A spring house was a small structure built over a spring coming from the ground to make a natural refrigerator. The cool water flowing through was cold enough to refrigerate things like glass milk jugs, butter, cheese, buttermilk, etc. My grandparents used one. In the hot summer we loved to visit the spring house because it was so cool. We would pick watermelons from the field and put them in the water in the spring house to chill before eating them. They would also put a glass milk jug in the well bucket and lower it into the well water in the summertime to keep the milk fresh.

This is such an awesome video! Thanks for taking us there with you while the gas is so high priced lol. I love old historic places like this and would've loved to have lived back then other than no creature comforts like we have today lol. That old mill was great and the volunteer fire dept too. My dad was a volunteer while I was growing up. I saw SVFD and said THERE'S A VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPT before you said it lol. Take care and keep cranking out the videos!

Ever have ground bologna?! Not sure if it’s a Michigan thing but all you do is get some good beef bologna (we use Kogels it’s a Michigan company and they make the best hotdogs) but grind the bologna up add claussen pickles or dill pickles and sweet or vidala onions as your grinding the bologna. When all done grinding add mayo or miracle whip. Yummmmmmmmyyyyy!!!!! Make a nice thick sammich or put it n crackers!!!!

a spring house is a "refrigerator", the cool water and thick walls or ground kept it cool enough to keep perishables cool in the summer, and from freezing in the winter

Spring house is referring to the water you were seeing. We have em alot in the Northeast mountains fresh spring water coming out of the ground is found people put a pipe in it to control it then build a little or big box around it.

What a beautiful day to sojourn this landmark. Thank you for taking us along. I enjoyed it. I took notice of the castle-like edifice and see mildew growing. That property may have been a natural river much larger than what we see today. More than likely people built their homes near this river that began drying up. Quite interesting. P.S. Next time you visit that place write on the chalkboard the year you have visited. LOL

“Spring House” The point of the springhouse was to provide a cool space and fresh water. Stone-lined channels or tanks were carefully engineered to take full advantage of running or spring water. These would enable the dairy-women to cool milk and other perishable food items.
