Thanks for all you do. I like that your videos are in depth and don't just assume that people watching a tech channel are all experts and you can skip many steps and they'll know what to do. You make it so even a novice can follow along.

Thanks Brian, very helpful, I plan to do something like this. Do you attach a keyboard, mouse and monitor permanently or only for setup and configuration of the server? How about a switchable keyboard, mouse and monitor from my existing computer?
@Dennis-ur4zuАй бұрын
thanks! i think this is great for when you wanna do both windows stuff and share files on one pc but if you don't wanna run into random updates and reboots you're better off using a dedicated pc with linux mint or truenas. best regards

Thanx for the video. Can you do one for a Windows PC accessing a share in a spare Linux PC as a server or have you already done this..
@patrickmchargue7122Ай бұрын
How about a simple share that can be shared with users over the internet?
@Britec09Ай бұрын
Sharing outside your network is a little more complicated, I will make a video.

One of these little mini pc's would make a great low power 24/7 torrenting device. All I would have to do is install windows server 2022, nordVpn and Qbittorent. I can then share the downloads folder across my network so I can directly copy the downloaded "linux iso's" onto my emby server.
@peterschmidt9942Ай бұрын
I think this would be more useful if you had of shown how to do this under Linux instead of windows. Mainly because most people will want to use an older PC to do it and Win11 probably won't run on it. Secondly its one area Linux really does have an advantage if you want to run this headless (like most file servers do)
@markaroundbarbadosАй бұрын
Hi and thank you for this video! I would like you to test a mini pc that will work with OBS studio and TikTok Studio Live which are both RAM and CPU hogs.

If I got a 20 TB desktop hard drive and hooked up to it, would that be possible?
@gabrielorr2567Ай бұрын
@An.Individual if I got a desktop, I drive all asado hard drive in a case with a USBC
@peterschmidt9942Ай бұрын
Even simpler would be to connect the 20TB HDD to your router and use it for sharing. Really no software
@koosschutter1675Ай бұрын
Can't you also use a router with a USB port?
@2018-windows-tenАй бұрын
Or a partition on your NVME drive?
@Ogk10Ай бұрын
I understand the simplicity aspect but I won't run a windows machine or vm 24/7 just for file sharing
@laurentitolledo1838Ай бұрын
one can make a file sharing unit using an SBC as small as a NanoPi Neo 512 (just add PSU, drive and drive interface of choice) sharing files via Samba and NFS, with an underlying minimal OS fitting in a 4GB micoSD
@SkywardKingАй бұрын
Why not? Just curious
@Ogk10Ай бұрын
@@SkywardKing Windows is not made to be used like this. It has a lot of background processes running for basically nothing in a use case like this causing extra power consumption not to mention all the shady telemetry Microsoft is doing. This is where a real server os can step in like proxmox with a lot more functionality and better resource management. Or if you really want a single fileshare you could install a bare minimal Linux with filesharing and it would take less than 500mb vs a 60gb windows installation.
@laurentitolledo1838Ай бұрын
used to do this since windows 3.11 (WfW).... when setting up novell netware was too cumbersome for me

GREAT !! That was where I'm lookin for .... Because ... I have WD NAS that isn't recognized by Windows 24H2. So I want to build my own NAS .... Just one question remains: I want 2x 8TB HDD's inside, running in RAID Mirror, foor safety on my files. How to install RAID with this ?? Can you make a video of that ??
@Britec09Ай бұрын
You are welcome!
@Dennis-ur4zuАй бұрын
truenas core/scale supports raid
@peterschmidt9942Ай бұрын
You'll probably find the WD might be using SMB1 and windows by default shut this off. You can re-enable it but the security of SMB1 isn't great. You might be better off just shucking the drive and connecting it with a SATA to USB cable.and power on your router....and backup your data before you do it
