Cre8audio's second little synth is the West Pest. Inspired by West coast synths it has a big fat wave folder and a fabulous Dynamics Controller that gives it a very different feel to the East Beast.

It's a synthesizer workflow or philosophy. Wavefolding has a different feel than Filters. A LPG with a simple envelope feels different from a VCA with a four-stage envelope. Moog and Buchla both have their advantages but also limitations. Sometimes working around those limitations is the most inspiring thing as a sound designer. It's kind of like Fender vs Gretsch, if you just record someone strumming a G chord they sound mostly the same, like a bright jangly clean guitar, but each one having their own quirks inspire people to play differently. The reality is if your playing a simple sequence into any synth it kind of becomes that G chord. It's as you get into the weeds, and start stretching out on the instrument, then you really begin to understand the differences.

@@sungong8052 the problem is that I read a billion times that the philosophy is different... but I hear a billion times the same sounds (that you can make on a east coast)...

Finally received mine. I ordered it the moment I saw it listed. I love my East Beast and use it regularly, sometimes just to set up some fun sounds as a background to doing chores. It took me no time to get to weird places with the West Pest, but knowing how the sequencer and multi worked got me into some exciting jams really quickly. These synths are well made despite the somewhat less conventional designs and plastic cases. You can get caught up in just knob twiddling because there is so much responsiveness for performance. Expertly designed with some of the best sounding oscillators. Really good for anyone just sticking a toe into semi-modular, as patching can get you a lot of value but not so complicated as to intimidate.

I've had this lil' puppy for a couple of months, and have only really started exploring its outer limits over the last month. Routing the 'fold out' into 'FM' sounds AMAZING. One can also get much longer release times by setting the 'multi' option to the longest envelope setting, and then routing that into 'dyn gate'. I've really been enjoying that combo today with slow, randomized sequences.

Excellent demo and review. A very tempting product that brings something different to the synth world at the low end range. Fits perfectly in the space between a Volca Modular and a O-coast. Getting both a East Beast and West Pest seem like a lot of analog fun for $500. All you need is to add some FX.

Wow thank you. A useful review you've got here. I learned things that weren't covered in other West Pest videos I've seen, like that the sustain control affects the harmonic content of the wave. That's so cool- it's like driving the signal into a unique kind of clipping. I am definitely getting one of these to explore and experiment myself. And that 0-scope you've got would be handy fun too! Watching the last bit of this I'm thinking that I need to get the West Pest and the East Beast. I'm already imagining syncing their clocks and having both sequencers running, but with different sequences. Oh yeah gotta do it.

Love the enthusiasm! Getting eight voices this way would be more expensive than better options on the market for this to happen. Still, I'd love to see this operation anyway, as linking eight devices in time is more complicated than timing one device for the same output.

@@burnssuck It's true, though I doubt anyone gets into modular thinking, wow, this will be cost-effective. Something rather strange happened to me with the release of this synth. I was super excited about the East Beast; my GAS was triggered and running high. Then I saw the West Pest videos and thought “this is cool, I also need it” but, then, its sound made me remember that I have, in a box, a 0-Coast and realized it sounds amazing and does everything these do, perhaps more (at least for my creative needs) and my GAS suddenly disappeared. Depends on what you want. Often people are looking to have a range of timbres rather than repeating the same sort of thing. So you could get two Taigas, or four West Pests - if you want. For me I'd be looking for something that offers a different sound, so maybe something digital like the minifreak, or a wavetable synth. On the other hand you can't have enough analogue so maybe get a Dreadbox synth alongside, something with some different character. There really are no rules or perfect combinations.

It uses regular MIDI - there's nothing funny going on - it just doesn't have a USB port. It comes with an adapter that plugs into the 1/8" socket and gives you a regular, everyday, 5-pin DIN MIDI IN port. If you want to use this port with your computer then your computer needs to have a 5-pin DIN MIDI OUT port. Many audio interfaces have MIDI ports built in, as do most keyboards and MIDI controllers. If you do not have one then you'll need to buy a MIDI Interface - these are cheap and plug in via USB and will give you the MIDI ports you need to operate the West Pest and any other synth that uses MIDI. I hope that helps.

I'm new to this although I've always played with synthesis via cheap casio keyboard and zoom guitar effects pedal. I adore Buchla sound and came across the west pest. But now I've seen the 0-Coast. I'm on a budget but I could suck it up and get the 0-Coast. But I'm thinking the West Pest is probably better just to see how I go. I think you'd concur?

Hi Molten I just received the West Pest but I'm having trouble getting the Midi in to work. Could you do a quick walk-through video. I read the manual and reached out to Perfect Circuit to get some input but it's the weekend. I feel like I have a bad unit, I'm not new to synth. My controller works on all of my other synths. BTW: Thanks for putting out videos on KZbin. They are very helpful. I watched you go through your modular journey from day one. Your videos started me down that modular path.... thanks a lot! I'm enjoying my journey in creating music. It's very different than getting a synth that just plays without other gear. Very expensive way to make music. Thanks again and keep making videos

Hey, I’m away at the moment but 90% of midi problems are down to cables. Make sure you have the right type of minijack/midi connector - that’s what trips me up every time.

@@MoltenMusicTech Thanks for replying back. I tried 5 different midi cables. No sound off the west pest. All of the cables are in great working condition. Cables work on my other 10 synths. I reached out the Perfect Circuit to see if they could give me some advice. If midi doesn't work I will return the unit. Hoping that's not the case because I do love the sound off of this unit. Everything else works great. This was a preorder since Father's day. I received it yesterday. If anyone has any suggestions, comment below. Thank You.

You have to embrace the cryptic LED interface. The manual says: MIDI Channel: MIDI channel can be set using [Yellow Edit Mode : Note Button G#]. Press once to check current channel. Press again to advance through channels 1-16 and omni. 4-bit display shows active MIDI channel in 4 bit binary! 4-bit display blinks for omni.

If you understand the 0-Coast then this is perhaps covering much of the same ground. But then you probably have more than one subtractive synth because you appreciate how synths sound different and having more than one source of something is no nad thing.

Has anyone ever built a West style polysynth?
@MoltenMusicTech
@MoltenMusicTech Жыл бұрын
West Coast synthesis doesn't traditionally involve a keyboard and so polyphony is not really a thing. Instead you'd have multiple voices that you could sequence an control in polyphonic ways. Otherwise, FM synths would be one way of looking to that sort of thing - but it's not the same because of the keyboard focus - it's just not what West Coast is about.

Mr. Robin, I watch you often I like seeing what you do. BUT, this time you went on about the LPG on the West Pest. I thought you were setting up the opportunity to use the envelope on the East Beast to control the pest. Dude, you are a modular guy, I'm a little disappointed. But for sure I will keep watching.
@MoltenMusicTech
@MoltenMusicTech 2 жыл бұрын
I think the LPG side is the unique feature of the West Pest and so running the oscillator through the VCA of the East Beast would just turn it into the East Beast - it's the same oscillator. Or, if you mean patching the envelope from the EB into the WP - there's no VCA on the WP you can't use the EB envelope on it... I did use the internal mulit-function envelope on the fold in the video. But you can't account for every scenario and I'm really sorry you were disappointed :(
@mimikova390
@mimikova390 2 жыл бұрын
@@MoltenMusicTech I agree that the LPG defines the character of WC synthesis. Just when you pointed out the gate and its limitations you sounded a bit bummed(that's a medical term). I can also see that turning people away from the pest. I guess the bottom line is I wanted to see you patch the envelope in to show the flexibility of the two together. I did not know you could not patch the envelope as I have never touched one. That seems like a big miss to me if you cannot. If I have been offensive, I meant no harm, I only punch the guys I like, Be well.
