You're the first person I've ever heard explain how a client's audience impacts the licensing fee so well. That's gold. Thank you!

I've used Blinkbid for years. For probably 80% of my career I've had agents who do the bid/estimate work but we always discuss first and my agent sends me her figures before they go to a client. Without an agent I would regularly underbid without knowing I was underbidding. Your list of resources I think must be super helpful for photographers just getting new jobs and commercial work and trying to make sense of pricing out jobs.

Definitely super tricky to figure out without an agent. Sounds like you’ve had a great agent relationship 🙌

Thanks for this! I’m based in the Netherlands and we don’t have so much information available online like the sites you are talking about. Lately I feel like nobody wants to pay a normal fee for photography but I’m hanging in there and as you say, we do valuable work! I'm not afraid to say no to a client because I don't want to be known only as the cheap photographer 😅

Thanks for this it was helpful! I have allowed a company to use the photos for the duration of our contract vs a license fee outside of that. How much do you license per image for 6 months usage?

I love Blinkbid (thanks to Joanies recommendation)! It's so tailored to photographers. Only thing is because it's US software, I cant integrate it into my Australian bookkeeping software (Xero) as it only integrates to alternate bookkeeping software, Quickbooks, if your operating in US dollars.

I needed this! I recently did a 4 day shoot and only charged £400 (and I haven't been charging licensing because I don't really understand it). That was actually the most I have ever charged as usually Clients say it's too much. Do I need to find better Clients? I'm always scared to contact larger brands as I don't have a following, but there are no local companies with any sort of budget. For example, I shot for a coffee comapny who thought £120 was too much. Is it ok to say no, as right now I am struggling financially.

Why you change your intro opening line from shaken bacon to this? Just wondering hehe
@TheBiteShot
@TheBiteShot 2 жыл бұрын
Ha ha! Felt like it was time for a change. Four years of shakin' bacon and I figured it was time to simplify things, do away with the intro and get straight to the video. Anyone who knows the bacon reference I'll always know has been around for a while!

Great infromation. Question, how do you figure out charging if a company expects to use the photos forever. How does a perpetual license affect licensing for you? Or do you just set a long term 7-10 year use license on these calculators and check in down the line?

Would the usage fee be per individual photo or all photos of the particular photo shoot done at that time?
@TheBiteShot
@TheBiteShot 2 жыл бұрын
It's generally on a per photo basis, but you can package multiple images together.

As a commercial photographer, should you keep ownership of your work and license it out to the client, be the best route?
@TheBiteShot
@TheBiteShot 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the majority of the time unless it's a really big company with a big budget and compelling reason to need the copyright, best practice is to retain copyright and license the images to the client based on the use they need.

hi Joanie. quick question. To calculate the licensing for example for a packaging for a food manufacturer. how do you decide the duration of the license? Since it is a package is going to be in the market for a while? I am a bit lost :)
@TheBiteShot
@TheBiteShot 2 жыл бұрын
Great question! For packaging the primary thing that determines pricing of the license is the number of units.

Thank you so much for all these informational videos! I'm still trying to figure out all the "non-photo" part (how many photos to give clients, which format, besides pricing and contract/licensing etc.). I wonder if there is any professional I can hire to explain how that works (small city with no friends or photographers community). Thanks anyway for the info in this video!

There's definitely a lot that goes into building a food photography business so I can definitely empathize. For sure setting rates that are high enough to cover your bottom line and assessing what you need to earn to set your goals for photography work is a big part of the equation. It's more expensive to run a photography business than a lot of people think!

The next step for you, Joanie, is to get into Iron Man's suite. I can already see you in my mind's eye talking to J.A.R.V.I.S (onboard AI system): "Jarvis, give me an estimate for this job right now" "Coming up, ma-am" Actually it is quite a good idea for a photo session - Joanie dressed in Iron Man's suite with Stars and Stripes as your background. And a slogan something like: "Always Ready To Meet The Challenge". The Bite Shot. Click magazine' cover.
