Went from the LG 34WK95-U. Immediately noticed the lower brightness in comparison but have since gotten used to it. I love this monitor. Expensive? Yes. But I don't regret buying it. I do programming and the screen real-estate is perfect! It's also great for watching movies and for flying on MSFS 2020. Only wish the monitor control joystick were on the side instead of the center. I use a Tobii Eye Tracker and it's meant to be placed centered under the monitor. It makes accessing the joystick kind of tricky. I also don't like that HDMI only maxes out at 50hz response but easily goes down to 30hz. I have an M1 14" MBP connected via TB4 and it's great at native res of 5k2k. I also have my Gaming PC connected via DP to an RTX 3090 and it also looks great at 5k2k 72hz. My work laptop is a Lenovo X280 connected via HDMI and that runs at 30hz when I run it at the highest resolution the laptop can support on this monitor which is 3840 x 1620. If I run it at it's HDMI suggested resolution for the Lenovo of 3440 x 1440 then it will run at 50hz which is still kind of slow. The 34wk95-U was 60hz all around. Either way, let's hope LG will somehow fix this via bios update, if it can even be done.

Is the brightness really all that much lower? Maybe I should look at one size down if the screen will be brighter (assuming same other features)

As an ex user of 34WK95. It was one of the worse decision in my life. Bleeding was bad, black level was grey. Hz is low. And the thunderbolt is constantly giving issue on and off. Resolution is good though. Only 4 years down the road and I have multiple lines running across the screen with flickering at the bottom left of the monitor. Never again a LG.

I use a 29" FHD ultrawide monitor that cost $159. This is probably the cheapest and best solution to overcome the one external monitor limitation on the M1/M2 Macs. I will eventually upgrade to a bigger one with QHD but my workflow doesn't require all of the bells and whistles of the one shown here. Good thing too since I don't want to break the bank.

Great review, very concise whilst covering all the important stuff you really need to know. I tried one of these with a Mac Studio but ended up returning it because of the poor scaling and max brightness. As you mentioned in your review, the 5K resolution is very nice, but if you’re using this with a Mac and are expecting “retina-link” experience at all of the supported resolutions, you’re going to be disappointed. That said, it may or may not be an issue for you depending on what you’re used to and what you’re going to use it for. The only other thing I’ve found with this monitor and other LGs is that occasionally they won’t come on when you wake your Mac from sleep. It’s been an issue for as long as I can remember and still hasn’t been fixed with this one when connecting over TB4. If macOS is going to suck at scaling, why won’t Apple produce monitors in a wider range of sizes?

I thought Apple would have introduced fractional screen scaling with the initial advent of Mac Minis given that they are a 'bring your own monitor' device and Apple can never be certain what monitor resolution you are running. (the display screen like alternative resolutions, is just as you say, fuzzy). This is another area where Windows wipes the floor with Mac unfortunately.
@REDnBLACKnRED26 күн бұрын
Apple being Apple, they probably want you to buy the studio display, even if it is insanely expensive compared to the Mac mini, so they are totally fine with making the experience ever so slightly annoying outside the walled garden. It is so typical of them.

@the_irav Жыл бұрын
@@jonicolton I ended up getting a 5K2K 😅.. But it seems that any screen with a PbP capability will do. It's actually not a bad workaround if your device is a bit older and can see two displays of 2560 but can't push a single 5120 signal (HDMI/DP version?) You do have to change the config on macOS on the displays (desktop options) that "displays have separate spaces" -- that way the whole display acts as a single panel and you don't get an invisible seam in the middle that would make your windows jump around.

Please review Alogic Clarity 27" UHD Monitor! It's the next best thing after Apple Studio Display, or the LG Ultrafine 5k display. I can't bear to look at the matte anti-glare coating on basically ALL the monitors on sale in the market. The glossy displays on MacBooks and other Apple displays are amazing to look at with no loss in contrast or sharpness of the image. High brightness levels make reflections a non-issue pretty much. Just buy a Sony 43" TV ( Sony X80J, X80K) It has built-in apps and speakers, a remote control, better color accuracy, better peak brightness, and HDR support in macOS. The pixel density is old school (about 104 PPI), but good enough for just about any task with a large 42.5" display for multiple windows. You need to push back the display from your seated position - yes you will need a deep desk for this, but it works and you get not only a wide monitor but a tall monitor too. Finally, it costs about 1/3 of the ridiculously expensive LG monitor in this video.

even the QD OLED ultra wide monitor is a better deal than this monitor

I bought the Samsung CRG9 odyssey 49- hooked up to a MacBook pro 15 (HDMI) and a MacBook pro M1 (USB-C thunderbolt). want to love the picture-by-picture feature. The problem is: in sleep mode, it takes too long to find the DP 1.4 connection and wake up. over a minute. And when in PBP mode it can't decide which screen (1 or 2) is HDMI or DP 1.4. is this a Samsung issue and a mac issue? I heard Samsung doesn't work well with mac.
