In this video, we take a look at creating a dynamic scratch alpha using Substance Designer. We will then use that alpha as a dynamic stroke brush in Substance Painter.

I think it is amazing that you have a channel here on you tube, i am a beginner in substance painter and followed the official tutorials of SP, and i thought how great it would have been if you had a channel on you tube, because you are so clear, and your explanation is so easy to follow, thank you very much for your time and hard work sir.

Even though I live in a non-English speaking country, I didn't have a big problem following this video. I don't know how to speak English, so I always watch the video with a translator in my arms, but it's always a shame that I didn't understand certain parts, but this video isn't. I can feel that I made the video with consideration to make it easier for beginners to follow. Thanks to you, I got to know a little about Substance designer. Thank you. Happy New Year☺

Thank you very much! So glad to hear this video was helpful. Would it help if I included captions for the videos?

@@wes.mcdermott I can't believe how kind you are! I really appreciate you asking first. I'm really moved from the beginning of the new year.☺☺☺

@@wes.mcdermott Sometimes the translator can translate words like 'roughness' strangely into my native language! So, having subtitles would make me really happy. Certainly, I understand that there is a tremendous amount of unseen effort put into your KZbin content creation. Even if you continue to upload lectures without subtitles, I will still watch and be happy to learn from them! So, please do it the way that is comfortable for you!

Fantastic! Was wondering how this worked under the hood for a while. I’d love a tutorial on making filters in designer for use in substance sampler.

Fantastic tutorial as always. Thank you for your work Wes! How do you come up with ideas for the tutorials - is it something you think would be cool to explain or people ask you for specific topic to cover?
@wes.mcdermott Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Great question. In my daily work, I end up finding some workflows that I think would be really cool to show. I also take requests and listen to the community to see what users would like for videos.

i am pretty happy you start the channel sir but i want some tutorial regard painter and designer like in painter how to fix mesh errorMesh tangents will be recomputed for coherency like this and regard designer i want to know the fundamental to advance tutorial please
@wes.mcdermott Жыл бұрын
Thank you much for the requests! Great topics. For fixing mesh tangents do you mean baking from high to low poly and getting artifacts? The best way to handle that is to control the tangents with smoothing and UV splits with padding. I can make a video on this.

Thanks for this amazing tutorial! I'm trying to make a slightly modified version and I have one question regarding the width/height. It seems the width/height values somehow get linked proportionally, since if you crank the width max value up and randomize the seed a few times you can clearly tell that you never get a long and thin line, or a short and fat one. I tried running the seed output through another Value processor and multiplying the value to get another seed number based on the first one, and then feeding this into the shape for use as a unique seed for height, but the problem persists. Any idea on how to get around this? I'm pretty new to SD so maybe I'm missing something obvious..?

Ah yes! I think I see what you are running into. They are linked in that the the Size for X and Y is a single Vector2. It's two parameters but if you want to vary them individually, you will need to separate them. Iin the Size input, you can set a random value for both the X and Y. In this video, I kept is a one single random for both X and Y.

Hey Wes! Do you know any sites or resources we can go to to get help making specific materials (steel based off of a real world reference for example)?

I really like Daniel Thiger's tutorials. He has some really great material breakdowns. www.artstation.com/dete/store
