As good as Jack was, Ginger was the heart of Cream. He composed the key parts of the music for Sunshine of Your Love and White Room. He was the best improviser of the three. Jack and Eric are legends but Ginger is probably the best drummer of all time.

Playing like they mean it, full out, pushing the boundaries to where they go even beyond themselves...until they pull it back together. I think it takes a combination of talent, courage and youth to do this. Listening to their reunions, they have even more talent, but professionalism replaces courage, a factor of their "mature" ages. I'm so glad - they got this recorded so next generations can know it's special to be able to "go" like this.

I saw them 7 months before the Farewell concert, on a less inspired night, but even when less than inspired, they were still completely revolutionary for rock. Jack Bruce was the heart of it, and kept them together, but as musicians, they simply matched each others greatness. Hendrix, that same year, was completely mind-blowing live, so skilled it was like he really was from another planet. but Cream was somehow right there with him..

Some fantastic guitar by Mr. Clapton on this "live rendition" of "I'm So Glad". Cream's farewell concert was about as cohesive as this band got. All were great musicians. "Cream" was definitely the first "Super Trio". It's ashame they only lasted for 2 years.

+mud foot I'm so glad you wrote Clapton may be the weakest musician of the trio as that is certainly debatable...I believe they were unique in that they were all equally as intelligent, skilled, and talented/gifted as each other. Clapton always played mediator between the strong egos of Bruce & Baker. In some ways it wasn't actually Baker's ego, rather it was his natural fighting instinct for justice because Bruce & poet Pete Brown were initially reaping all rewards for the song writing. While yes it takes two to tango, I tend to believe it was Bruce who bought much of the tension between him and Baker.

This is a true story. Back in October '68 I saw Cream at The Sam Houston Coliseum in Houston (tickets were $3, $4, $5, and $6). I don't remember what price mine were, but we were just happy to be there. Before the show began we hit the snack bar to load up on crap before taking our seats. While we were waiting our turn, some random dude walked by and said that we could see the band up close if we walked down to a roped off area a little further away. We followed his lead and came to a stairwell where we could see a little way downstairs. After standing there for a couple of minutes, we saw movement coming up the staircase towards us. There were 2 security guys standing close by, but that was it. We walked up to get as close to the ropes as possible, and stood there getting excited. After less than a minute, lo and behold, here they came. First came Jack Bruce, followed by Eric Clapton, followed by Ginger Baker. Jack and Eric just passed us by without so much as a glance in our direction. They all came within 2 feet of us on the way to the stage. Ginger walked by last, and he looked over and actually made eye contact with me (!) and sort of grinned at us as he walked by. They all must of thought "Who are these punk kids standing there staring at us?” as they passed by. We were all in 7th heaven though. Great show that night and this was one of the gems they played. I wish I’d asked Ginger for a drumstick or Eric for a guitar pick when we had the up close and personal moment with them. But I was too stupid and scared to try something like that. Absolutely true story though.

This is my favorite version of this song. It's so heavy and intense at the climax. It's also the last song they played together. Thats what heavy about it. I believe they played one of their best shows at the Albert Hall that night, minus maybe Jack's vocals. But you could tell they were all feelin it.
