Just to let people know, a cylinder with the front face inset then removed won't work as an effector. You need to either make the barrel yourself, use a model, or use a torus that has been stretched and warped a little.

Awesome tut, only thing missing is the slide reciprocating. I had to check super slo mo reference footage of pistols firing and it looks like the bullet and smoke/fire leave the barrel before the slide even begins to move back.

A cool idea for a video would be to simulate bullet holes in paper, as if at a range, showing the tearing of the paper around the hole. Another would be in wood since it splinters and breaks apart being fibrous. There are a lot of videos on bullet holes in a brick wall or in metal, which are also very helpful, but paper or wood is rarely covered if at all. Would be interesting to see those done and the workflow behind it. At least a noob like me would find it interesting lol

It didn't work for me, followed the tutorial nearly step by step on a bigger rifle, but the fire kept turning into a mushroom cloud and never actually being affected by the barrel or bullet model. I am using blender 3.2, so maybe that's the issue?

Thanks for the tutorial. Because of some reason the flame crosses my barrel, it seems like they don't work as effectors, also my bullet doesn't flow the flame. What can be wrong?

idk why but this doesn´t work for me, the fire in the first bake doesn´t interact with the gun or the bullet whatsoever and just goes up through the barrel of the gun, i´ve follow the tutorial step by step for like a third time in a row rn and i still can´t find the solution to this, can anybody help me please?

ok turns out that even when i´ve got a regural mesh, like the bullet or the barrel, i still needed to turn on is planar to fix it. Atleast it works now. hope someone may find this helpful aswell

I'm not sure why, but a "Circle" emitter didn't work for me. I had to use a dimensional mesh (cylinder with tiny height worked) [blender 2.90]

Did you enable "is planar" in the emitter settings? It might not work because of that. But it's great that figured out a solution yourself :D

Anyone else's bake taking incredibly long? I'm using a decent setup but, its like I traveled back in time.. Edit: Set cycles to use GPU instead of CPU helped. Also lowered the frame render amount in the bake cache options.

My bullet and body of the gun aren't effecting the fire at all. The bullet goes right through without doing anything and the fire just goes through the body of the gun

Did you set the bullet to a collision object? If so and it still doesn't work try a higher substep value

If it breaks it in your case then maybe just leave it out? Or you could try to play with its parameters to get the correct result. Different scenes need different settings so I cannot really pinpoint what causes the issue for you, sorry.

bruh idk if you're going to see this but holy shit you spend half the video on things that are practically useless and take until the 3 minute mark until you actually make a smoke domain. please, in future videos get to the point faster
