In this week’s episode, we discuss why your landscape photos are way too busy! Throughout my years of landscape photography I've finally come to the conclusion that identifying what 'too much' is can often be one of the most difficult aspects of photography. So for instance, how do you know when you've added too much saturation or too much contrast to your photo - understanding what 'too much' is can be the hardest part of it all.
And when it comes to landscape photography compositions, one of the more common issues I see has to do with overly busy looking photos, but how do you know when you've added 'too much' into your images. So in an effort to determine how I can better understand when I've added too much into my landscape scenes, I decided to dig into the archives of some of my past photos in search of images that I now feel are way too busy. In this video, I'll share with you the 5 most common signs of busy landscape images I encountered in my own photos and how best to resolve them. I found this to be a very beneficial and interesting exercise to go through in order to try and improve my own landscape compositions and I hope you find it beneficial as well.
So I hope the information in this week's video will help you to better compose your next photo in an effort to create a more balanced and less busy landscape image. Thanks for watching! - Mark D.

The first Moab shot was one I was totally ok with not having a specific subject. For me the photo pulled me into that scene, made me want to stand at that spot and marvel at that view. So it worked for me.

I think that it's alright to have a busy image when your intention was exactly that "to capture everything you're seeing because it's amazing" so that frame will be for memories. I've found that not overthinking compositions gives me the sweet spot between photos you'll never look again to photos you like to watch over and over.

Right? I liked the Delicate Arch photo. Didn't think it was too busy at all. It's a very feature-rich place, so getting some in the foreground, midground, background, really shows that off.

Interesting perspective indeed. I made, and I've been making this "mistake" over and over - and I believe that I'll always do it from time to time. But on the other hand, I think that it also relates to intention. Sometimes, having a busy scene is part of the story you are trying to tell. Great video, again!

Congrats to the winner! I live in the PNW and we have beautiful coastlines and forests. My too much issue is adding too much to my composition. Learning to take slices out of the scenery and determine smaller compositions within have helped me a ton but I still find myself struggling to choose the best composition when on location. I also really like to blow out my skies, so I've started taking multiple exposures to combat that. Thanks for all the hard work you do Mark. You're one of the best!

Right now (UK), like many others, we are in the middle of a 'stay at home' lockdown, so photography has had to take a back seat for a while. This video has been one of the most helpful for me personally, I am always making my images too 'fussy' or lacking in structure (I don't prepare very well before the image). Thanks for the help Mark. Perhaps when we can all get out and about again here, I will be able to put the advice to good use. Best wishes for you and yours and everyone else on your channel too, John.

Just to play advocate of the devil for a second here: "too perfect" photos tend to bore people, including me. If I wanted to see only "perfect" photographs I'd go to a tourist shop and watch postcards. It's the same with music: things have gotten too "clinically perfect" with all the autotune, melodyne, quantizing, click tracks, etc. It's the same with digital artists (there are photographers and digital artists, two different beasts if you ask me) and Photoshop. Don't be afraid to let you be you: there are no "rules", only things to keep in mind, be aware of. This is supposed to be fun, liberating, an expression of artistic freedom. :)

The ‘busy’ factor is something I will continue to work on in my own photographs as I try to train my eyes to see a scene as the camera does in terms of composition. A recent weekend trip to a waterfall provided many photo opportunities, but once I got home and looked at what I shot, some were way too cluttered and had many distracting elements which I would have preferred to have noticed on site. Great video as always, Mark!

When faced with a busy scene I don't try to identify a subject but main elements I want to include. I then zoom in on the one that caught my eye first and then find by zooming out I do an edge patrol in camera. I find this really helps create order out of confusion.

This surgical breakdown was great in my opinion, because what I took from it was, I find myself being guilty of every one of these and unless we push ourselves to be better at capturing something magnificent, all we will ever capture is snapshots! Think "How would a painter capture this?" "What would they paint and What would they leave out", because everything in view isn't relevant!

The two things that I have learned that seem to make my images better are 1) Less is more - be intentional about what is included in the image and what isn't. Your video really speaks to this, so thank you! 2) Put in the effort to include a decent foreground. I have lots of images from the Canadian Rockies where I pulled off the highway, and shot an image of a mountain across a valley and / or lake. I now look at those and go "meh...". I loved everything about being in the moment - blue skies, puffy white clouds, majestic mountains, etc. - but it wasn't good photography as I couldn't tie the scene together. In general, I love the way you provide focused tips to improve our photography, and your ability to explain things clearly and concisely. Thanks!

A great session and you hit on my long standing challenge. BUT, WHAT IS THE ANTIDOTE INNTHE FIELD TO THIS ISSUE.? What should I do differently? Great video again Mark, I`m really loving the easy presentational style that you have. I understand what you're saying on this video, but I get uneasy about dramatically removing a lot of things from the scene, In my case I think its better to try and change the composition where I can. I always think, "do I have the right to change the way God intended it"? Then of course I`m photographing things for me, not looking to sell any prints etc.

Mark hey tks again for another great, direct video. Have to ingrain these steps in to my muscle control. I noted most of your background photos are vertical & framed w/maybe a 3/4" boarder, (nice). May be it's just the space constraints you are working with there but do you also put landscapes in horz., ever us metal floating photos vs frames? I am not printing mine but would like to start via using an outside lab. If you "can" give yr. favorite outside lab much appreciated. - - TKS

To give a different perspective. I like a busy image with a lot in it. It make you want to look at it more than once and every time you'll find something new. Where as a simple image even thought good only gets a look once because there is nothing left to discover

I very much liked the video, and you gave good tips. But I found the title misleading. For me, it all depends on the purpose of the image. Therefore, I often take several shots on my travels. Start with a wide angle to show what's the area looks like. Then use longer lenses to capture characterics and atmosphere. To give an example of purpose. When I got back from a trip to the US Westcoast, I sent my mother a collection. She mainly liked the wide angle ones. The others were nice pictures, but you had to be told where they were taken. I am an ¨amateur¨ in French (serious hobbyist), so both ¨styles¨ are important. From wide to detail.

Thanks, very helpful video. Let me ask you something: For the type of photography you take, is there a minimum quality of camera needed? I have a Sony RX100 VII and know that for some types of photography this isn't enough. Another question - I see so many epic photos from you, where you traveled or made quite some effort to get. Do you just keep your camera in your car and stop on the way to the supermarket and take photos or normal things?

Thank ya Daniel - really appreciate that. I just used the clone and heal brush inside of Lightroom to clean that image up.

It's true. I often upload pictures to my computer then look at them a week or so later and think I can do that, or this to improve it. Sit on it would be good advice. :-)

Hello Mark, do you have a video on how to capture in camera the proper size to enlarge pictures to 8 x 10's or larger? I don't want to crop off the sides of my landscapes. Can I crop a little and then resize the photo to keep close to the original aspect ratio? Or is it better to add a border and print the next size up?

Another good and useful video. Perhaps look at the other side, oversimplifying, that might cause the viewer to quickly pass over the image when viewed in a group of photos.

On the last photo, how did you clone and remove the things in the water to make it smooth? I don't mind cloning but sometimes when I use it is not very smooth or makes noticeable changes

Having something to "catch you eye" in the edges keeps your eyes from being led off the picture. The center isn't interesting enough if the eyes want to wander too much. Having something in the edges/corners will "bump" the eyes back to the center. Keeps you in the picture.

I don’t understand anyone who doesn’t think every photo needs a subject. Viewers get confused if they can’t identify the purpose of the photo, the reason it was taken, the feeling it should evoke, and/or the message. I’ve recently been reintroduced to minimalist photography and it was a head slapper. There is no doubt minimalist images are far more powerful and communicative.

Do you feel that post processing is The most important element for good results in photography today? I’m starting to notice a lot of flat raw photos (and this is often the way the eye sees it) that are processed into an interesting colourful image. I’ve only been doing this for one year-ish and it’s starting to be apparent to me.
