In this week’s episode, we discuss how to create powerful landscape compositions with this easy on-location workflow. I think we're all familiar with many of the top tips and best practices when it comes to creating compelling landscape compositions, things like the use of foreground elements, leading lines, and layers to create depth, but putting these techniques into practice and actually being able to apply them effectively while on-location is a completely different story. When I first got started in landscape photography I consumed as much information as I could on improving my landscape compositions, but I rarely practiced implementing the things I learned while on-location in a real world scenario.
In this video, I want to share with you an easy on-location workflow that drastically improved my landscape photography compositions. Understanding how to effectively apply many of the best compositional techniques is of the utmost importance and perhaps the most difficult aspect of the learning process as simply knowing is only half the battle. I hope the on-location workflow in this video helps you with a highly repeatable and simple on-location workflow that will improve your landscape photography compositions as much as it did mine.
If you enjoyed this video, please consider giving it a thumbs up and let me know what you think in the comments below - I guarantee I'll get back to ya. Thanks for watching everyone! -Mark D.

I feel like composition has been my biggest struggle as a beginning photographer, and it is what I try to focus on the most (along with lighting). On the few trips I've taken so far, it's been a vacation first, photo session second, so I don't always have a lot of time to scout out the best spots. My wife has a better eye for composition, so she's able to help sometimes, but breaking down the thought process of what to look for like you did in this video sounds like it could help find the desired composition a bit quicker. Definitely look forward to trying this approach! It was a lot of info to take in at once, but well explained! Thanks for sharing!

Proper comment from this time. More than any other genre composition is EVERYTHING in landscape. Cropping is probably second..... Good stuff Mark - Landscape is my achilles heel - I was a pro for 35yrs - commercial/fashion - now I have sort of retired I thought 'landscape'. I spent a lifetime 'placing' things in front of my lens. Now all I have to do is 'see' what is already there. How hard can that be? Having tried it l now admire landscapers and wildlife photographers for the same reasons, their incredible understanding, tenacity, patience and ability to get something amazing from the wonderful world around us. No lights, no direction, just beauty. - all attributes I wish I had more of. Respect to you all.

I really enjoyed this type of content, where you take us through your thought process and your search for composition from start to finish. Showing us your starting point ("bad composition") vs the final shot ("good composition") helps a lot understanding what works and what doesn't.

Mark, I really appreciate the time you took to walk us through your process for developing a composition. This in-depth approach of showing us multiple images as you worked the scene has tremendous value and, for me, helps explain the thought processes for shot selection far beyond a finger pointing to a spot on camera or even a brief narrative explaining the intent of a composition (though still helpful when a video can support the context of your POV). Keep up the great work!

Very well presented / explained. I’m a visual learner and this was exactly what I needed to better understand if I was working the location correctly. I get chastised by some fellow photographers that I over analyze the scene and move around too much. (shoot too many images) They see something, like your waterfall, …run up and shoot one or two images and think they have it. Like you, I normally my first impression is not the keeper, but did draw me into the location. THANKS!

Mark - a truly excellent video. For me, composition is the hardest part of landscape photography - especially in " woodlands" as opposed to mountains or at the seashore. I liked the way to walked through your thought process and why you did what you did rather than just showing us the final image and telling us why it worked. I look forward to future videos.

Thanks for another great video! I must admit I wasn't inclined to watch to the end but glad I did as the longer it went on the more it made sense. I have to agree. It's easy to learn the individual parts - but I tend to stick to just a few steps without too much thought about a structured approach. It seems there's many YT presentations on tips or steps - but not much on how to think about workflow. Some folks tend to think: Go with your gut. That may be okay if it's a past-time/ hobby - but when trying to grow beyond that (or just improve) you need to be 'bigger than your gut'. :) I really appreciated this Mark.

Great info. It is important to work an area to get as many different photos ( which can be cropped to change the comp in post0 to get even more photos when you will not have the chance for a return visit. Nice capture as far as the shutter speed with the water. Great vid.

Really enjoyed this video, super informative. I struggle, almost forget, to consciously pause to identify the elements and select a composition. This frequently causes me to try and set the composition in post, usually resulting some heavy cropping. On my next outing I’ll try and exercise some patience and work to select a composition that works without a lot of cropping. Thanks.

very interesting explanation of your thoughts process. I've learned a lot from it. But at the end of the video. You've chosen to have a very strong centered focus point composition. There is nothing wrong with how it was composed but the question I have is why? there is nothing outstanding or "worthy" of focusing in the center of that focus point. The fall, the streams and the trees are all supporting... a piece of small flat rock with leaves on it. The supporting elements, (rock face, trees, streams, water falls ) are ALL so prominent with proportions and intensity and yet what they are supposed to "support" is contrastively so underwhelming. It's like you have a fully decorated room for Christmas with all the holiday ribbons and decorations, glittering gift boxes and yet your Christmas tree is a 3 feet sapling.

I was thinking of why the final version didn't really string a cord for me. But your explanation made it click. That's exactly why I find the image underwhelming. But on the other hand, it is a stunning image, because it is the end result of a thought process. And all the elements of that thought process have been really educative for me. I truly enjoyed the video. Which I think would have never really come into existence without the picture. I frequently find myself looking at Mark's images and realising they aren't necessarily my favourite flavour of ice-cream. But I am not here for slurping ice-cream, I am here to become a better gelato-maker myself and to be able to make my own favourite flavour compositions. Thank you so much, Mark, for sharing lyour tools, your thoughts, your insights with us!

While I support Mark’s approach of refinement of the composition on site (nothing new here) I also agree with you that the supporting elements draw the eye to basically nothing noteworthy. It’s probably one of the main reasons I found the final image a bit weak. But I realize Mark’s intention was more for illustrating his approach.

@@lloyddavies902 exactly what I was intended to say. While Mark's intention was genuine, his videos does has a hidden danger IMO. While his technique was good, from a learners' perspective, it may lead them to believe that for a photograph to be considered "good", as long as you have the technique right, what your photo is trying to convey is secondary. I found this notion very hard to accept. I am not trying to critical of Mark's technique here but when I shoot, I will always ask myself, "what is my subject?" it's usually something that first caught my eyes, a raging water fall, a spot of sunshine thru the leaves, a burning red among the yellow foliage, etc. Once you've found the subject, then you will build around it with your supporting elements. Keep your subject in your focus, all the other supporting elements must exist to serve that purpose, and only for that purpose, nothing else. That is why I usually find waterfall boring to photo, it's usually very prominent, so much so that if your intention is not it, it's going to be hard to use the water fall to support it. And there are just so much ways you can photograph a water falls since most of time, it's huge. For example, in this video, Mark clearly intended to photo the fall colors much more than the water fall itself, but that waterfall will just be the 800lb gorilla in the room, you simply cannot steer your eyes from it no matter how colorful those fall color is. I bet you that for everyone who has first seen this photo, they will say "oh what a nice photo of a water fall", but never "oh a nice photo of fall color WITH waterfall."

I agree with your sentiments expressed here. I note that one of the guiding principals of effective landscape photography is to simplify and isolate your primary object of focus. Mark has a tendency to do the opposite and elaborate with so called supportive elements which runs the real risk of cluttering the image. Kind of like over decorating the Christmas tree so the tree itself is obscured in the claptrap.

Thanks so much - it’s great to hear it was helpful! I always try to draw the viewers attention into the center of my frame regardless if that’s where the main subject of the image is. I find it similar to the importance of edge patrol - I never want anything distracting along the edges of my images as it could draw the viewers attention away from the center and towards the borders of my photo. I think a viewer is getting ready to abandon your photo and look at something else when the image draws their eyes to the edges. So in my mind the longer I can keep the viewer drawn into the image the longer they’ll stay focused on the photo.

Very helpful - how did you read my mind? This was precisely my challenge shooting at Butchart Gardens in Victoria, a couple of days ago. A riot of Fall colours but too much of it. I struggled to find a wow composition and went home telling myself I needed a better planning structure and bingo, you have provided one. Thank you!

Another enjoyable video for anyone who loves the outdoors and wants to improve their photography. I think like some of the others have suggested, there is a more powerful image waiting on your hard drive. Your stated "reason" (what you wanted to direct your viewers eyes to- was the waterfall! For me the only supporting elements were the yellow tree and green moss. The distractions were many- way to many. The tree you liked just does not photograph well with the blah background from the angle your shooting. The big rock left- wow that would have drove me nuts also :) The triangles all point the wrong direction- and if your critical not that interesting. (Got to put them in the distraction column) The hardest distraction has to be the bottom of the waterfall and the cool channel coming towards you. The struggle where to crop and say enough is enough of this waterfall leads me to believe there are two primary shots here. I'm guessing you were battling a grey sky- would have been nice to see what a taller tripod would have done for this waterfall. I'm guessing you could not safely (very important to stress around waterfalls) have moved more camera left- maybe one of those triangles (and more distractions) would have photographed well.

Another great video Mark. For me, it was so inspiring to see all of your attempt images. Most pros don’t ever show that. They show this one amazing edited image and it is really discouraging. You know, I’ll get to a great location and struggle, then think of all these great images I see and just get totally discouraged and heartbroken. Seeing your outtakes gives me hope. I’m hoping I can get my stuff together. I have three months left on Oahu and I’m really hoping I can figure out how to capture at least one image of the mountains here that show up on My computer screen the way it shows in my head. But as of now these mountains are driving me crazy. All my pictures just seem flat and don’t show the mass and dimension of these mountains.

Thanks so much Eric! It’s a numbers game sometimes - if you take enough images, you’re going to get that one killer shot. Gotta get out there and just keep shooting!!
