For all of the people who can’t afford or are just starting to throw big baits, Savage Gear has some excellent baits for unreal prices. That said, not all of their baits are fantastic. Most bait makers (Glides, swims, cranks, soft plastic, etc) start out as a hobby. It gets addictive fast. Then you give and sell some to friends. You show your work online and people say, "that's great how much". They use bait and show pics of the monsters they are catching on it. More people want to buy your stuff. You work 9-5 at your "real" job, and come home to make baits till midnight. You start falling behind on orders. Pretty tough decision whether to quit your 100K day job and make baits full time. And of course, then it's a job then and not fun any more.

I understand the money but the drop thing is a major issue. If a person works a 9 to 5, they don't have time to sit on a computer a hope to get a swimbait when it drops. Then you have to deal with the person that resales them for 3 times the original price.
@AZ_kayaker2 күн бұрын

As someone who has made my own resin glides, some of these lesser known makers are ripping themselves off. Not only are these resin baits each hand poured, sanded, and painted, they are each swim tested to get the weight and tune right. The time spent tuning 25 lures is time consuming, couldn’t imagine 100s.

I’ve done my own comparisons, back and forth with high end swimbaits & the Temu clones (that actually come in more color schemes & species patterns) using them on bass, snook, pike & tiger muskies, they’ve performed nearly equal, I’ve actually caught more pike on Temu knock offs, however, this is purely anecdotal to my own experience. My point is, there’s no need to get bent out of shape when there are alternatives, and also technology in the home craft industry has come a long way in the amount of tools/devices available to make your own swimbaits. I’m definitely not crying if I can’t get a hinkle trout or a giant soft swimbait I can mold myself in the same color scheme and use higher quality hooks of my own choosing.
@braddistler56974 күн бұрын
So true it took me 30tries to make my bait right. Then another 10 to get situated more production style. Then weighting better and getting weights in molds. Then water temp changes screw it all up again from floating at lake to fast sink in pool. Paint was another experience learning the layers and scale colors lines are the base color of bait so usually black then white right over black. Seems like a waste lol. Been a fun excursion but figuring out first bait took months and hundreds of hrs of r&d. Honestly no other bait works as well as mine besides that new clutch chop bait. That thing works really well and doesn’t bugger up with diff cadences. Turns a bit much so like catches hooks if don’t keep line tight but that’s the only flaw. I make my hinges adjustable so it’ll turn chop or glide in seconds. Anyways great video you’re entertaining to watch.

I'm a custom crappie bait and lure maker in plastic and hand tied I've never seen or heard of anything like what I design and make and years of testing I stopped making anything for customers anymore a few years ago because of the complaints about prices and availability . I just make them for myself now. I even had a plan if the customer would send back baits that had caught many many fish and were rough or torn I would remelt and form the baits at no cost other than shipping my handtied jigs lasted about 200 to 225 crappie before it started to get wear on them and customers could send them in and I would replace for free.
@colbygavigan30704 күн бұрын
Two questions on this... are margins not good enough to hire a helper or two and increase productivity? Do lure makers who no longer have the time to keep up with production, marketing and selling ever sell their business? I'm not one of these people to get upset about missing out on a drop (I've never bought a lure that way) but I would think if the margins were good more lure makers would expand production

I love bass fishing, but I'm a musky angler at heart. Like bass swimbaits, most musky baits are made by one individual in their garage or basement. There are, of course, mass-produced musky baits, and some of them work amazingly well, and they are relativly inexpensive compared to custom-made baits. Custom musky bait makers have the same problems as their bass swimbait counterparts. Limited production ability and flippers charging a fortune can be irritating for the consumer. Baseball was once America's pastime. Now it's outrage and complaining. You don't need to blow $200+ dollars on a bait to catch a musky, nor do you to catch a stud bass, but cool custom baits are cool custom baits for a reason. Cool custom baits take a long time to make, and cool custom baits cost a big chunk of change. Period. Geoff, many notable musky bait makers have stopped selling their product directly to consumers and rely on raffles for distribution. Raffles almost completely eliminate flippers, reduce the amount of complaints from anglers unable to capitalize on a drop, and they make more money for the bait maker. Let's say your bait normally sells for $250. Instead of selling the bait for that, you raffle it off for $20 a chance with a maximum of 25 chances sold, effectively doubling the price of your bait. Do any swimbait makers run these sort of raffles?

People buy crankbait blanks all the time because their hobby is painting lures for their use or sale. A swimbait blank is really no different, just bigger. It would make sense to practice your painting skill on blanks rather than a $300 canvas. I have my share of original baits, but I’ve also played with painting blanks. @ Yes in some instances this maybe the case but It doesn’t take away from the fact that these cheaper mass produced lures can be major fish catchers to the point that I find myself throwing them over the high dollar lures. I think you’re completely ignoring what he literally talked about in this video. Bait makers obviously make and sell their products for business. If they don’t make profit off of it that’s no longer a business and I think people forget about that and immediately get emotional over the price because either you can’t afford it or not used to spending that kind of money on a bait. The time and the investment they spent to develop the prototype before making it a production model, then cost to make the molds, cost of materials, cost to ship, cost for workers if they have to hire people because they are not mass produced in China they are either made in Japan or USA it cost lot more money to make, shipping and etc….. there are many factors that make the price of products.

Watch the video dude. He just explained why your comment is pointless and disrespectful to the craft.
