This video explains the process of creating miniature timber using 3D-scanning. It also explains how to paint and weather them for a realistic appearance. The miniature timber cargo set in H0-scale can be used both for decoration, loading areas and on open freight cars of dioramas and model railways.
Creality recently launched the 3D-scanner "Otter" recently, which makes scanning faster, more accurate and easier than ever before. Timber is scanned in less than 10 minutes and can then through down-scaling be used in any type of diorama or in the scenery of a Model railway.

Looks okay, but I missed the time that you make that kind of stuff by yourself with some real tree pieces.

Great work as usual, but.....always a but, it seems that you're more and more interested in "selling" expensive digital tools than in the hobby itself. I really miss your videos from years ago where you shared your extraordinary abilities to do a lot of stuff that we, hobby train lovers, don't even think that would be possible to make with simple everyday life things and your own hands and lovely handycraft. I hope you'll be able to go back to those lovely videos from time to time. Thank you for sharing!

Isn't that the metamorphosis of every good YT-channel? They start off sharing their passion and putting in their life's blood. But once a fairly large community forms, and they gain partnerships for advertisements, content-frequency and / or -quality declines. Although, to be fair, I haven't checked back at patreon in a while to see what's going on over there.

I don’t really agree. I feel like we’re really breaking new grounds for the Model railway community. I could not have done it without the support from both viewers, Patrons, donors and the sponsoring companies. Everyone wants thier part from this joint effort. I think showing 60 seconds of products is a fair trade. I’m very selective choosing what products and brand to promote on the channel. They should contribute to the hobby and not only be a sponsor of fundings. Some of the gadgets seems pricy at this time, but remember that what you are presented here represent tomorrows modelling tech, which gradually become more affordable as developments are on-going. Please also feel free to read comments from videos where I present traditional modelling techniques. They typically say like ”I’ve seen this before” or ”I didn’t learn anything new from this video”.

Looks great! Several people in the comments being nostalgic about making scale logs from real trees, and I understand their thoughts, but to me that was always one of the things that never looked right to me but everyone seemed to accept. Real tree twigs have nothing like scale bark, and to me it always just looks like twigs. It's great to have something that's actually looking like a scaled down real log.

Martin, I say this with great respect and as a long time fan of your work - your actual hands-on work - your channel has kind of morphed into one big sales pitch for 3D printing everything - even when you’re walking through woodland where natural materials could have been collected to make exactly what you wanted to make in this video WITHOUT having to waste more plastics, energy, other materials and quite frankly, time. A twig is a perfect representation of a branch as it is. We don’t need to scan, print, paint etc etc etc. You have made yourself look both avaricious and really rather silly in this video. It’s sad to see what’s happened. Goodbye

Whilst you were in the forest. Wouldn't it have been a much cheaper and quicker method to have just picked up a few twigs and used them. You couldn't have got more natural than that.

Thank you for commenting. Well, I have done such videos in the past already. Also making foliage for trees from moss and trunks from wooden sticks. But honestly.. How much would you have learned from a video seeing me picking up and cutting twigs in the forest? I rather push the limits somewhat, than presenting the obvious, already known by everyone technique, which only gives you an average result. Organic materials also tend to change over time and/or grow fungus. No, it’s not how I would like to position myself and my KZbin channel.

That was some fascinating new aspect to scale modeling displayed there. Well done, Martin. One thing to remember is that lumber usually starts losing the vibrant sap and hard color on the end grain pretty fast, even when protected with Anchorseal and similar to prevent checking. So darker tones and grays are also viable when portraying lumber that was sawn some time ago. Just two cents adding on your great work. Cheers.

Really nice such a 3D -scanning application! But to be honest, the saw cut parts doesn't look real to me. I'm missing the annual rings (is it possible to scan some variation on the saw cut sides of some logs, and use that in combination with it?), color variation and it's a bit to yellow for me. But for the rest, nice to how realistic those tree logs are!

If I may, I think you could have brought those trees to the next level by modeling some concentric rings on the edge, just the tiniest of ridges, then perhaps the same technique as you used for the bark, get some dark in the crevasses then the yellowish on the edges.

Hello Märklinofsweden, ich watch your videos since the first days and I miss the wonderfull things you made with simple things like cardboard or styrofoam. Nowadays you very often use the 3d printer, and that makes me sad, because its the holy grail of model building, but its losse the idea of creating something with your creativity. Please do morde of the simple things, because you have good ideas. Show more of the easy things than building everything with the printer....thx and so long, greetings michaelofcuxhaven

Quite the nifty method. 3D printing seems to get a tad of overexposure in the hobby perhaps. My first go-to for logs would be finding something in nature and work with it. However, it must be said that the fidelity by this method is of course stellar.

Hey Martin! Fantastic video as usual. Just a few questions... 1. I assume you did the washing process on your 3D printed log bundles before priming? 2. The primer you used (Tamiya?); was that specifically for resin? Did you have to do any other prep prior to priming? The logs looks great! I have read reviews re. the Creality scanner. Its been getting great reviews. Mosquitos! The bane of our existence! Be careful with those little blood suckers. The US is experiencing a spread of a few mosquito-borne diseases.

It's an interesting idea for sure, to scan real trees and print them as freight for your model rail. I would be interested in scanning miniature parts, like bogies etc. and printing them as spare parts. Or modify the scans for kitbashing etc. I'm not sure what's really on the market for miniature scanning.

It looks great and sure does the job but at $1500.00 Au that is very expensive... I personally, still prefer the original real piece of a tree used for wagons and the like..I try to use real items where possible and just use smaller pieces for scale size.

Just my 5 cents from Germany. I'm watching your channel since years, you created realistic water made by toilet paper. My deep respect 👍.. But since you more and more making projects with the support of a 3D printer, I'm less interested of your channel. The whole things you need for digital realistic model railroad is expensive enough. I will never buy a 3D printer or any scanner. 😮
