This was very insightful and helpful. It reminded me that like everything else its best to start small and build upon them. With my first RPG map making wasn't really clicking but I've just designed two towns for my second and its already a vast improvement from the previous RPG. Thanks!

Thanks for this. Mapping is always interesting for me to see since it is my nemesis! I can recreate what I see, but visualizing something and then making it isn’t my strength. I find some of the criticisms, while old, somewhat amusing. When I am testing things that I am building, I go very simple. I guess it depends on whether the intent is to show mapping functionality, to give advice on map making, or to demonstrate a personal opinion on what a map is supposed to look like. Personally, I have always found it odd that many video games don’t show enough housing for people to live. I know there is a balance, but some games make me scratch my head more than others. Like where do all these NPCs live? Great advice about trying to make sure your local maps fit in with the world map too. Thanks!

Thanks for the cool video tutorial. I have been designing these games for 6 years now!! Completed " The Adventures of Squeak! " in VX Ace as well as, " Quest of King's " in VX Ace! I just don't have them up on Steam because I don't think a $100 fee to upload a game like these is going to reap enough rewards! However i do it because I have a fatal brain disease, and my cognitive thinking ability is about -100 so I continue to do what I can and have fun doing it and being creative! Thanks again! BTW let me know if your interested in helping me upload my games, or maybe a demo on them first.

Nothing inspired me more than learning to take photoshop and scale down real objects. Reminded me of arcade. Next came reprogramming this editor to handle 2d pop up images like a pop-up book. Then realizing I took a year teaching myself to program a program is the problem. Don't be me! It did work however.

Great info, thanks! I haven't watched everything, so excuse me if a question is already addressed elsewhere. Anyway, is there a limit to the size of World/town maps? I have a large world in mind for a large scale game. I'm worried that there are limits. Also, does world size dramatically impact PC performance? I don't have the best available by far.

You don't so much erase tiles as paint over them with other tiles.

is it possible to make the rpg into some sort of modern setting with a hint of sci-fi, fantasy and horror?

Totally! That would really just require swapping out graphics, terms, etc.

I really liked your channel but I gotta admit im not a fan of houses where the wall is only one tile high. I dont like this nes style. Keep your good work going. Im looking forward to see more of them!
@BenderWaffles9 жыл бұрын
+Keven Rabe That's fair. A lot of stuff like that is completely personal opinion. I personally think about it like this: a tile is representative of the size of one person. So you could assume that a one story house would only be one tile high. At least, that's the way it works out in my mind. If you watch my vid "Castle in the Snow" (*cough* kzbin.info/www/bejne/paarl6d9istqobs *cough*) you see that I do in fact use two-tile high buildings, they just represent two-story buildings. To each their own I guess! :)
@Lord_Rabe9 жыл бұрын
BenderWaffles Just had to get it off my mind. I agree that its a personal opinion and I would admit that this is the way that the tiles are meant to be used. I just really miss the look of the rpg xp though... :(

for a world map what was the width and height you set it to?
@BenderWaffles8 жыл бұрын
It really depends on how big your game is. Personally though, I find that either 100x100 or 150x150 is sort of the sweet spot.

Ah ok, Well thank you so much i been working on my little final fantasy project game since i was 6 and i been doing it all on paper so happy that i got rpg maker mv so i started playing it and customizing my stuff but idk how to do get the entrance to work i also haven't figured out how to get a prologue or cinematic scene to work. btw keep up the good work love it man.

Well, I just went to RPG Maker's websiteto buy MV. THen I saw the $80 price tag and went back to VX Ace
@BenderWaffles7 жыл бұрын
+Withos Empire Yea that's the base cost of the program. However, as I have said before, if you watch the price on Steam as opposed to the official site, you'll often be able to grab it for much, much cheaper. Humble Bundle is also a pretty good place to look. Just gotta keep on eye out for sales and such.

This may be a stupid question, but can you load a project made in VX Ace into MV?
@BenderWaffles8 жыл бұрын
You can! After a bit of work converting it. I actually did a video on it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmbKhayIidd6hK8 Note that you'll have to manually move over your assets (graphics, sounds and such) to avoid getting a bunch of error messages, but it works. Hope that helps :)
@AdventOtaku8 жыл бұрын
BenderWaffles Thanks for answering. Though, i'm not an expert of game making or scripts or anything of the sorts. I only own VX Ace, which I mainly just mess around on. I don't know if I'll get MV, and even if I do, I may not do much with it besides mess around.

Excuse me, but i'm a little confused... I was watching the next video in this series, and i wanted to know something: How do you connect the town map to the world map?

GameLog A simple warp event. Similar to when you go in and out of a building.

Just my opinion. THe types of world maps he showed are lazy to me. Why have that map like that, when you can have one that has you walking the paths in the forests and not walking through some tiny little tree tiles on a map. Like the Pokémon games do, that is how my game does maps.
@BenderWaffles7 жыл бұрын
+Withos Empire it really comes down to what sort of RPG you are doing. Both styles are very viable. For instance, making a traditional JRPG in the vain of Final Fantasy or Dragon Warrior? Then a world map like this is the way to go. Something a bit more linear? Then what you suggested is best. Each way has it's pros and cons and their own flavor.
@ThePsychicPineapple7 жыл бұрын
He complains about 1 tile wide paths n a video, and then proceeds to make 1 tile wide paths,
@BenderWaffles7 жыл бұрын
+Withos Empire 1 tile wide paths have their place within certain situations. It's much more of a guideline than a rule. Hell, I'd even go so far as to say it's more of a personal preference even! When it comes down to it, it's best to think more in terms of what is going to be best for the map overall. Do I like 1-tile wide paths? Nope, but I still use them when it looks and feels best. Just gotta play things by ear.
