I am a very visual person who has a hard time picturing what something will look like until I see it. So mapping is the absolute hardest part of this for me. Characters, story, dialog, quests, events, etc. all seem easy compared to mapping! Thanks for breaking things down and offering additional insight and perspective. I just can’t believe RPG Makers first came out so long ago and I never discovered them! I would have started doing this 30 years ago! But better late to the game than never! Thanks again for these.

You could have used dead trees for the volcanic region, just to make the statement it's not like moving to another planet.

I know its an old video but i wanna talk about what you said around minute 26:00 isnt it odd that you "plan" as a developer - even in a free, open world - to hinder and limit a players choices by blocking this laval-region with mountains? i mean, in the end you could make it possible to access even in the very beginning of teh game but make the enemies very hard no offense! but i just realised that by watching your video, that alot of games are going teh same way as you went here. sorry for the bad english. entertaining videos so far!

Really what you are describing here is the debate between reality and the illusion of choice. Both situations involve gating off sections of the game in order to keep the player on track. In my case, I made it apparent what was intended at a glance. It's not likely a player is going to make the mistake of thinking that that direction is the way they are supposed to go. The can clearly see they can't get over there yet. In your situation, it requires the player to venture over there and learn the hard way that's not the intended path. While both have their pros and cons, both are valid ways of design. It's up to you to decide which is the best way to present your intended progression to your player for your specific project.
