Low poly is fun for refining your techniques... I kinda wish there was a competition for "visual efficiency in poly count" like it's so much fun to squeeze every ounce of detail you can, out of the handful of vertex you have, before adding more detail. It creates this ~sorta~ stylized realism look that's ideal for games.

A fun addition I found out about the limit location that may help people with a bit of OCD. If you check the box named [Affect Transform] it'll make the limit location modifier also limit the physical limits of the bone. As in, the tab named [Item] (I think), you can see the distance a thing has moved in the various axis. If you don't check that box on the modifier it'll just keep going past that point. This might cause issues if you try to get more complex with your rigging and such. I feel it should be on by default but it isn't so, there you go.

Me personally I kinda almost exclusively low poly model, and in the few years teaching myself how to do it I've come to realize that if you want to make a low poly model (whether it's N64 style, psp style or even 3ds style and PS2 style) it's best to look at 3d models from all sorts of games across all these platforms and see how they set up thier geometry and go with the ones you like. If you like arms that are 6 polygons around it's cylinder then go for it, me personally I like 4.5 polygons around it's cylinder 4 for the forearm and 5 for the bicep. If you like using triangles for joints to assist with deformation, learn how to use them effectively. Is the shape of something important to you? Consider using a triangle as long as the area doesn't require deformation (triangles can be good for deformation if used correctly). It's all just a matter of looking at these models and figure out what you like to work with. What determines how retro or unique your project looks at the end of the day is ultimately textures and shaders. You can make a N64 game look like it could have been a PS2 game with good texturing skills. This all being said I will probably download this model not to use it but to study it. I enjoy looking at how other people set up their models so I can improve upon how I model my own
@sels93324 ай бұрын
@@sakurinorth8238 Oh wow I didn't expect a comment as long as this one on my video, I appreciate the time and effort you put into writing this. I completely agree with you. Other peoples 3D models were my main source for learning how to model my own characters. I personally like my Low Poly models to be a bit more high poly than the average, and allow textures/modifiers to recreate the low poly/old game look. It makes me happy to see that other people are now using my models as reference, I'm really glad

As someone who doesn't know how to sculpt in blender I got lost after 1:03. So just sharing what I discovered. You can slow down the video to the slowest speed or go frame by frame like I did by pausing the KZbin player and pressing (, and .) The goal is to shape the shirt to be more natural. Basically meaning it's a shirt that should hang. It's not a body suit that sticks to the skin. Google image search for other characters and you can look at their clothes for some reference. Don't be a perfectionist/spend hours on the shirt. 1. Select the whole shirt in "Edit Mode" and on the left side there is a button near the bottom of the list called Shrink/Flatten. Clicking this will give you a handle/gizmo that you can drag to make the shirt expand. This helps give the shirt some separation from the base model. 2. In the upper left where it says "Edit Mode" or "Object Mode" change it to "Sculpt Mode". 3. On the left the vertical list of buttons will now have been changed to sculpting tool buttons. Put your cursor on the right side of the list and expand it to get labels to show up so you can now know the names of each tool. 4. Select the "Grab" tool button from the list. 5. In the upper right of the window you should see three buttons (X,Y,Z). Click the X button to enable mirroring of your cursor/sculpting. 6. Grab different points of the shirt until you can make it look more natural. Like it's hanging off the body and not a skin tight suit. Also fix the waist line and neck line to be more of a natural curve instead of sharp angles.
