As explained in a challenge exercise in the course, this weapon setup has the advantage of being very easy, and collision detections will work well for simple attack mechanics. Especially if you hide the sword/collision shape after every attack, a bit like in Zelda. You can then use the Area2D node's "body_entered" signal to detect objects the sword hit. If the attack is circular and too fast, and especially if the framerate goes down, you'll miss hits sometimes. For a forward-facing attack like shown in the video it's not an issue but you should be wary of this and make your colliders static (not animate the Area2D node but only the sword sprite visually instead), larger, and toggle collision shapes active per-animation. It's more precise, but also time-consuming and more error-prone as you've got to switch collision shapes on and off manually.

Great video! I'm doing a Legend of Zelda tutorial series and I feel my sword video is going to be pretty similar to yours. Perhaps I'll also point to this!

I really enjoy all your tutorial series. You are a great teacher. How is life in Japan? Settled a bit already?

Bram van Vliet Thanks. All is good here so far. Except for the fact it's still a little complicated to record videos as there's constructions going on next door... Every day from 8 to 17, weekends included. Aside from that it's a peaceful neighborhood, a large city sitting by the mountains, close to nature. It's easy to make friends if you can break the ice. Thanks for asking!

Good to hear that life is going well there... Okay except for the ongoing construction. I really hope the construction will be finished soon, so you are able to record videos again. I always looking forward seeing new episodes of your work. I learned so much from you and applied it on my work. Happy to hear you are enjoying Japan and Nara in particular. Last year I visited Japan and after walking Shikoku I spent some time in Nara too, so much wildlife (deer) in the city. If you have the time and enjoy nature walks, do the hike from Kudoyama to Koyasan. It's great. I hope to come back to Japan soon...

Recording is a little of a pain but it's okay, still finding moments when it's possible. But e.g. I recorded the last tutorial for the course with someone using the kitchen behind. Didn't know you could hike up to mount Koya, thanks! When you come around here don't hesitate to ping me. If we both have time we can share a drink or something.

Oh, I didn't notice that at all... the recording was good enough for me. The hike up to Mount Koya is great if you have the time. When I come to Japan, I definitely will give you a ping so we can meet up and drink a coffee. Keep up the good work and enjoy your stay in amazing Japan
