Anyone who wants to make their own jigs for the soft plastics, here’s a video I filmed last year to show you how I do it! kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2KsZ4djj62Brq8si=qUBD9n_PLDciX4ll

That's a properly a good looking time of the year for the Derwent reservoir - great stuff. I've been riding around the reservoir 2-3 times a week lately so if I see you out there I will shake your (fishy) hand. I appreciate that you returned the fish and looked after them.

Loved the video mate, iam sure you helped me and my lass out a week or so ago, you gave us advice at derwent and showed us where to fish and get tickets…no idea you had a channel too, great watch

Great video. Finally gave up and ordered a St Croix trout rod after meeting you at the Big One - hopefully coming tomorrow. Great to see trout venues opening up to lure fishing. So much easier to get kids into fishing that way too.

If it's Pike fishing in the Derwent reservoir (Northumberland / County Durham border then you're welcome - this water had a boring range of fish from the 70's until the early 2000's....

That looked good fun mate. I'm still enjoying my Area Trout Fishing. Great fun on ultra light tackle. Not using soft plastics as much but using spoons down to 0.4g to 0.5g.

Yeah it’s great fun ain’t it mate. When everything goes quiet you can pretty much always rely on a tug from a trout. 😂 🎣

Cracking session, lures for trout on a reservoir is new to me I used to fish them when they were fly only. I’ve had a couple of trips now with lures and love it😎

Good stuff! I still like to pick up the fly rod occasionally but lure fishing is probably my true passion! 🤙🏻🎣

Thanks bud. Yes they do! Ask in the shop for the Berkley Naiad soft baits (they’ll be on the shelf near the Powebait etc).

Looks such fun I wish more trout fisheries would allow lures most trout fishing in midlands has changed to carp pools Top video 👍🏼

Yeah I think in reality a lot of fly only trout fisheries are gonna have to start making a move over soon if they want to survive indefinitely. And I think fishing like I have in this video is a good middle point as it makes sure the fish are returned in top condition. 🤙🏻🎣

Hiya mate. I'm off there this weekend. Never fished the place before but looks a cracking days sport. I know you mentioned to ask the rangers about likely spots, and i will. But could you possibly point me in the right direction after this most recent visit? Any help will be appreciated. Looking forward to the next video on this reservoir.

Last few days there’s been a lot of fish caught between the south side of the dam and Pow Hill. But it will change daily. So either call up the afternoon before you come or ask in the shop in the morning. 🤙🏻🎣

@TheIllustratedAngler mate I've followed you on insta. Rockhopper I've just set up fishing page. What a job I had. Absolutely over the moon. 4 in total. Right where I always thought they would be up there. Biggest fish literally took the smallest lure. The Jack's were literally swallowing the palm sized ones. Wrong landing net out the works. Been watching your channel and just put it to practice 🤙🏼thank you

Fantastic video. Have you a link for the lures and jig heads you were using ?
@TheIllustratedAnglerАй бұрын
I make the jigheads myself. There should be a link to the video on how to do that at the top of the comments here. The lures in this video are a mixture of Fresh Lures and some of the Berkley Powerbait Pupa lures. We sell the Berkley ones in the shops at our reservoirs (Derwent, Grassholme and Fontburn).
@andycook15224 ай бұрын
What jig and lure combo where you using, I've not tried them before as am just getting back into fishing and looks an interesting addition to my tackle.
@TheIllustratedAngler4 ай бұрын
The jig something I make myself using some fly tying equipment. There is a video on my channel showing exactly how I make them. I’ll link it in a comment at the top. The soft plastic lures in the video are made by a company called FL Lures, and although they are relatively difficult to find in the UK, we will be stocking some very similar things in the tackle shop at Derwent soon.
@deansimmons63423 ай бұрын
We're can I get some of these soft plastic lures from and what hooks did you use with them mate
@TheIllustratedAngler3 ай бұрын
The soft plastics are still a little difficult to find in the UK but Lucky John Trick Worms seem to be the easiest. Ss for the jigheads, have a look at the pinned comment here. It gives a link to a video I made on those jigs.

Nice vid mate Q: Is Howden reservoir part of the Derwent fishery? ie - do I buy a Derwent day ticket for Howden?
@TheIllustratedAngler2 ай бұрын
Howden is nothing to do with us I’m afraid bud. In fact that’s the “other Derwent”. We’re Derwent Reservoir, the one you want is Derwent Water.

Great video can I ask you what lure weight is your rod I recently got a 0.8-5g rod I haven’t used it yet but I wonder is it too light for 3 to 4 pound fish cheers
@TheIllustratedAngler4 ай бұрын
It’s the 1.8-7g St Croix Panfish. And no it’s definitely not too light. You’d be surprised the sort of fish you can land on that sort of gear so long as the rest of your setup is balanced. 🤙🏻🎣
@Hannahgrace3334 ай бұрын
Hi! Thanks for the video! Me and my dad have really struggled at Derwent the last few times, any tips on how to find where the fish are? Thanks in advance!
@TheIllustratedAngler4 ай бұрын
There’s 2 key huge tips I can give you! The first is, talk to the Rangers! They have fingers on the pulse everyday! Call the day before or best bet is to get your ticket in the shop in the morning and ask them there. 2nd tip is, keep mobile!! Trout are usually quite obliging. If I’ve fished an area for 30-40 minutes without a bite or indication of fish, I move. That’s why I prefer to fish and travel very light. 1 rod, a small bag/box and a net. That’s it. I can pick it up and be moving in 10seconds. Hopefully that helps 🤙🏻🎣
@Hannahgrace3334 ай бұрын
@@TheIllustratedAngler amazing thank you so much!! One other question if you don’t mind! We usually use ground bait and powerbait eggs or mice tails how long would you suggest to do the leader between swivel and hook?
@TheIllustratedAngler4 ай бұрын
It’s worth varying and changing it depending on what the trout are feeding on. But currently they are right up in the water. So if fishing in 4ft of water then at least a 2ft rig I would say.
@LolsFishingAdventures4 ай бұрын
Great sport, but fish disappointingly small, Thought there might be the odd bigger one, particularly on lures.All the stock fish that size?
@TheIllustratedAngler4 ай бұрын
I think the fact I’m not taking them out of the net doesn’t do the size of the fish any justice. They were all around 2lb+ and a good few were around 3lb. We stock all different size fish over the season up to quite large sizes.
@LolsFishingAdventures4 ай бұрын
@@TheIllustratedAngleroh right, they looked about 1.5 lbs on video. I know there’s some big boys in there. Very surprised a Pike didn’t show its face using lures.
@ArmandsSprogis4 ай бұрын
awesome video. Just getting into trout fishing. What type/size main line you have? And what size is that hook for grub lure? Is it 10? Thank you.
@TheIllustratedAngler4 ай бұрын
I have 0.2 PE Braid mainline on in this video. Which is around 5lb breaking strain. But honestly anything around 8lb ish will work. And I think it’s a size 8 jig hook in this video. But I use everything from size 6 to 12.
@ArmandsSprogis4 ай бұрын
@@TheIllustratedAngler awesome. Watched your jig making video as well. Could not find those kind of looking worms anywhere. at least not that size and white.

@@TheIllustratedAngler last year I was sold some green japanese braided line and OMG it was soo tangly and none of the experienced fisherman could tie me a lure on it. It would eventually undo the knots. What brand line is common for UK buyer? need to prep better this year.
@TheIllustratedAngler4 ай бұрын
The soft plastics are still sort of difficult to find in the UK. The most consistent I’ve found to be able to buy are the Lucky John Trick Worms and the Quantum Magic Trout soft plastics. If you are anywhere near any of the Northumbrian Water reservoirs or Hanningfield in Essex, we sell them at all of our site. You will also find some independent sellers on some Trout Area fishing related FB pages. Braid wise, it all depends on budget. The Favorite Area braid is very good value for money, but if you want to buy the very best then the Varivas Saltwater Finesse is tough to beat.
@ArmandsSprogis4 ай бұрын
@@TheIllustratedAngler Thank you for the help. Yes you are right, stock here is a bit limited. Actually finding any beginners trout videos for UK is pretty limited. It is all flyfishing, but not much on other ways to catch in still water. Maybe a little beginners series? Ways to catch trout Explaining how to prep rod from shop to the loch How to store lures, what are options Explain set ups and how to tie everything up like Bombarda, drop shot, powerbait, float set ups, spinners rod set ups etc. I find UK really lacks on these kind of videos. Also choices of braids. There is so much to cover. I would rather hear from proper fisberman than from big chain shop guy who barely sits on the bank. Just an idea.

Such a daunting water when you first arrive - the general plot always seems to be that everyone fishes where the other anglers are already located ... which then appears to leave 95% of the water unfished :-) Do you reckon that the stocked fish actually spread far from the point of release, or hang about close to where they enter the water? I know the bigger pike can be very nomadic in there - but they've been in there a long time, not released just a few days ago. Nice to see a lure angler actually casting where fish are (along the marginals) and in amongst the snaggy stuff, rather than just continuously trying to blast lures towards the horizon!
@TheIllustratedAngler4 ай бұрын
I think it’s only daunting until you start considering there’s not much reason for the fish to be out in the deep water. Most of their food source will be within the first 40yds of the bank. And with that in mind all of a sudden it become far less of a challenge to locate them. Early season the fish do tend to hang around where they’re stocked in tight groups. As the season progresses and food becomes a little more abundant they spread out a bit more. 🤙🏻🎣
@PeterNW4 ай бұрын
@TheIllustratedAngler No doubt - its the massive length of the bankside that looks daunting, not the distance across😁 I'm not a fan of fishing the release spots amongst everyone else there, as many seem to do - OK if what you are really after is a limit bag for the pot, but not so much of a challenge otherwise. In such a big water, I suspect that the stockies pretty much stay put, apart from the few that survive to overwinter and get bigger and more wily. Unfortunately, age now affects access, so I can't just randomly wander with a lure rod quite so much. Been aware of the pike in there for many years (even when they were flatly denied - at least publically, as were ALL coarse fish! 😁) - looking like the lure rods may see less use in favour of the pike baits going out 😉
@ThousandYardStare2 ай бұрын
The fish are always well spread out and the Pike have been there for around 20 years so there are a decent range of sizes to catch now. You're welcome. As far as I've seen nobody has caught the 3 parent Pike which went into the reservoir in the early 2000's or the original Perch which must be huge now. I don't legally have knowledge of how all the bait fish got into the reservoir and that definitely wasn't me.......I know nothing.

Catching the fish on anything other than a fly rod is fake and gay? Damn, that's how I think about fishing.
