I love situations like this. "Oh my god this thing from real life would be PERFECT for my art project", and then you just take a whole bunch of pictures to re-use it. I think a lot of the time, we get caught up on having to create everything from scratch, when in fact getting real objects to use as part of our project is actually a great way to add interesting, natural details. I also definitely agree that using a fill layer for your main color/height/etc and then using a mask to paint in the areas you want to be affected is the best way to go about it. Much more customizable and less destructive than relying just on the brush's own settings for the layer.
