss track where he is dissing a supposed TOOL fan who was complaining to Maynard that they sold out to the record company and changed their sound. This is still one of my favorite diss tracks of any genre. Next to NAS' song Ether where he was dissing JAY-Z. lol

This is something every Hard Rock/ Metal bands has to deal with. Some of the people who supported you at the beginning become so attached to the idea they are among the few who know this great band that the minute the great band they supposedly love starts getting to much attention they turn on them. Sure the band might have changed a bit over time as all bands do. It doesn't mean they made those changes to be more popular it just means their talent and tastes evolved. Music is an art form and you wouldn't expect a painter to keep drawing the same picture over and over so why do people expect musical acts to stay in a very narrow style of song type?

As a devoted and deep-diving Tool fan, I can't believe it took a comment on a KZbin video to clue me into the connection between T&L and their record label issues in the 90s. That will genuinely add more enjoyment to the song for me. It's always felt so out of place on Lateralus to me, an interruption. This context changes that for me. Kudos.
@rhisilver9693 жыл бұрын
@@mikefraser3667 My T&L awakening also came from a YT comment around when FI released. It pointed out how they slowed the middle down to make it long enough to deter radio play as a fuck you to the label who wanted a heavier single

@@mikefraser3667 IIRC the song relates more to Lateralus itself, and the record label wanting a song which was more like what they'd done in the past that they could play on the radio, hence "is this what you wanted? Is this what you had in mind? 'Cause this so what you're getting"

The drummer actually spent some time in africa(Dont know which country/Countries) with drummers there who played entirely different time signatures and odd rhytms so the tribal drumming comment is kind of accurate, i dont know if tribal drumming is the actual word for that style but it feel primal,tribal and powerful. :) hes specifically mentioned that as a major turning point in his drumming, learning from those people how to do what they did in their style and mixing that into his style.. hes also just a very very good drummer in general. Tool Live Drum cam is a great way to experience his drumming from his Point of view and see his techniques and how he weaves and builds sound and crescendos and makes you wonder how someon can put so much effort and physical effort into just one song and still last an entire concert.

One of my favs. Found this after recommending in another reaction you did. Maynard (Tool singer) is acutely aware of the hypocrisy of entertainment as an industry and the finger pointing we do at each other. The people calling others to action often have their own obvious hypocrisies. It's a more complex song than it sounds as a commentary on who we are as a culture and how we feel free to comment on the actions and intent of others without recognizing our own part in the puzzle.

The point I take from the song is we are all sells outs or hookers so to speak. What matters is what you sell and what you get in return. Maynard sells his voice and talent, in return he gets money and fame. The guy in the song sells his image, the guy is a billboard for main brands, in return he gets some illusion of popularity. It does not matter what you sell, your voice, your labor, your talent, even your body. What matters is are you receiving some thing of equal or greater value to what you sell?
