So laying on the medium/paint on the textured side of the rice paper is the key, yes? Then you can paint on the back after it's dried if you wish fir extra pizazz. 😃 Your papers are gorgeous! Thank you. 💐🙏🏽🎄

Each side of the rice paper will give you a slightly different affect. So you can experiment using both sides!

@catrains.artist Thank you. I appreciate your reply. I will have to experiment away - therein lies the fun. On the making your own stencils idea, a rubber stamp artist named Sandra McCall taught me years ago how to do that with the hot glue gun trick at one of her workshops at a local rubber stamp workshop. It was great fun. I'd forgotten about that fun art trick. It opens up such a wide horizon of unique stencils - one's own. I love that. Using a self-healing mat is a great help. I'll have to give that a try. Thanks for jogging my memory.

I've seen a lot of glue gun stencils/masks, but I really loved yours and how you used them, especially that last one you worked on - fabulous! I love the look of the Shibori papers, but they're hard for me - this technique seems to be able to deliver a similar look (again, that last paper), which could be a lot easier for me. Awesome! I'm going to get my glue gun out and give it a whirl!

Hi Catherine, really like your work. I was wondering would it be possible to do a video on glue gun stencils and design. I haven't been having much luck with mine, they all seem to break up when I attempt to lift them and I've tried various surfaces.

i like your philosophy and tutorial. New subscriber. Tip. if you put a second cutting mat on top of the hot glue stencil, you can flatten it on both sides. i like painting an acrylic wash from the back side as it gives solid core when torn for collage.

Bought mine on Amazon in the US. Called the Surebonder, although I've used a very cheap one from the craft store that worked great too for this method.

Good question! More than likely I layered some paint on top of it to finish it off, and then ripped it up for a collage!

I'm thinking you could print or draw a pattern on copy paper and then trace it with the glue gun. After it has cooled, peel it off and then soak it in water to get all of the paper off. Thanks for this. I was trying to figure out how to make stencils for my gel plate.

I buy glue gun like 2.years ago and newer use it. I woch people that make stencils with glue gun but at the end they use iron and backing paper to flatten the structure. But in that proces lines become fat and that whot is bothering me. But still you got one flat side. I think that they wos planina to use on there jelly plate

One side of the glue gun stencil has to be flat, the bottom side.

Love this! Will any cutting mat work without the glue getting stuck? Also is ventilation required when using the glue gun?

Actually all cutting mats are not created equal. Especially those intended for sewing. I would do a test before putting down your designs to make sure the glue easily comes up. I did't find ventilation necessary.

I love all your videos. You always put a different spin on the way I've seen collage papers made! I've seen hot glue stencils made before, but this is the first time I was actually inspired to make them. So, I pull my cutting mat out, pull my newly purchased glue gun out, and begin. My husband walks in and says, "I wouldn't do that". I respond, "Catherine did it". Can you guess my problem now? I can't get it off the matt. I have hand issues so it wasn't that easy for me to construct the stencil. Any ideas how I could get it off? Thanks.

First, thank you for the loving support of my videos. As far as your glue gun stencil not coming off the mat, is there a chance that you are using a sewing cutting mat? They do not act the same as the cutting mat you see me using in the video. If you are using a mat intended for art and the stencil still won't come up, try lifting the stencil as soon as it dries. If that still does not work, you will probably have to heat the glue stencil with a heat gun/hair dryer to get it off. My guess its the kind of cutting board that you attached your glue too. I'm going to add a link to the type of board to see if that might help.

Never even thought about this! In a nutshell, the ink is much thinner, but made of the same basic material.

Question: I tried a glue gun stencil on freezer paper and it didn’t work. Paper came up too. What surface is best? I have an enamel butcher tray, and a paper cutter surface…..should I try? ( I know, silly question. Just try.)

I had the same thing happen with several different surfaces I tried as well. All I know for sure is that the self-healing cutting boards work great for this! Many types of plastic will do the same as what you experienced. Yes, I would say experiment with the surfaces you have on hand to see what works, and then let me know (please)!
