A great portrayal of such in an inspirational persona, Chogyam's trust in the inherent goodness of the self is vividly shown in this documentary. It's a story to have and see over and over again.

Having spent hundreds of hours with him, in his house and in seminars and retreats I never saw him out of control of his mind and in fact always was kind and decent and considerate. My only complaint is I wish we didn't have to meditate and study so much, but in hind sight I guess it was worth it. I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat! No hesitation!

People here are criticising his personal conduct since he doesn't seem to have abided by conventional moral rules, including those of Buddhism. But it seems from his writings that he saw compassion as the foundational energy in life: that as long as you act in accordance with this energy, free from the self-deceptions of ego, and guided by prajna (knowledge/precision), then you don't need to follow prescriptive moral rules. So maybe the superficial retelling and interpretation of some of his "embarrassing" or problematic life events is misleading - without knowing the full context, and his psychological state, we can't really judge him (or anyone else, for that matter). If you think differently or have anything to add then I'd be interested to hear your take given you met him personally.

Forasmuch as I like Trungpa Rinpoche and admire his writings (I bought Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism years ago) and must question his lifestyle, not as a Tibetan lama but as a Buddhist. The third and fifth Buddhist precepts are summed up here: The third precept, not to indulge in sexual misconduct, includes rape, adultery, sexual promiscuity, paraphilia, and all forms of sexual aberration. This precept teaches one to respect one's own spouse as well as those of others, and encourages the practice of self-restraint, which is of utmost importance in spiritual training. It is also interpreted by some scholars to mean the abstention from misuse of senses and includes, by extension, non-transgression on things that are dear to others, or abstention from intentionally hurting other's feelings. For example, a young boy may practice this particular precept by refraining from intentionally damaging his sister's dolls. If he does, he may be said to have committed a breach of morality. This precept is intended to instill in us a degree of self-restraint and a sense of social propriety, with particular emphasis on sexuality and sexual behavior. The last of the five Buddhist moral precepts enjoins against the use of intoxicants. On the personal level, abstention from intoxicants helps to maintain sobriety and a sense of responsibility. Socially, it helps to prevent accidents, such as car accidents, that can easily take place under the influence of intoxicating drink or drugs. Many crimes in society are committed under the influence of these harmful substances. The negative effects they have on spiritual practice are too obvious to require any explanation. I would personally add smoking within the bounds of this precept. Anybody viewing this video and reading my thoughts, please do not take it personally, I am only echoing the words of the ancient Buddhist teachings which issued from the Buddha himself.

I was at his funeral in Karma Cholling in Vermont. The Buddhists Rinpoches came from Nepal blowing horns. There were multiple rainbows above when his body was put in the stupa for cremation.I am not a Buddhist. I learned from him Shambala and more. He taught on many levels - about being human is to be divine.

To a number of these Tibetan lamas or spiritual guides, just about any sort of behavior we in the West would be quick to condemn is NOT regarded as such but seen as a Tantric path that under the right circumstances would lead to Self realization or Liberation. However, being the Dalai Lama himself wasn’t exactly so enamored of such behavior in the case of Sogyal Rinpoche and possibly others, it’s likely he would also criticize Chogyal as well though I can’t say that for certain.

A great man, deeply misunderstood by the judeo-christian society he was trying to awaken. He showed us that to be completely human with awareness is akin to being divine. That Love, sex,the conscious living of ones desires will lead to a flowering of human consciousness. The way i see it, he showed us that even an addicted and alcoholic person can be an awakened one. How human, how deeply compassionate! The biggest problem with established religions is the idea of a Perfect God, which in turn has created a world where polarities are more and more in violent conflict with each other. I think Chogyam Trungpa's imperfections are what made him perfect. Hard to swallow for the morality spewing world at large.

The sex thing is treated as an intellectual/moral dilemma in these kinds of teachings when in reality it is about energy and nothing more. Mantak Chia does a great job talking about it from the Daoist point of view, although other teachings cover it as well.

It's all raw energy in the form of desire & true beauty for the making. Can you imagine the starring role that ego must have wanted in all that drama for someone with his desire and raw energy? Good stuff! Humility must be hard when you are idolized.

So good that Chogyam Trungpa was a misunderstood, complex, unfathomable, divisive and controversial figure. Had he been the squeaky clean, nice middle-class guru of Amercian fantasy his life and teaching would be clearly fake and utterly useless. Tantra rejects nothing. Samsara and Nirvana are one. Human life is at once terrifying and beautiful. It can't be sanitised no matter how hard we try. I suspect that's the point...

I did mean to give the man the benefit of the doubt, but I don't care enough to sustain any kind of debate. I favor the "professional distance" aproach: if you take someone as a mentor in any field (including the philosophical field), no sleeping with your pupil/mentor. Safer, sounder, less worthless trouble. Unless it IS a genuine relationship, which is rare.
@tribelive90254 жыл бұрын
most people have no idea about relationship is the problem. And they try and project their ideas of what sexuality does or doesnt do within relationship and then the judgement seems to just prove it. Which is all a facade. Sex can be many things and it doesnt need to be damaging, even though society has decided to shame sex, fear it, and shove it into the shadows.

I see your point, but I have to say the whole "doesn't matter if you harm the body" is bullshit. There is no separation between the physical and energetic body; they are both energy, albeit energy "vibrating" at a different intensity. When you are fucking (without awareness or control) or drinking, you are harming your body, but that's not to say it's "wrong" per se. It is what it is. The moral dilemma stems from the false mind.

@asana1973 I don't think Trungpa had any problems with sex. Read his wife's biography, she had a happy life with him and then she had a new boyfriend (M. Levy) who was Trungpa's doctor. She had kids with Trungpa and with Levy, and the THREE of them lived together happily with no problem. If there was a 'demon he didn't master', it would have to be alcohol, because it led him to a premature death.
