I found out that my dahlia bed was not a forever bed after the first two years. Messing with all those tubers, wrapping them, storing them, replanting those that survived, staking, trellising, netting, UGH! The reward was not there. Somethings take too much time and are just too much trouble for me, CBA. I will live vicariously thru you and your lovely garden and will very much appreciate your hard work and efforts for a beautiful dahlia garden (And of course, be very jealous!).

I am going to plant out all the seedlings and at the end of the season decide which ones I want to save. I don't think I'll be keeping them all
@ChrisCalmtheCrazy5 ай бұрын
@@growformegardening I recommend keeping most of them. Many will not make it to the next season and you will want to have as many as possible for all your efforts. Also, first year tubers are small and extremely difficult to survive the cold season.

OMG! This was much fun to watch. I recently created a new bed of my own. As a women, I was not going to dig up the sod, had my hubby do the laborious work. It’s no joke how hard it is to pull up grass. I did extra work by shaking off as much dirt from each sod to save soil as possible. It paid off. Great job guys!

...I enlarged a small area this weekend, and it nearly killed me! Wrangling sod is no joke! If you have an area to reuse (or chuck) it, it's sooo much easier to deal with. I had a pop-up bag not even filled by 1/4, and I had to divide it up into another one -- I could barely drag 'em to my truck to dump off site. (Of course clods of clay [I mean CLODS!] didn't help the situation either.) 🥴🤷🏼♀️🥵 from 👩🏼🌾💚 =^..^= [MD, now 7a]

Congrats guys on your new beds. I agree I have no patience either but for me an easier way I do b/c removing grass is so hard. In the fall I put down the cheap weed fabric from Lowes. Shape the bed how I want it. Put a few bags of mulch on it so it will look pretty during fall & winter. And by spring time the grasses is dead you can remove the fabric since its a very thin layer of mulch and you can start planting. Only cleaning up is the edges in spring. Which i like an inch or less. It worked when I created a vegetable garden. I added a new one last fall in the front of house for this year.
@growformegardening5 ай бұрын
That's a good idea to do it in the fall.

The sod removal isn’t any less awkward. Either a shovel or pulling by hand. In this case we had friends taking the sod home so that helped!

You showed how to use the edger to create the shape and size, but you still need to show how you removed the grass. That's the part I find the hardest. I hoped to see your technique for cutting the grass roots out and leaving behind as much dirt as possible. I ask this because I have numbness in my hands from the hard labor I am doing in the garden. Any easier tips would be helpful. Love your channel!
