@@Ianmar1 in Arnis, the rototing strike can be done vertially like he's doing or horizonatally..usually, it's also followed by a flick strike with a backhand or forehand...usually, to return to the opponents hand or face or knee..it also can be done dually to form crossing patterns to create a sinawalli(to weave) with both the left and right hand..this is where both weapons are used as guard and offense alternately..these methods, I think, came about from watching the spanish fence and this was the counter to their style because they had 3 foot rapiers and my people were relegated to 2 foot weapons so our movements became side to side and circling away from their centerline..when the spanish took over, they outlawed the 3 foot kampilan which was the weapon of choice..they needed us to farm so they allowed us 2 foot goloks...Arnis evolved from that.

@@Deathbystrudel you can do either, in Arnis you train for both situations because you train for the weapon hand first for a left handed or right handed fighter..Filipino fighters fight with the weapon hand in front so it's something we're used to..even in boxing..in reality, Manny Pacquia is right handed..he's known to put someone down with a parrying block of his right which he follows with a hook.."Manila Ice"...in general, it's a good rule of thumb to step away from the side someone you know who's using the dominant hand chambered..it reduces the force of his blow by moving away from it and gives you tenth's of a second of reaction time.

A metal baton is a really excellent self-defense tool compared to a knife, stun gun or pepper spray. Knife is too short range, stun gun really is only an intimidation tactic and is also too short range, and pepper spray can incapacitate you as well as the person trying to attack you. Everyone knows how to swing around a stick, so...

Honest question, would it still count as self defense? I just thought that the baton is closer to being lethal force than a pepper spray or stun gun. Legally speaking, which one would less likely put me in prison for using them in self defense? I don't know much about the topic.
@gunfumaster1024
@gunfumaster1024 Жыл бұрын
@@kalamantea Short answer: it depends lol Long answer: It depends. There's a big debate going on about what gun caliber looks the best in court for a self defense situation. Some people say that you shouldn't carry a caliber larger than 9mm, saying that "it looks bad in court." Another rabbit hole I went down is the debate on 5.7x28mm, whether the supposed "armor piercing cop killer bullet" stands up in court in a self defense scenario. Ultimately, it seems to boil down to what the specific situation is. Regardless of your opinion on the recent Rittenhouse case, the reason he got off is due to the fact that he only shot those who attacked him. Of course, the prosecution was citing that he was using an AR-15 rifle, crossed state lines, was underage, etc. Which, those would be good arguments for a conviction that isn't first-degree premeditated homicide or any other homicide/manslaughter charge. However, in that moment that he was discharging the weapon, it didn't matter that he was using a weapon comparable to a standard issue service weapon, it mattered that in the video, he only shot at those who attacked him directly. If someone jumps you in an alleyway with the intent of taking your wallet/purse or causing bodily harm and you happen to have a baton, they're going to be confident that they can physically overpower you by 2 means. The first is if they're physically larger than you, and the second is if they're on drugs. In either of those cases, if you call the police and they take a report, you're almost guaranteed in the clear as far as the court goes (and this is assuming you're in the US as well, I don't know what the justice system is like in other countries). My guess is that in the US, if you can shoot someone trying to cause bodily harm to you, you should be able to use a baton. I have a lot of female friends who want to protect themselves but don't want to actually own a firearm, and understandably so. No reasonable person wants to kill someone even in self-defense. I always discourage knives, pepper spray, stun guns or those cheap keychain metal spikes. They are too close range, and they're going to be too little too late when a guy has a grip on you. However, a heavy metal rod, even if swung by a small child will make any grown adult hesitate. The other option is essentially a small paintball gun that fires either solid rubber balls or paintballs filled with pepper spray. From what I've heard, they're very painful, but you typically only get 6-7 shots with them, and there's a lot of druggies in large US cities that wouldn't feel a thing if you hit them with hard rubber balls. But what can I say, I'm a fatass red blooded american sitting behind a computer screen lol

A metal baton is better than a knife in a single aspect: optics. A successful knife strike will always draw blood as opposed to a baton. To an unknowing bystander you can actually look like the aggressor if you defend with a knife. For actual defense a knife is easier and better to use. Doesn't require special training for targeting, trajectories or grappling. You just have to make it through the initial stick strike and get to close range.

I pretty much could not disagree more. A baton is not better for self-defense than a knife or pepper spray. Pepper spray is the best less lethal option if you want a lethal option go with a knife and I would never recommend an expandable baton. Only under certain circumstances would I even recommend a full size non-expanding baton.

no.. .no it really isn't. 2 kids playing grab ass is what you saw there. the 'stabber' is literally 'offering' his thumb, 'offering' his thumb, 'offering' his thumb' - All stabs were the exact same awkward motion that is hardly ever done in real life - so an UTTERLY POINTLESS test/demonstration. I agree it's absolutely important to practice LIKE that - but then you have to do it properly, like real ppl would attack. Anyone with real deadly intent or skill is stabbing multiple times, repeating VERY quickly, like a piston and coming at all different angles and cominging slashing and stabbing motions - Not just one or the other.

Use the billiard ball technique, fight with the guy while using him as a shield, his friend cannot hit you past him. If his friend moves around him, you move around him, make sure there's always one guy between you and the other opponent. That way you can fight them one-on-one. When the other guy gets too close, push the guy in front of you to him and take them both down like dominos.

Excellent video. I think that with knife or baton, the left hand (of a right handed defender) should protect the throat and the left forearm press firmly over the chest in front of the heart. Basically defend your center line with your alive hand while you defend and counterattack with the right hand and weapon. The same applies for defensive handgun shooting with one hand, similar to the old FBI shooting system.

What about when the knife user keeps body forward? I feel that often Martial artists train only knife-leading stance which is good for threat and self-defence but is not what most who really want to stab you do. In the majority of attacks I've seen the knife user basically just tackles the victim and stabs under their lead arm. This is very difficult to deal with, you basically need to catch the charge and force a retreat to keep out of the knife's reach. With baton I imagine the leg strikes are okay for that, but head strikes might be more reliable, no? Hurt the rusher hard enough and daze them? There's not much one can do against an experienced prisoner shanker unless you have a big weapon.

But yes, dealing with knife attacker is always very dangerous and you still have a big chance to get hurt in the process. Also your attacker usually not stupid to let their position to be easy to get hit. But as least with baton it could give your attacker a discouragement to not charge at you. But the thing is knife attacker Also usually really sneaky and only show who they are and their knife when it's too late for you to draw your weapon. So it's back to person to always learn and focusing their awareness and don't bring too much attention, if they and up walking in suspicious place, and better don't go into risky place if There's still another way.

I always have a collapsible baton (longer riot size with glass breaker on the pommel) accessible while driving. EDC a Glock 19x and a Shivworks Clinch Pick or an Emerson folder with the wave feature and train IPSC for proficiency. Carry smaller batons in states where I'm unable to attain CCW license. Also believe a short sword like a Zombie Tools Sharkalope (17" blade) would be pretty difficult for a criminal to deal with armed with anything other than a firearm. Assuming a criminal might be wearing Level III soft body armor, you will quickly find an opening through the armpits, neck or abdomen. There is some truth to those below who say that swinging a stick/baton is easier for the unprepared combatant vs indexing a blade, but in practice, anyone in the way of a 1.5lb blade swung at full force is going to be in significant peril. Highly doubtful that someone committing armed robbery or burglary would be mentally prepared to continue the fight missing a hand/arm or leg (if attacking the leading knee). The only major drawback to the short sword is concealability, as others have said. I like a cheap gladius-style sword like the one made by United Cutlery to leave in the car and not worry about theft/rust etc, whereas I carry the Sharkalope on walks with the dog where we might encounter coyotes, feral pigs, trespassers or rabid raccoons but there are local ordinances against discharge of firearms.

Batons of any type will send you straight to jail here. But a folding steel walking stick is ok👍 the handle actually speeds up the spin. T shape handle can be held in the first or used like a hammer 🔨. The curved type can strike, be blocked but rapidly reverse the spin into a overhead strike. @YourManifoldWorld
@YourManifoldWorld 8 ай бұрын
@@kevinfogle7929 collapsible baton is very easy concealed. It can match against your short sword or machete once deployed. You can use both your hands for other duties until you need it. Short sword just gets in the way regardless of where you put it, back or hip. Imagine chopping wood (zombie survival scenario) with a sword. Sure you can put it against a tree and work but a weapon that's not on you is a weapon you don't have. In addition, it doesn't panic the weak minds of the general population. In fact, people might think it's just a flashlight until it isn't a flashlight anymore. Imagine trying to talk to the panicky minded civilians with your machete in one hand, that will go well. Maybe you need a post apocalyptic trade to go well, trying to carry a sword to a barter trade deal, that will go very well too. For all operations, collapsible baton is just superior. It's not only fighting that counts. Many factors come into why I say collapsible is better. Short Sword, halberd, katana, baseball bats, whatever it is, are all overt displays of violent intentions. You never want to show your intent in any volatile environment. Stay neutral and be flexible. Concealed baton does all that.

I've been poked in the face, neck and head on different occasions and have been lucky to survive. The one time I disarmed a knife was with omote gyaku and I very luck to not get cut. Also - slashes to the hand and arm can really screw you up, arteries and ligaments will get cut, you will lose use of your hand in a process of attrition.

Looks ok but wouldn't striking the head a better option ? Here the threat is the knife, holded in the lead hand of an opponent who's like 1m away. - Getting the knife out of the hand is good but requieres precision and timing under a stressfull situation. And depeding of the opponent's grip, it could become useless once wrestling (which is not rare in place where you couldn't have run away). Also, it won't be significant regarding the sheer will of murder of the aggressor, he's not likely to reconsider his choices. - Striking at the head is easier and will force to create some distance (which you want because you will avoid the knife strikes but also have him at range of the baton) or deal massive damage, letting your opponent KO, dazed or in pain. And if you have to start wrestling it will be easier to knock him off with elbows, headbutts or knee strikes. Besides that : great video, especially for the "turning towards the unarmed hand" strategy part and the "cuts are not worrying" comment which are really true and important.

Usually you want to serve the head strike as a follow-up attack as it's further away requiring you to get closer in to knife range to strike. As for the arm, you don't have to always strike the wrist or knife (especially with a metal baton) because these things are so painful when striking the arm, even if they don't drop the knife there's an instinct to pull the arm away. Once that's done, THEN you strike the head.

@@Deathbystrudel I get your point but is that true with people who are actively trying to end your life ? It's obviously working with training partner who cares about their health, but i think you have to threaten your opponent life to get that kind of reaction in real life. Kinda like switching hands doesn't happen in "the streets" yet it happens in training. Will you release your grip on a deadly weapon in a live or die situation ? Here it is : Will someone who wants you dead retract his arm ? Also you're scenario kinda assume that you will be able to execute 2 techniques and your opponent none in the same amount of time. :/ I'm really not convinced

The baton isn't very long. If you let him get close enough that you can hit his head, you're in danger of getting stabbed. Taking out his hand keeps him at safe distance, and in my experience (HEMA) taking a swing at an extended hand isn't any more difficult (often easier) than going for the head. That said, if he's ALREADY close enough to stab you, then I agree the head is a better target.
@Ilyas-ty6cy

@@ahuman6277 Yeah, hitting on some one torso and head usually really risky when the hand is free. But usually knife attacker would not put their weapon in front of Their body, same with anyone with machete. At the same time their other hand that free often used for grabbing you when charge. So it's back to who hit faster, and if they get too close, aiming their body or head would be the options left. But as long if the attacker not yet grab you and make sure they don't, you still have a chance to get away after you hit and always go for follow up after the first hit if there's a chance. Because only one hit it's often not enough.

I would go to one of: Zen Nihon Budogu Tozando NineCircles You can find bokuto for cheaper, but if the grain of the wood goes against the curvature of the sword it is likely to break with regular use, thus is only good as a display piece.

i don't know who is the first person to bring up the legend of impenetrables winter clothes, but please, it must stop being a thing. Please do this experiment : take a couch pillow, he must be around a palm wide, more or less. Stab him. You'll see it's completely possible to go trough winter clothes. Very dangerous urban legend.

modern winter clothes made of high end materials, like pertex, filled with down or synthetic equivalents, are super effective at keeping you warm and dry, but a knife goes through them like through fog. old school winter clothes like the ones we wore in eastern europe when I was a kid are (were..) very different, tough. they were really hard to penetrate, and almost impossible to cut through. however ..not that effective at keeping you warm :D

All great advice. Like usual. Though not all batons are good for self defense or even worthy of being sold. Like yours there it needs to be heavy or have a weighted tip. I got one once and it was so light I doubt it would stop an angry man or tough woman. I have two others and they're much heavier and would for sure break hands and orbital bones easily. People need to not be cheap and not buy those cheap 30 USD ones if they really need it for self defense. But I say get a pistol if you have the ability to. That's what the bad guys have typically.

Well, the thing is, many tool civilian can access for self-defence usually still require proper training and required trick or some combat mindset. But if you dont want a tool that only can be used for engage fight, its basically back to taser gun (check your country law this allowed or not) and pepper spray, LED flashlight with high lumen could also work for surpise move to blind the attacker for giving you a little time so you can fight back or run. Still not really safe but that the best you can get if you not life in burger freedom land.

I guess sparring rules that allow grappling to be more prominent in your self defence training is a good idea. But to say severed tendons, muscle, or potentially artery on your forearm are meaningless is pretty senseless XD And is that a movie scene that he uses as a reference for realistic context?

when I came to Korea I watched movie 살파랑? I dunno what's the name of the movie in English anyway there is epic fight scene police baton VS knife assassin. Main character was keep moving otherwise he knew he might get stabbed anyway the main dude did not swing instead he reached his arm to stab Knife dude's arm pit and he was in pain. BTW I watched CCTV footage near South Korean school and there was fight. riot police with long heavy baton and shield kept swinging long baton to arrest crazy person with knife. But suddenly that criminal approached to the riot police officer and stated face. Knife is very dangerous. You need something that knock out lunatics with knife such as super taser gun or hammer. I think hammer is way more efficient than police baton when engaging criminals with knife

That might be how many people hold knives in a knife fight, but if you come up against someone that knows what they're doing, or are trained you are holding it backwards. Hold it point down, blade out. Also, while y'all are moving within the bounds of being light-footed, an actual fighter will come heaver, and close space. I wouldn't be dancing with you. My goal in a situation like this would be to close the gap, and use my knife hand between us--half slice, puncture. While you're going for my legs, or hands, I'm on you, and none of those strikes would have done a thing.

@@krystofcisar469 That's odd. How many knife fights have you been in? I've been in several. I hold the knife to protect the tendons in my arm. I use my other for distractions, strikes, and blocks.

Don't just whack them the once, you want to strike them in the face / carotid and hand / shoulder in one movement in a self defence application against a blade. Think tai chi sword, get the center of mass onto the blade then whip round it and strike them in the head while parrying with the shaft - then you strike the hand on the way out and break their wrist while smashing the knife out of the palm. Knives are no joke, and you should seek to rattle their cage very hard. Look at escrima as well - the parry of the blade is transferred to a hold of the limb wi5u the loose hand as the disarming strike is applied inside the guard with the quarter staff and a whipping motion, rotating the weapon to strike once inside their guard.

In western Europe, majority of thugs and robbers are cowards who only attack people they believe to be helpless and too scared to defend themselves. In most cases, if you show willingness AND ability to fight back, European thugs give up. If you have a batton, don't go for small, easily missed targets like the hand or for cumbersome to aim for targets like the back of the knee. Swing for the neck, face or head. Most likely, the thug will be able to dodge it, but they will no longer see the victim as a scared, defenseless target and run away: threat neutralised. If you do hit, the thug is down and stays down: threat neutralised. Of course, there are exceptions, there are some thugs that keep attacking even if you prove skill and willingness to defend yourself, but they are rare and will keep attacking even if you don't defend yourself. Better to at least try to protect yourself than being a passive victim.
