I go to a boxing and Muay Thai gym which easily falls into the “rough and tumble” category from the Gym Culture part 1 video. Of the 10 people that show up to practice most consistently, 5 of them are currently competing. Our coach’s entire coaching philosophy can be summed up in two sentences he said to us. “If you’re only coming here for exercise and to learn to fight, push yourself as hard as YOU want to. But if you have any plans of competing under this gym’s name, you push yourself as hard as I want you to”.

Right? I don't even do martial arts and still enjoyed this very much. Dude's intelligent, eloquent, well read and entertaining at the same time. And this video has a much broader useful application than just in MA. I've met, sadly, a few too many managers who would greatly benefit from it.

my 5th Dan instructor in Korea, 1972-3, was beloved in the local village. He'd walk around with a kid handing on each limb and one around his neck. The kids were having fun and so was Moon, but it was also TRAINING! We'd seen him do so many astounding things that we had no problem with coming to attention every time he spoke, and saying "Sir". He made it clear to us that such treatment was only for best training effect, while class was in-session, but all of us just automatically carried it on, wherever we saw him. That's how it is when you can kill people with a flick of your hand. :-)

I'm in the process of starting a non-profit organisation here in the UK that works with at risk youth, through BJJ and mentoring programmes and this has been very informative video that's given me a lot to think about. I've given a lot of thought to proper safeguarding training, start up funding, insurance coverage, doing the youth outreach, running pilot programmes with other organisations and charities that do similar work through other martial arts etc etc. I actually hadn't given a thought to how much the of an influence fostering the right gym culture could have on the young people l'm looking to work with. I've got caught up in thinking, BJJ is good, and in and of itself it will have a positive impact on these young peoples lives, but your right with the wrong culture in the gym I could just as easily take these kids and turn them into little monsters. I'm now going to include how we go about creating the correct gym culture to help foster the goals we have as an organisation into my planning. Genuinely thanks for this video it was really helpful, great work!

Great talk. If I were to add anything, it would be that this kind of institutional culture doesn’t always flow from the top. Sometimes it kind of “lives in the walls” and can be resilient towards any attempt at changing it.

I was working on my own comic universe where this rising fight promotion’s got the major local gyms trying to one up each other and shit. The idea is they’re all trying to be optimized yet they ALL fall into the trap of specialization (examples: the gym that focused on producing winners didn’t take long to become the “EPO Army”, the “chill” dojo near the beach became the casual gym that’s canonically carried by 3 fighters alone, the hood gym that once knew how to properly instill the champion’s mindset got so toxic one of the coaches started a new gym in defiance)

very interesting in my school the earlier levels all warm up together but as you get to higher levels you warm up individually, We call the teacher Shifu, but anyone can approach him and ask questions, he's super chill. I go in there and start stretching because I'm there to work off my anger and become stronger and they encourage that. but also dont force people or punish people if they prefer a more relaxed approach of course if you take a more relaxed approach it takes longer to advance

This was very good and just kept getting better as it went along. I found myself wanting to draw parallels with my own school, with an academic environment, and with the work environment. It’s well-paced and reasoned material. If there are background references, the creator has for this - other than “my epic and brilliant life experience!” - I would truly like to hear about them.

In aikido we bowed while entering/leaving and starting the class, the warmup was done together, but apart from this the culture was warm and people joked around and socialized regardless of levels.

@@ArmchairViolence there are probably some other structural factors at play there other than selection bias; however, you are probably also correct about limited audience scope. Limited audience aside, it was still a good and important video to make. It marries up with a lot of my anecdotal experience, which makes me feel like it is useful for other people to hear earlier in their martial arts coaching experience.

For around 4 yrs I studied under a man who had a very liberal culture, and a small class size. His system was also an amalgamation of different arts and focussed on self defense over combat. I ended up moving and decided to find a completely opposite culture as i felt i needed it at the time. I ended up at a place that valued respect, tradition ans a very strict adhearance to the technique as taught. It was difficult at first, but as time went on and i got comfortable with the rigid nature I ended up doing well with it. Most common punishment was cleaning mats, windows things like that. At the time, I was competing on motorcycles so extra strict nature of that gym really helped with focus on the tract. Now I'm just a middle aged guy with a dad bod who likes martial arts but is very much out of practice 😂😂😂

Sharing my experiences, don't read if you don't care, I tend to write long shit which might not be interesting for you in the end. - boxing gym I joined doesn't really have a culture, there is no sense of belonging in the group classes really, the instructor is slightly joking around but focus is on workout to get as much info in an hour as possible, no time is wasted and all rest time was spent hearing about the next excersise. I liked it, but I very much prefer to go for individual classes (which are more expensive and only 1/week but I feel like I'm benefiting from them more), where me and my coach know one another for about 2 years now and during pad work (yeah yeah I know) we communicate nonverbally and can talk about some shit during the training, which is surprisingly good multitasking excersise for me, since my brain has to process visual commands fast and focus on what we're talking about. So it's efficient but relaxed. - my taekwondo dojang is the old school karate-like style. Strict, no talking allowed (unless the instructor has a good day and we can crack some jokes directly with him without being punished with pushups), insane focus on endurance cardio (jumping on one leg all the time) while all other things are secondary. Good workout but could be more technical, we mostly repeat basics. Which probably isn't bad since roundhouse side and front kicks are the most effective ones anyway. A lot of people show up and quit because it's not as technical as they would like. - my judo dojo is basically a dysfunctional family. Only sparring gets hardcore and it is a part of almost every class (we can round up to every class since sometimes it's "french sparring" where one person is only attacking and the other is only defending), otherwise talking is allowed, atmosphere is super relaxed and it has a general rule "train only as hard as you like". Outside sparring of course. Sensei is a loving grandpa type and everyone has utmost deserved respect for the guy. People still train rather hard since we have a good spread of ranks and everyone is progressing so we have a bit of a race going, with sparring checking who got better. Surprisingly my sparring partner got very ahead of me in a week or two so I gotta step up. - my kyokushin dojo is led by an asshole. Only he can talk and crack jokes, everyone else gotta stay silent or at least be able to be funny in sensei asshole's eyes, then they can get away with it. Training is 90 minutes of extreme. Every excersise we do we're supposed to do to the limit of our body. I only do half classes so dunno how much they spar, with me doing 4 classes a month 1-2 involves kumite. There's no kata, kihon and other techniques take maybe 5 minutes/class tops, we focus on extreme cardio, punching&kicking bags, doing like 400 crunches, shadowboxing with weights or training to defend from kicks and counter kick. These are the 4 that passed my vibe check. I wish tkd and kyokushin were more technical but I can always do kata at home. Now for the bad ones - I was in a shotokan dojo for few years, worst time of my childhood. Sensei was a strict asshole and us being young kids with a lot of energy- we were just getting shit on. Incredibly so. Sensei moron was a type who, if they were legally allowed, would beat the shit out of crying kids until they would stop crying, like in the shaolin temple. I don't remember anything but running in circles a lot with very long warmups and then moving around in zenkutsu dachi for 40 minutes. Kids kept quitting classes and eventually where the sensei took away my belt for talking at the end of the class with another kid- I told my dad I never wanna go there again. I don't remember what belt I had, either yellow or orange so I endured abuse there for good 2 years. I wish that sensei was still alive, I would show up to his dojo and beat the shit out of him. - I went to a capoeira school for few classes, it was alright but teacher there had like zero authority and the structure was very loose, all excersises were "try to do that if you can" and I don't vibe with that. - Wing Chun. Oh boy. Despite training there for literally 1 hour I could write an essay on how that school was ran. Sifu dictator idiot, talking shit about other martial arts unprovoked, cult behavior amongst his students, his assistant looked like a victim of years long abuse with always sad eyes, and the instructor asked me to grab his hands (which I attempted to do) and then he elbowed my face so hard I had an internal bleeding around my sinuses and wasn't able to show up to my next 2 trainings in karate and taekwondo because I had severe headaches and bleedings. I honestly considered buying gasoline and setting fire to their school at night. Worst part was that their sifu was actually pretty good considering the shit level of wing chun in the world, so I cannot boast about going there and beating the shit out of him. I wouldn't be able to do that, which is a decent source of motivation for my training.

I have noticed that instead of belt promotions in football training and prek gymnastics promotion is based on age. So the rewards are done in a child friendly way apparently these days you have to train to teach kids stuff not just be an atthlete past your prime. But coach was telling me basically each year they enter into another formal stream based on age and if there are enough kids in that year they can play actual games together. But for summer camp the kids train together and most of the games build skills and stamina fairly obviously and he adds ways of people winning. But for young kids rigging the count so a crying kid can win next time. Same for preK gym the techniques increase based on age. 5-6 being the last where they take on handstand cartwheel forward backward roll. After that there are only two streams 6-12 gymnastics and advanced gymastics based on the equipment they train in the tumbling involved. With Karate they do have belts I guess. For black the kids will need to know the basics so 116 katas memorised. But if you had memorised the more advanced katas at a young age that's a shoo in for a medal at any competition state or national you qualify for. Higher katas have a maximum higher point value. I also noticed if you ever go on a management training say time management some of the systems of self rewards they offer seem quite childish. One had half smiley faces which you could complete once you had completed some task to encourage you to do so. People get very upset when they see children earning belts that they had to do a marathon run for and then run the gauntlet against fifty black belts and ending up in hozzie for a week but it was worth it. In the same way that some older people get upset when they see some chap earn a masters degree in something after weekend courses for one year when they did it over two years full time or some chap from a university that gives a masters degree as a first degree. Even if you point out but these are different things. The culture at the karate dojo my kids are at seems to work for the kids that last. But many drop out. I have twin girls one for now is buying into the belts the kudos the competitions. Maybe she'll end up leading some classes in ten years time. The other looks like she wants to drop out. I sort of see it as school. Not sure if you're supposed to enjoy school all that much. But if you put in the time and don't drop out then after you finish school you have a crack at going to university which you may or may not like. Then you have to work for hte rest of your life no choice. So if I put them into the dojo for ten years of their life 5 days a week it double as child care and tires them out so that hopefully they sleep at bed time. Then at the end of it they'll have the foundation of training that will help make them more confident and give them more freedom. Same way learning to swim does but differently. And the thing with kids is you don't have much choice. Most adapt to where they are put. Some drop out. The culture for now has little seepage. People bow in the dojo and they follow puinshments and honour rewards there. But outside of the dojo I don't think anyone cares. Either they learn the fundamental martial art of closing their mouths and walking away or they don't. Anything else is a bonus.

In my opinion belts are only useful in BJJ for putting people in the right skill category for competitions, in my opinion in Ninjutsu only the white belt has significance as it denotes someone at risk from the training and to train carefully, all other ranks are hierarchal and I will still take their skill with a pinch of salt until proven.

Of all the styles that I tried, the least I enjoyed was Aikido. Didnt enjoy the culture, too stiffling to my tastes. Way to much bowing, way to little humor and freedom and I found that although most people where cool, I found the most arrogant black belts. I enjoy more humor, I dont have a problem with the instructor swearing in class and I enjoy a little freedom to try moves and fool around a bit.

He was the best instructor I ever had he would teach a move or technique but allowed adaption per individual and encouraged training with others outside his club without getting annoyed. Martial arts is a learning that has to be dynamic and not a fixed repetition of form as that stifles people and not all techniques work for every person. It's a growth learned from experience but respect should be shown to the instructor sharing his knowledge and experience that being said its not blind allegiance it's mutual learning.

Respectfully, this video was a let down compared to part one. Content is good. But no bg score, interesting edits and background fun transistions. Compared to part 1. The video is boring for some reason.

I've gotten mixed signals on that. Other people have told me that the extra edits are unnecessarily distracting, so I think it's a matter of preference. I actually had background music while editing this video, and I was told to take it out. It seems that some people prefer more pizazz, and some people prefer less. However, less pizazz takes a lot less time and energy to do lol

@@ArmchairViolence I understand, it must be very difficult to edit a video this long. If not extra pizazz and fluff. Considering adding B-roll footage. And I mean this with love and respect to the hours you put into this work, at times it felt like an office presentation. These two were long videos and shares many elements to the present video's editing approach but in my opinion were very interesting due to the topic being interesting and use of b-roll footage and demos. * BJJ Self Defense Sucks * I Watched 215 Knife Encounters and Got My Video Age Restricted Anyway, I love watching your videos, your video on "The long guard" has helped me a lot. Keep it up.

Hello, Mr Violence. Nice to see you again. This only applies to tough guys smashing tough guys. I have not gone to a gym in decades and I will not be going even though I dearly want to. But people with any kind of mental disorder can be COMPLETELY turned off to gym or "organizational" structures. For instance high the functioning autistic may have problems or those with anxiety. Gyms are mostly places for power struggle and, for me, an across-the-board NASTY experience.

It sounds like you had a particularly bad experiences. I've seen many people with mental disorders get a lot out of martial arts. A lot of autistic people view it as a more structured social outlet where the expectations and hierarchy are more explicit than in most other walks of life. However, different people might prefer wildly different gym cultures, based on how their brains work.

@@ArmchairViolence Yes, I have had many difficult experiences in several attempts at sports. Sports of all kinds, as far as I can see, attract a disproportionate number of bullies. Plus I am getting old and the older you are, the more attractive you are to bullies. I'm pretty sure, in my town, if I went to a gym to learn better to defend myself, I bet I would meet several of the regular town bullies I might be defending myself from. What a choice. Thank you for your reply. Cheers!

I don't get the need for punishments. At my gym my coach just tells people off when they do something stupid and then they stop because why would they want to cause trouble? I've never seen someone get punished at my gym.

Telling people off is a type of punishment, in this context.
