I grew up in a culture where most people grew a garden, most grew the same crops, gardened the same way and prepared mostly traditional foods. This video was wonderful. I’ve never seen veggies prepared like this before. Such an amazing education I’m getting here.

Hi Charles, I understand it’s not easy to chefs to come to you that often, but this kind of video is what I would watch every month if you could. I’m limiting myself to grow what I know how to cook, but having someone going around the garden collecting veg and making meals with what’s available is what I’d love to see more often. Thank you for everything you doing. 😊

Charles really is a superb disseminator of knowledge & has significantly increased the productivity of my fruit & vegetable growing. Making your own compost is great but it can become addictive - was fishing the other week & there was a big pile of weed pulled from the lake & another of chipped willow branches from the last work party. All now stacked on my allotment for future use.😁

Lol. 7 year old me arrived home from school to find mother not arrived back. It felt like a long wait and the only "food" available was a sack of potatoes dressed in their dirt. Hi Charles, I noticed some black material covering the soil where the squashes are growing. Question, do you lay plastic so that the squashes grow without touching the soil (avoid rotten)? I ask because I had this issue with my pumpkins last year, they have rotten from picking up moisture from the ground so I had been wondering how to deal with this next season. Would love to hear your approach. Daniela from Australia.
@CharlesDowding1nodig
@CharlesDowding1nodig Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment Daniela and that piece of black plastic is to smother weeds because just four months earlier it had been a weedy block of pasture, growing very strongly. It works well to make a few holes and plant squash into the compost and soil below the plastic. I actually find with winter squash that they survive nicely even on wet plastic, or soil, without any support under them. Pumpkins maybe are softer skinned.

The rhubarb leaf does help to lure the pests away from other plants and the rhubarb itself. I always scatter the leaves around after a harvest. Plus it adds nutrients back into the soil as it degrades.

This was amazing. Esp. all the odd bits of knowledge and questions, ideas etc. that came up as you walked the garden ! Raw potatoes - yes, when I was very young my teenage aunts, who lived next door ( up the road, on the main farm property w my Grandma, here in Wisconsin, USA on a dairy farm my folks run today), helped my grandma in their large garden and introduced us to snacking on a fresh, raw potato. Sliced up and sprinkled w salt n pepper. Delicious ! Years later, when she had a garden of own again on their Arizona property, her own children were astonished that one could ( or WOULD) eat a raw potato, and also enjoyed it.

Great video! Nice to see a kiwi, from a fellow kiwi's perspective, making amazing food and doing well. Shows what type of healthy meals you can make from vegetables even those "going over".

I've never seen some of these veggies cooked on a grill open flame. I love charred food. Thanks for having chef on to show us the possibilities.

This was such a fun episode. I love them all, don't get me wrong, but I totally cook like this in the summer, though with far less panache! It was great to see such kitchen creativity and simplicity all at once! I am inspired!

I semi watched/listened whilst emptying & cleaning my bath, & letting a soaking wet cat in etc. I will definitely be watching properly & taking notes as super interesting. Was also happy to know I wasn’t the only person with no idea of (even) what part of a herb you should harvest ;) 🥰

Lovely video, I love to be able to utilise as much of my garden vegetables as possible so this was great. Last weekend at our country town had its annual Agricultural Show (kind of like a Fair) and won First Prize for my mixed box of vegetables, the first time I have entered. I was told that if I had of entered my Vegetables as seperate entries I would of won every category except for pumpkin. I was asked my methods and I was really happy to say No Dig! Thanks Charles for everything I have learnt from you over the last 18 months.

starting 23:44 or so .. what an AMAZING stand of squash plants! So tall and proud! In my area, unfortunately, I havent found out yet how to keep the squash vine borer moth from decimating them at that stage from looking like they have been deprived of water.
