Great video. One suggestion for sharing with clients in real time: Shoot tethered on Lightroom Classic but have a collection open which syncs to Lightroom (cloud). Then in the cloud version, share the album (that's what they call a collection in Lr - no clue why they can't use the same terminology). By providing the share link to your client, you simply drop any shot that you consider a pick into the collection on LrC. It will sync to Lr and the client can immediately view it through their link. (This will be even smoother when Adobe finally gets around to adding tethering to Lightroom cloud, but I find this method easy to setup). Also, you don't have to be in continuing contact with the client as they can select and even comment on any photo and that feedback will come back to your copy.

Joanie, Like the majority of youtube tethering videos, your on the computer "live view" screens appear to be of stellar quality and would definitely allow for accurate composition adjustments but, more important to me, pin sharp focus adjustments prior to actually taking the first shot. I'm using a Nikon D7200, the correct cable, as well as a capable desk top windows 10 computer and there is no software I have found yet that gives me much more than a low res on the computer screen live view; it's OK for composition adjustments, but absolutely have to take a shot to determine focus perfection, therefor wasting time and resources. One conclusion is the D7200 is far inferior to almost every other camera used in tethering videos for on the computer screen live view. Or, I'm missing something very obvious in setup, or, I need a better camera. None of the youtube tether videos every approach the subject of live view on screen quality, so must ask, how are you getting what appears to be pin sharp live views on your computer screen?

Thanks for all this great information! I am tethering for the first time capturing watches which I need to keep the face of the watch in focus even when it is angled to camera (in 4 views) and this will speed up the work checking focus on a large laptop screen for capturing 100 watches for an online client site. I will use Lightroom CC capture or Nikon NX software but not at the same time as you mentioned. If I do tethering a lot this year I may go to Capture One later on. Cheers! (I capture food occasionally but mostly small products for Amazon or resellers.)

Well done. Your food photography is excellent. I've been using C1 for ages and, more recently, tethered to a Canon R5. Are you using TTL or manual flash groups? I've noticed w/ Godox, sometimes flash groups don't fire in manual mode. Wondering if you've encountered this issue. P.S... just a tiny nit, but the plural of software is "software" (not "softwares"). You can say something like "...different companies offer their own software packages", etc.

@andyvan56922 жыл бұрын
great video, nice to have a run down of what tethering is, and HOW to do it step by step. also one feature of tethering you didn't mention, if you use MF digital cameras like phase one, Hasselblad; or a LF camera with a digital back, you can use tethering as a control interface with the camera (PHASE ONE/Hasselblad/mamiya645/Contax645 even to the custom settings of the body, button layouts,etc.), this also gives access to flash sync on profoto/broncolor pack/head systems, as the back is the A-D convertor for the trigger signal, and info for the auto functions (ttl, flash duration) as an in lens shutter is just a switch, so you need the software to do the controlling of the system, but this software still needs a connection to the lens, the teathering cable is this connection.

If i understand, it is better to set camera in AF-S and press AF button in C1 ? if not good enough should we use the leftand arrow icons to focus better ?

Sony is difficult to use tethered. I finally gave up and use my Fuji's which work flawlessly.
@Graham_Wood2 жыл бұрын
One problem I have tethering with Lightroom is that I can't find a way to zoom in on live view and check your focus or pick the focus point before taking the shot. You can only check focus after taking the shot and some times it takes 3 or 4 shots to get it right. I use a 5D4 so I know that Capture One can do it but I don't really want to add another subscription to my existing Adobe one. Capture One definitely won't entertain my Pentax 645Z so I have to use manufacturer's software for tethering and auto-import into Lightroom. As you say, live view is crucial especially with the camera hanging off the boom on a C stand. Does anyone know of a way to zoom in on the live view window in Lightroom? Adobe say's Cmd and + but that only works on the main image window. I love your video's by the way.
@leeshdoggydogg2 жыл бұрын
One more question if you don’t mind! I noticed how you changed the autofocus/iso/etc by using the laptop (not the camera) before taking the photo. Does this laoptop/camera feature work with older cameras (ie canon 5d mark iii)?
@Graham_Wood2 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry. Another question. In Capture One Live view, do you get the option to turn off exposure view. If you are cutting out ambient light and just using flash you will just see a black screen otherwise. Thank you again.

Hey Joanie, I need your recommendation please. I am shooting with a Canon rebel t7 and dropped it last week and broke the kit lens. I currently have a 50mm lens. But I need to buy another lens so I don’t have so much boaka in the background. What lens would you recommend I get? Thank you so much for your time. I love your videos and have watched for several years now. All the best, Fred
@TheBiteShot2 жыл бұрын
Hi! A 50mm can still be used in a way that allows for wider depth of field and less bokeh if you increase the number on the aperture. As far as a second lens, just all depends on what kind shooting you like to do. I am a big fan of longer focal lengths like the 100mm f2.8 for close up macro shots. But zoom lenses like the kit lens or a 24-70mm can be nice if you like a versatile lens that can zoom and zoom out depending on the subject and the framing you want.

I actually use dragonframe sometimes since I mostly do stop motion. If you own it anyway it can be used to tether. ❤️ Also, I used to love Adorama but a recent bad CS experience has me throwing up my hands. @TheBiteShot2 жыл бұрын
Depends on which camera you're shooting, but if your camera is capable of it, be sure to disable the Exposure Simulation (Canon) or Exposure Preview (Nikon). that allows you to see the scene in live view even if you're eliminating the ambient exposure

Unfortunately I tripped over the tethering cable. Something inside of the cable head came out and the camera port stopped working😢. I was panic and hoping it was just temporarily out of order but it just didn't work anymore even after changing a new cable. Fortunately, after searching solution on line I found out that my Canon EOS R supported Wifi tethering!! The downside is I cannot use regular wifi while I am shooting. So it won't be possible to use the internet and do a remote collaboration with a client. I don't offer remote shooting service yet, if I do, I'll have to spend $$$ to fix camera port. The good part with Canon Wifi tethering is I never have to worry about tripping over, pulling the cable again. Wifi tethering may be somewhat slower but my business is small and I'm ok at this moment.
