I really was hoping to see how you would act with the transparant object that lays over two different colors. any tips for this, since it is 1 shape but has to be colored into two different flat colors?

The dark shapes with the white transparent overlaid shapes like a half circle - those can be done with flatten transparency in the same way. You can select everything and choose Object > Flatten Transparency. The result is a group - then ungroup. The background will be separate and the motifs that used to be a solid circle with a transparent circle on top will be cut into 3 separate shapes each - one for each color. Flatten transparency cuts the shapes for you. Try it on a copy first! ;-)

thanks for the tutorial - very useful, any advice for flattening blend modes that use gradients?

I’m not sure why you would do that, but let me know - I suppose you could expand the gradient first, but you would have tons of individual shapes, individual colors - not something useful for solid color printing.
