Until Apple gets OLED, no need to upgrade an M1
@andyH_England2 ай бұрын
MiniLED is as good as OLED and better in some regards, mainly because it does not use PWM and has a higher brightness. Also, battery life is better than OLED, which, used with a white background, can lose 20-30% SOT versus IPS. Gaming is better on OLED due to faster response times, but this is a professional machine, not a gaming machine, so that is moot. Apple's own analytics suggest that OLED iPads had no positive effect on sales, and it was reasonable to conclude that OLED is not a driving factor as the diehard OLED fans make it seem.

Would you say a brand new Macbook Pro 16 M1 Pro with 1tb of SSD for 1250 USD is a good deal? Keep in mind that in my country every mac gets taxed quite a bit so it originally cost 3500 so around 1/3 of the original price. It's the equivalent if it was sold for around 890USD in the US. I will mostly use it for music/audio production and my projects never go over 50-60 stems (both VSTS but mostly audio channels). I am upgrading from a base model MacBook Air M1.

@ there is a M2 version with the same exact specs (so 1tb) but its around 2400USD so double (1800USD) compared to the M1 deal. The M1 is the 1/3 of the original price and the M2 is around 2/3. I can defiantly not afford to pay 2400 but I can afford to pay 1200. Plus I’ve seen used base model MacBook Airs M1 go for 850 for just the laptop + charger. When I sell mine it will also include a carry pouch and an expensive dongle. So only spending around 350-400USD for better chip, screen, webcam, RAM and 8x the storage. Seems like a steal to me.

Great video! This is how a video should be! Worth to note is that starting with M2 Pro, you got a much better HDMI port/output. So it that's very very important then skip M1 Pro. As I see it, the more money the time is, at work, then you should pick a as new MBP14 as possible. So if these time savers adds up and will save you a lot of time, then it's worth it. It's honestly not a huge difference between M1 Pro and M4 Pro. Not a game-changer...
@CreatedTech2 ай бұрын
I was hesitant to recommend people upgrade to M4 Pro from M1 Pro or M2 Pro in the video. My original script covered this, and said that IMO only professionals (those who make money from working on their laptop) should seriously consider it. Time is money, and going from an M1 Pro (for example) to M4 Pro is such a huge leap in performance. I ended up cutting that section out to save time and also because I hoped it was pretty obvious for those already looking to upgrade 😂
@cjeelde2 ай бұрын
But that performance boost... depends on... so if you work for hours with the timeline in FCP and then the export takes 7 min with M1 Pro and 4 min with M4 Pro, then it's not worth the upgrade. It really depends on the workload :) I bought MBP14 M1 Pro (not binned) 16/1000 with that more powerful charger ~2 years ago. For the better config (RAM and SSD) plus more ports and a good display. Plus it was on sale. I wanted 32 GB RAM but that is so expensive. I always prefer the Pro products :)

Apple Silicon has marked a significant turning point in the PC market, and over the past four years, M-chip Mac models have consistently outperformed the competition. The MacBook Air is widely regarded as the best ultrabook, even in light of the Snapdragon X Elite. The upcoming release of the M4 chip in the 2025 MacBook Air is expected to maintain this advantage. Unfortunately, despite its success, Apple hasn't captured a larger share of the market primarily due to the legacy support for Windows, which makes users hesitant to switch from it. The M4 Pro-equipped MacBooks and Mac Mini remain the fastest and most efficient computers in their respective categories. Qualcomm lacks a professional-grade chip, putting them out of contention, while Arrow Lake has faced delays, and AMD's supply issues continue to be problematic. For "pro" users who are not overly attached to Windows, choosing an Apple product is a clear decision. Even value for money has changed, with Macs now being priced similarly to rivals. Sadly, even this reality only means Apple is continually in a battle to maintain market share with little hope of breaking the Windows natural monopoly.

The reason Apple is doing so well is because competing Snapdragon X Elite chips have no compatibility with x86 programs while Apple has rosetta to run intel apps.

The fun (and sad) fact is that Apple Silicon has become much more stable choice nowadays. With Snapdragon, you can’t count on consistent software support. If you go with Intel, it’s like a lottery-you might end up with an unstable chip. As for AMD, upgrading RAM comes with a catch: you have to reduce the frequency and bandwidth of the RAM; otherwise, your computer might not boot.

M4 Pro is all you need for video editing. It handles multi-cam 4K timelines easily. HOWEVER, once you start doing very intensive things like lots of effects, 3D animations, or noise removal/object tracking etc (and typically all at the same time), the M4 Max will be better. M4 Max will be overkill for most casual editors. It's really only for professionals.

A reviewer that finally shows the improvement from the models 99% of people would likely consider an upgrade from. I find it odd how many reviewers compare to the M3 which no sane person would upgrade from yet unless they just had piles of cash sitting around. A more realistic upgrade is going to be those with an M1 or still on Intel Macs. I’m also tired that video editing reviews only ever measure export of a mostly straight cuts only video. Something almost entirely handled by the media engine. It’s important to measure the complex processing tasks because that’s the entire reason why one gets a more powerful machine. So many reviewers claim the M4 is identical to the M1 just based on video export times. That’s a completely wrong perspective and not really providing valid information. This review covers both sides very well. Yeah some tasks may not be much faster but others will be.

The goofy part is that a solid 95% of people running the old M1 Pro will not need any upgrade for a few more years to come. The difference in performance is no *there* yet, and if they did just fine with the old one, there ain't a lot of reason to upgrade. That being said, I will be getting a M4 Pro, to switch from my current Thinkpad. It is time for me to upgrade, and I desire that combination of UNIX OS and well-supported media processing tool. I am sick of dualbooting to balance the lack of support on Linux with the utter jank that Windows is. I think the M4 will be useful to me for years to come, and seeing the M1 Pro, heck even the base M1, going so strong now gives me hope that the M4 Pro won't need a change soon.
@digitaldevigner4080Ай бұрын
@ it’s not that the difference in performance isn’t there yet. It’s more that most people don’t need that difference yet. We all feel our M1 Pro is good enough because in many cases it is. It flies through most video tasks with no problems at all. The stuff we do have to wait for is minimal. Apple silicon has way surpassed the computing needs of most users. Not be fair I feel like that’s true of most graphics cards as well. Even a cheap 3060 still handles HD games very well. We have reached a good enough level with a lot of hardware now. Outside of AI not a lot of computing tasks really need more.

Is the 14” going to allow a good workflow for Capture One/Lightroom photo editing or video editing in terms of screen real estate? The 16” has a nice large display but it has a large footprint. What are your thoughts? 2. One thing you missed in the video (or I missed) at 1:09 you showed, but didn’t reveal, *which* display was the nano texture. If I had to wager a guess, I’d say the top sample was nano. It looks slightly less vibrant. I'm more of a Windows + Android supporter. I think the Apple laptops have really blown away the competition in recent years which is why I have a few questions that if you can answer, I'd be very appreciative. I know this comparison didn't involve any windows laptops, but I'm wondering, why do you think Apple beats the competition in practically every benchmark; even comparable to laptops outfitted with the 4090 mobile? Imo, it's really just ARM vs x86, but what are your thoughts? Is it possible comparing the M4 which came out this year isn't exactly a fair comparison to the 4090 + i9 14th gen mobile of a year or two prior? If I prefer to stick to windows, are you familiar enough with the space to recommend me to hold off a few months, maybe even another year for a laptop in order to see some more ARM integration? Besides that, I also love gaming and emulation doesn't really seem like the way to go. For those reasons, would you recommend that I even consider Apple/ARM which doesn't support many games natively? Should I continue to buy x86 or even wait until ARM is fully supported? How long do you figure that would take? Great video! If you are able to answer my questions, I will be very thankful! God bless you :).
@CreatedTech2 ай бұрын
ARM vs x86 is definitely part of it, but Apple also makes their own hardware AND software. So the two work in harmony and are designed to complement each other. Windows ARM integration will improve over the next 1-2 years, but not significantly IMO. Particularly with games, it takes a lot of effort to make a game ARM-native. Hard to predict. Same with Apple gaming - it will take likely a decade to significantly improve. So if you need gaming capability, either stick with Windows, or get a Mac laptop + a budget gaming desktop.
@D0CTS2 ай бұрын
@@CreatedTech I think in my case, Windows does work better. It'll be interesting to see if intel is able to optimize x86 to have better efficiency, or if the architecture really is just cooked. If the latter is true, how long it will take for everything to get migrated to ARM or some other new variation. On a completely separate note, even though your content is mostly Apple focused, would you consider making some videos comparing Framework laptops? I don't have that type of money but maybe you'd be interested in comparing a bunch of modular laptops especially because you can do it relatively cheaply compared to other brands. You could buy the 13 inch model for instance and buy the mainboards (or maybe they'll lend you some for testing) and you could do the comparison using all the same parts, minus the mainboard. Maybe a bit too niche, but I would love to see your style of videos with their products (especially because I own one). P.S. I'm not affiliated, I just really love the idea of PC modularity for a laptop.

You mention MaxTech, but they are notorious for making videos riddled with errors and making 4-5 videos just to answer one question, unlike mine that compares all 4 in just 10 minutes! They also do not use PugetBench (gold standard for anything creative) and waste time on useless benchmarks like Figma or Speedometer. No hate to them, they have their own way of comparing, as do I.

@@CreatedTech I would love to give specific recommendations too if I was well versed with it, and I’m not saying don’t do these benchmarks, all I’m saying is that just don’t limit to the same things that are already covered by many others, I’d love to take away something new that wasn’t already repeated multiple times or known after watching newer videos, perhaps inbuilt game benchmarks which people don’t usually do, it can still reflect the overall performance even if gaming isn’t the intended purpose. Maybe there are other dedicated ray tracing benchmarks out there too.

@@dr.python I get what you're saying. With these videos I also try to walk a fine line between "too many" benchmarks to avoid overwhelming the audience, and not enough. Unfortunately the lack of variety in benchmarks is due to most software just not being optimised for macOS. There are very few games that have dedicated benchmarks that work on Apple silicon for example. PugetBench is only just compatible - Lightroom doesn't even work yet (don't ask me about the nightmare that was creating this same video last year!). I do plan on expanding the benchmark variety as this changes though.

M4 pro extra memory is NOT for free!
@CreatedTech2 ай бұрын
It is though lmao. They were all priced at the $1999 mark when first released, but the M4 comes with additional RAM.

1:22 this is not correct. The maximum of 4 TB for M4 Pro is only on MBP while Mac Mini M4 Pro can have 8 TB SSD. This makes me wonder: why? Why do Apple do this?
@CreatedTechАй бұрын
No, it is correct, because I am only comparing MacBook Pros in this video...
@cjeeldeАй бұрын
But the title of the video is only about the chips, not MBP. It's worth noting about M4 Pro that it actually support 8 TB in Mac Mini. My summary some weeks ago: M1-M4: max 2 TB All Max chips: max 8 TB M1 Pro - M2 Pro: max 8 TB M3 Pro: max 4 TB M4 Pro: max 4/8 TB (MBP/MacMini)
@CreatedTechАй бұрын
@@cjeelde The title is so long already that the word "MacBook" can't be added. Regardless, it's obvious that this video is about the MacBook Pro. They are featured front and centre in the thumbnail, in the first second of the video, and verbally mentioned multiple times. It doesn't even matter because no one in their right mind would pay for an 8TB SSD upgrade anyway.
@cjeeldeАй бұрын
As I said, the title is about the chips. Maybe the title could have been "Ultimate Comparison: MBP M1-M4 Pro"? And yes, all normal clever people will never pick that expensive 8 TB option. I still think it's worth to mention that M4 Pro in Mac Mini actually support 8 TB. That can be done in the description box. But otherwise it's a really good video! I miss Apple's own info about TFLOPs for the GPU. They revealed it for M1 and M2, and we can estimate it for M3. Apple was more detailed before. I noticed that when M3 came out, when comparing Pro and Max, Max got much more "love" from Apple. Now with M4, Pro got much more "love". As I see it, M4 Pro is really really good! Much thanks to N3E and ARMv9! And maximum of 64 GB RAM!
@CreatedTechАй бұрын
@@cjeelde "Ultimate Comparison: MBP M1-M4 Pro" is definitely not a user-friendly title 😆. 95% of people would have no idea what that means. And why would I mention that the Mac Mini goes to 8TB in the description of a MacBook Pro comparison video? No one will see it and again, it's just not relevant to this video. This is for people searching for a LAPTOP. They are not interested in DESKTOP Macs. I get what you're saying but you're picking a really odd hill to die on!

I understand you need to make a buck (and I actually like your posts) but the sleeve promotion had me turn off the rest of the video.

Do you understand how much money this video cost me to produce? First, I had to buy all 4 of these MacBooks (Apple doesn't send them to me and I also don't return them). Then, I have to fund all the camera equipment and lighting etc used to record everything. Next, I need to spend 4-6 days straight benchmarking and comparing and writing the script to make it easier for people to understand AND recording the footage. Then, I need to spend another 2 days editing the final video. So all up about 8 days of full-time work minimum. And I also create chapters for sponsored sections so that you can literally skip the entire section with a tap of a button. It saddens me that you enjoy these videos but also don't want to be inconvenienced by me trying to fund their production.
