Thanks to the nice people from ROLI for challenging me into creating something awesome with just their songmaker kit and Garageband.
Also thank you Emily Charles for pretending to fight me over your Macbook :-)
This video is about creating a song from scratch while being completely out of my comfort zone. I could not use my own computer, could not use my own library of sounds, could not play guitar, could not use my regular finger drumming techniques. So it was a lot of fun to see something cool happening regardless!

That explanation of how to take rudiment thinking to playing other instruments was really interesting.
@YourFreeBeats

What is he talking about here. I've played the piano/synths since 1974. I have been using synths for as long. I've never heard of that concept for making music (aside from the standard definition). I don't use any sort of DAW however (strictly hardware) but again unsure what he was even talking about. For drum patterns, I've even started getting away from drum machines). I like the sounds but not the synthetic flow...so just use any of my synths. JD-XA, as an example, it has virtually ever machine so if I want to play the 909 I just load that preset, and play the keys and sequence them. Done.

I really enjoyed this - I love your authentic approach and a different way to construct the music using a rudimental approach, as a percussionist this really resonated with me. I have the music in my head but lack the ability/talent to get it out because I have no knowledge of chord structures etc so this gave me great hope to try a different way. Of course I will have to experiment to make harmonic melodies but starting with the elemental beat is really a new dimension for me, I have no idea why I didn’t think of it myself! Thank you, great vid

You can increase the sensitivity on the lightpad to make it more responsive
@TheQuestforGroove
@TheQuestforGroove 2 жыл бұрын
Yes I did that actually. With the lightpad it's not as much the sensitivity as it is how it responds to my playing style and then especially how it calculates the velocities of the hits. With my way of playing it is not as consistent as a traditional pad controller.

Thanks Robert! I completely agree. The largest part of music making is in your brain :-) That's why it's easier to learn another instrument when you can already play one. There are so many things in terms of melody and harmony and rhythm that are just in your head and all you have to figure out is how to translate. Way easier than learning 'music' from scratch.

@TheQuestforGroove
@TheQuestforGroove 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that works specifically with a synth like Equator. Another great instrument is the SWAM series. Cellos, violins, woodwinds, super realistic. MPE is a gamechanger for expressiveness in software instruments but the software has to support it. For example kontakt does not make use if mpe so all of those sounds might as well be played on a regular keyboard.

I have been looking at the Seaboard a lot recently not just because it looks like something that could let me do realistic violins/cellos/flutes, but also just because of its sheer portability. I can't seem to get a good impression of how well I could use this on the road just as a simple piano for very basic chords in some songs. People focus on its expressiveness, but its sheer size and weight make it perfect for stuffing in a backpack when I travel. I don't expect it to replace a nice large piano when I'm at home.
@TheQuestforGroove
@TheQuestforGroove 5 жыл бұрын
Well you can play it like a piano but those squishy keys make it feel different. So for some simple tunes it would be fine, otherwise for more "piano virtuoso" stuff you might want to get something that has some sort of hammer action or spring thing going on.
@FloatingOnAZephyr
@FloatingOnAZephyr 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheQuestforGroove Yeah, I know it'd be a compromise, but I can just slide that into a sleeve and put it in my backpack. I can't think of another more traditional keyboard I could do that with. I mean, with practice and patience, could it record simply on-handed piano chords that sounded good? I like melancholic, minimalist piano and solo strings in my recordings.

Interestingly enough, as a guitar player with a Seaboard Rise 49, I have come to the same conclusion... I don't play it like keys (which I can play in a rudimentary way). I'm not much of a finger-drummer, either, although I have been practicing based on your tutorials. Anyway, I have found that playing the Seaboard in this way is much more rewarding than trying to play it like it had discrete keys.

@TheQuestforGroove

Haha, so glad you enjoyed that little scene :-) The keyboard responds pretty well actually, but I don't know... for finger drumming theres something weird about it being so soft. As i f you're hitting a mattress or something. Its feels unnatural to really play percussive stuff on it. But it's a nice piece of equipment. I also compared it to linnstrument and found linnstrument to be even more expressive when using it to play flute. But hey that's a $1500 device... :-)

Roli is really cool thing. I started with 0 experience in music with roli seaboard block alone. Now i have Songmaker kit as well which means i have 4 octaves + drum kit. it is really hard to apply common piano\drums lessons just because ROLI is small + without additional settings it has zero tolerance to mistakes, I immediately hear that velocity or duration was wrong. It is really hard to use ROLI for beginners. BUT what doesn't kill us makes us better. I really enjoy playing with ROLI today, even with simple but high quality techniques i have learned, i can really relax and play what i want and hear MY own beautiful sounds. This realy helps in real life to overcome own barriers and move further. I really appreciate this tutorial, i hope you will do more. Something like Beginner Course but using ROLI block or song maker kit. Nowadays there are a lot of promotion videos but there are no good beginner tutorials for ROLI. Now I know that everything is possible with ROLI but i have spend more then 2 years practicing alone with no support. Which is quite high price for already pricey toys.

@TheQuestforGroove

Well... yes and no. The device and software is easy to use but you need experience in music making to quickly come up with melodies and chords and stuff like that, that will not feel effortless in the beginning!

I did. It works fine with my windows laptop but that said: the lightpad block is not the best thing for finger drumming in my opinion! There might also be some 'lag' in how both the seaboard and the lightpad block respond because of their squishyness. It's a fun kit and I love the roli equator synth but personally I'm not switching to this as my main rig for music making anytime soon :-)

This is called "the roli song maker kit". It consists of 3 blocks that you can use together. A block for fingerdrumming called lightpad block, a seaboard block which is like a piano and a control block with buttons like "play" and "record". All sounds come from apple garageband.
