In this video, I share some of my favourite creative lighting techniques! I'll go over the different lighting I use, how I modify it, and how you can iterate on these techniques to create experimental set ups of your own! I show in-camera examples of many of the looks I discuss, as well as my own photos captured using each set up.

How fun! I'm sold on the mylar, so many cool effects to be done there. I used to mess around with light painting back in my lomography days, but I never tried fiberoptic brushes, that is a very cool effect indeed. I'm not a big fan of continuous lighting, but I do like how LED's are evolving rapidly. I see a lot of other strobe purists experimenting with LED more and more. I can see why. I may have to give it a go, It does look like a more effecient way to experiment with color-blending than gels. Now if only I could flat a couple V-Flats in my little living room studio, I'd be solid, lol. I'll probably just have to get some plywood and fashion something. Definitely would love to see more of these fun idea sharing videos if you do feel inclined to make more. Cheers Yvonne! 😁💙📸

I was a strobe-only photog up until recently, but bringing the nanlite into the picture really changed my workflow because it is so bright! They do sell half v flats if you need em haha but a black bedsheet would probably do just as well in many cases

Omfg this was incredibly inspiring. I’m definitely going to be shooting more with mylar. I just always have an issue taking the picture with the weird angle you have to shoot at. I love your dark art/dark fashion photos!

I don't do a lot of work with artificial light; I did in the past and still have some of the bits lying around. But these shots you're getting are amazing!

"You can make any vision come to life with lighting" - I don't think that can be said any better than that. As a mostly studio photographer myself (with lots of lights) I am constantly amazed at how many photographers just simply don't even try to learn the basics and experiment around, failure to do so is just wasted creative potential. You don't even have to spend a lot on lights. A basic Edison utility type lamp with a reflector with one of those clips (the kind of utility lamps you get at the hardware store), a basic 12x12 inch gel set, and some clothesline clips to hold the gels onto the lamp reflector just is not expensive. Put a nice 150W equivalent LED bulb in it and you can now experiment around with lighting position, and lighting color, all for less than $100. It's absurd how many people don't do the most basic of experimentation like that.

I agree! When people proudly announce that they are "all natural light" photographers, it just tells me they are intimidated by learning to use lighting! Though I'm sure I'm making assumptions, I always prefer the look of controlled/designed lighting over having random shadows and light sources

@@YvonneHansonPhotography LOL... whenever I hear that they shoot "natural light" (and say it like an Artiste), my inside voice goes "so you know what good light looks like, but you don't know how to make it". I generally try to encourage them to try out lighting, but I think it's just a combination of intimidation of the gear, and not wanting to look like they don't know what they're doing that holds many of them back. I was at a seminar once where Gregory Heisler (yes, *that* Gregory Heisler) was doing a lighting demonstration, and the airline misrouted a bunch of his luggage and so he didn't have any of his normal lighting equipment, so he ran down to the Home Depot down the street from where the seminar was, and spent probably $100 or so on a handful of utility lamps and did the entire seminar with those, and I gotta say, those images were stunning. Light is light. You can either choose to control it or not.
