These sort of jobs are for storage spaces in lofts, whilst it would look neater it would add significant cost to remove purlin supports and add in steel/ glulams. Not to mention then its more involvement and cost with building control. When all the customer would have wanted is an insulated storage space.

Fabulous transformation. Questions: loft hatches are notoriously skimpy and narrow and pathetically small in modern properties. Have you ever done reconstruction work on a hatch that both widens and elongates it? What I'd want, money-no-object, would be just this, then fit in an electric ladder that opens the hatch and down comes the ladder, the motor stops and allows you to then climb easily and safely up into the loft. Then of course would come the flooring as shown here and the boarding up for the 2 pitches of the roof, fabulous lighting, even power points. Can it be done and would planning permission be required? The 2nd question is: what about having the fancy, LED RECESSED lighting in the 2 bedrooms below the loft space and also for the airing cupboard and landing. The shower room here has already been transformed, but they put in a false ceiling to accommodate the recessed lighting. Fair enough. But if I wanted the original ceiling height in 2 bedrooms RETAINED, does a special recess/box not need to be fitted in the loft, BEFORE it's all sealed off so that, any electrician can then go into the loft and then into the box/recess to deal with the lower rooms' lighting, etc? I'd be interested in your feedback.

Got a quick question about the bearers you cut here. I have the same issue in my loft, but I'm not comfortable with cutting them like you have (I'd probably take my bloody hand off!) If I attach some 2x2s to the top of the existing joists with Gorilla Glue and screws (to add extra height), then cross brace with 5x2 like you have here, is that something that will add strength? Having the 2x2s on top will mean I can board over the top of the bearers without cutting them (we have a lot of head height so not bothered about losing a bit). We also have a supporting wall below so the spans are quite short. Any advice is appreciated, cheers!

Hello friend, As long as you are using the space for storage your method should be fine. It will not be strong enough for habitable

@@builditwithrob sorry Rob got another question! Our main aim for our loft is a storage with a secondary use of a cinema room with a wall mounted projector and some bean bags. Would this sort of floor be alright for occasional use for the above with two people sitting up there (so not a party room)? Thanks again!

I got a company in to add a loft hatch with pull down stairs so I could use the loft as storage. They didn't sheet up correctly and destroyed brand new carpets (we bought a done up house from a builder). Looking how much you sheeted up in the landing and stairs just goes to show me what they should have done. We refused to pay them until they sorted the carpets as they were covered in black dust and stained. They refused so we never paid them. The carpets had to stay destroyed until we recently changed them.

Hello sunflower it’s standard practice for us to sheet walls and floors nobody wants black hand prints all over walls

Seems extreme for storage, cant be used as a room as would not meet building regs.

Who puts sockets in attic `storage'. People illegally use them as habitable rooms as its a fraction of a proper conversion with the small annoyance of using a ladder. Just have to hope you never have a fire.

Excuse my ignorance but what’s a fire got to do with it?

@@zainshah1975 because someone may use one of these ‘storage’ rooms as an actual bedroom and they don’t comply with fire regs that are applicable for habitable rooms at this level

Working in a mask is miserable but an air mover to shift the dust and fluff outside would ave it clear in no time so you'd not need the make for long.

Looking for loft conversion on a 4-bed property in Torquay Devon, don`t for one moment you guys are interested by any chance? I do think since you put your professional work on YT that I would have to wait at least a two weeks for a quote and a two / three-month B4 start date? If you are interested, please respond. Great channel btw Steve
