A few days after a heavy rain there was a tire tread clay dirt shallow mud hole. When I walked by it, all of a sudden a beautiful fluttering teeny tiny blue wave swarm was all around me. I stopped and let them settle and sure enough they were drinking from the mud. There was at least 300 of them all getting drinks. Never seen that and found it so cool. It's now dried up but I think I'm going to get some of that clay and use that to attract the butterflies since they enjoyed getting a drink in it.I'll use a clay saucer and water underneath so it absorbs the water thru the saucer to keep the mud wet. Have no idea if it'll work but gonna give a try.

@@glennnile7918 OK, now I think I know which photo you're talking about. Those monarchs are on giant hyssop (Agastache x 'Blue Fortune') and those plants are truly monarch magnets! Hi Susan.... thank you so much for that video.. I am so so happy to see what you and your husband decided to do... I am in California and this spring and summer (2020) I have seen probably only about 6 bees 🐝 altogether!! Is so so sad this is happening to our bees! Such important insect is just disappearing before our eyes!! Thank you for that list of plants for a pollinator garden... I have become kind of a “garden lover” , planting seeds (which I never did before) and it is giving me such a pleasure...living in the city is not a very inviting atmosphere to engage in such a satisfying experience like gardening.. thank you for the list of pollinator flowers.. I started just last week planting seeds like zinnias, cosmos, I believe is gilie globe another seed I planted, but your list really gives me quite a choice of plants... I don’t have much space but will do my best to get a pollinator garden going this year, I know is kind of late to start but on my mind, it is never too late to start this kind of project... thank you again... Blessings....

What time of the year are you planting these?
@SusansInTheGarden3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Rachel. I originally planted everything in mid-May. A lot of the plants are perennials so they will come back year after year. But I also planted a lot of annual flowers, so those seeds can be direct-sown in April or May plus I started some indoors and those went out in mid-May.

Could you have flipped the sod over and topped with additional soil as needed?

Yes, that would have been an option if we'd had more time to allow the sod to decompose.

Thanks Susan, great tips. The information about the butterfly beach was great and I am going to try that one. You made a great point that people don't need a huge pollinator garden, even a small one makes a difference. But once you see the bees and butterflies, it is fun to keep expanding the garden!

At some point, yes, I will. I have planted a few areas of the bed with some seeds so I want to give them a chance to germinate first. Good question, though, because I really don't want it to get super weedy!

Are you worried about the toxin's in the plastic for the butterfly puddle?
@SusansInTheGarden5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Robert. That is an interesting question. I didn't use clay or other ceramics as it will break during the winter months. I'm not sure of the level of toxicity in a small pot saucer. I'll see what I can find out.

Hi Susan, I have been searching different areas to settle for over three years. I thought about northeast WA but someone who has a sister in Spokane told me that WA taxes are very high, they even tax if you take water off your roof. Is that true?
@SusansInTheGarden5 жыл бұрын
Hi, Judy. Washington State doesn't have state income tax... but they make up for it in other areas. That said, we feel the cost of living in Eastern Wash. is reasonable. I haven't heard of taxes for diverting rainwater to, say, a tank to use for watering the landscape and such. You might want to consult with someone more knowledgeable about that.

You dig out topsoil then fill it in with purchased topsoil? Ok.
@SusansInTheGarden3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I get it. The problem was that the existing topsoil was absolutely riddled with quack grass and other invasive grasses, plus we were on a short time schedule. So that is what my husband opted for. If we'd been willing to wait a year or two (which we weren't because we were trying to do our part for pollinators), we could have gone a different route. Some people would have sprayed the area repeatedly with Roundup or some other herbicide before putting in the pollinator plants, but I absolutely refuse to go that route.
