Ulysses is the central character from the ancient Greek epic story 'the Odyssey' by Homer. Aphrodite was the Greek goddess of love and beauty. This song references events from 'the Odyssey'.

One of the things that's often overlooked with Cream are the fantastic soulful vocals of Jack Bruce

Odysseus, when sailing home to Greece after the end of the Trojan war, insulted Poseiden, the god of the seas. Poseiden in his wrath made it impossible for Odysseus and his crew to reach home, sending them into constant danger and challenges. The Sirens were something like mermaids, whose sweet singing would lead sailors to their death as the crashed their ships onto the rocks while trying to find the source of the beautiful song.

The Godess Circe warns Ulysses/Odysseus about the two monsters who appear as pretty Sirens (mermaids) with beautiful voices to anyone who hears their song. Circe tells Ulysses to plug his men's ears with wax, so they won't be seduced by the beautiful voices of the monsters. She also tells Ulysses that if he feels that absolutely must listen, then he can tell his men to bind him with ropes to the ship's mast, so that he can hear the song of the Sirens, but he cannot steer the ship into destruction or dive into the sea and drown himself trying to swim to the island. When Ulysses and his men come near the island, he does exactly as he was told to do. But, he cuts and injures himself on the ropes from struggling to break free. He pleads with his men to set him free, so he can approach the beautiful Sirens. His men do not respond, because their ears are plugged with bees wax. To the crewmen, the Sirens look like ugly monsters with big sharp claws. The more Ulysses stuggles and begs to be set free, the faster his men row their ship to escape past the Sirens. This is why this song says that his naked ears were tortured. Ulysses was the only man to ever hear the song of the Sirens and live.

Great song from the 1967 LP Disraeli Gears by Cream. Jack Bruce , vocals ( and bass) Eric Clapton (trying out his new Wah wah) and Ginger Baker cementing the sound with his usual powerful drum fills. Although Cream was short lived it had a great impact on the music of the late 60s

I am convinced it was this song that first inspired George Harrison's to, one year later, write and record While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Released on 'The Beatles' (White Album). Their chord structures are very similar. So Georges invitation to Eric Clapton, to play the guitar solo on his 1968 recording, makes perfect sense. A side note to this story concerns the Gibson SG guitar that Eric Clapton plays, on both recordings. Eric generously gifted it to George shortly after the 'Gently Weeps' session. George then uses the guitar for the January 1969 Let It Be sessions. Not the last 'exchange' these two gentlemen would make :-) I really enjoy your videos. Your format is perfect. Thanks for sharing, RNB

There's the Greek hero myth, but I hear a tropical vacation with a one night stand. It was great, but it's time to return home in the north.

As mentioned, Ulysses is from the "Odyssey" by Homer but in particular, his sailing journey past the "Sirens" who draw sailors in with their voices thus, crashing against the rocks of the island. He directed his crew to plug their ears with wax while tying him to the mast without wax just to hear the song.

I think the movie Savio is talking about is "Splash" , a 1980s movie with Daryl Hannah playing a mermaid.

I think the lyricist was drawing inspiration from the painting The Birth of Venus by Botticelli, i.e. 'she rides a crimson shell'.

A man is thinking he is like Ulysses with his chasing after women (addicted to sex) . The mythic mermaids are thought to be in reality the manatee ( a mammal that lives in rivers) which drunk sailors used to try to make love to. Aphrodite was the most beautiful Goddess. Purple fishes may be amphetamins.
