A) the steel of the bolt and nuts is way too soft to sharpen any knife steel. As you can see, the tomato still gets squished during cutting even after "sharpening" B) it is pretty dangerous to repurpose a power drill like this C) putting all the parts together takes much longer than using a measly 5-bucks drag-though sharpener that also will get you a better result. D) The botton-of-a-ceramic-cup-hack does work as the material is basically the same as that of a whetstone E) it works even better when you don't drag the blade in a radial motion (blade tip pointing towards the center of the cup) as shown here, but perpendicular to the coarse rim of the cup. F) While the ceramic part of the spark plug works as an abrasive, this method is a waste of time, effort and material.
@KendrasEdge7577 ай бұрын
100%, just buy a ceramic rod to hone the edge or a basic 20• carbide pocket sharpener. Hell; the edge of your car/truck window glass will hone the edge like a ceramic rod will. Every tractor supply or Walmart sells those pull through carbide sharpeners for $10. Makes all this in the video a complete waste of time.

The ceramic mug thing actually works, I've done it in the past. This man's technique needs some work however.
@steinlaus20727 ай бұрын
Depends on the hardness of the steel and the ceramic type of the mug. With very hard knife steel above 62 HRC, some ceramics are too soft. Then it needs diamond coated grinding surfaces.
@llltrac91435 ай бұрын
@@steinlaus2072 HRC is not the issue, it's what type of steel and carbide. Hence, why some cheap walmart knives that run under 58 HRC are harder to sharpen than let say a 60+ HRC white#2, and a 64 HRC Blue super is easier to sharpen than a 60 HRC VG-10.

If you cut out the ceramic part of a spark plug you are left with a tool that is useful for engine mechanics to find a cylinder's compression stroke . If the metal remains of the spark plug are screwed into an engine cylinder and a balloon is attached to where the ceramic fitted and the engine crank is slowly revolved the balloon will inflate . This will show the compression stroke , but not top dead centre ; it saves removing the valve covers to check for the compression stroke . It might also act as a rough guide to compression differences between cylinders , but that might be pushing the technique a bit far , I am not too sure ! Nothing to do with knife sharpening , but we are here to learn !

Polished blade, razor sharp is ideal for hair and paper, but will not cut perfectly tomato skin. Even with a razor blade it’s hard to cut tomato skin. For tomato skin you need it bit rough, fine micro sawtooth structure, like he did it with the spark plug ceramic grind. The micro edges better penetrates that tomato skin. But yes, in general for knifes I prefer also razor sharp ones with polished blades. Works for most applications as best choice in doubt. But not ideal for tomato skin.

Contrary to what some say, it’s a cool tip. I’m sure it works and your knife is sharper than before. Maybe you’re out on a jobsite and happen to have those things but not a knife sharpener. I gatta say though, there’s a part of me that would be pretty nervous about using those tight bolts with the drill. All I could imagine was the knife finding the perfect little gap to get wedged in. However that may happen, or the chances of it happening..idk. Maybe a user error from not synching the bolts with wrenches. But a knife like that catching in a Dewalt drill on full speed… WOAAH WATCH OUT!! 🔪💅

. All three ideas are great in a pinch but if I may offer one slight improvement on the first one. I'm guessing that the 2 nuts are probably standard #2 or #3 soft metal nuts? If so, their metal is softer than all but the absolute cheapest flea market knives. I would submit that if you went to the specialty parts drawer section of Lowes in their nut and bolt aisle and pick up a couple of #5 or #8 hardened nuts, they would do a better job. You wouldn't need to go to the expense of buying a hardened bolt, (probably $2.00 or $3.00 for just one), as the knife doesn't come in contact with it at all. Personally, I have a collection of stones that range from an India oil stone, (Made in the U.S.A. of course), a hard, black Arkansas oil stone, a straight razor water stone, a ceramic butcher's steel, 5 or 6 other various stones in between that put razor edges on all of my knives plus an electric knife sharpener for those blades that are especially dull, but, like I say, your ideas are great in a pinch.

A smooth stone to hone with and a leather belt to strop after works MUCH better than the methods you show here.

All the ( know it all) key board warriors in the comment section. Not one of you would have thought about using these ideas to sharpen a knife if there was no grinders whetstones or anything else you use for sharping. He is just giving some different ideas to get a blade usable again. Good video sir just ignore the comments

The title of the video should be like this: Different ways to ruin the edge of a knife. You have covered yourself in glory friend.

Very funny and totally unrealistic. The first knife was a total piece of junk to begin with, using a drill, nuts and bolts = FAIL. The second knife was better quality, but ground down to sh@t = FAIL. The spark plug trick was almost as clever as the "age old" use a ceramic mug. Moral of the story = Buy the best knives and a good sharpener, to avoid all this silly stuff.

Very true! Investing in high-quality knives and a good sharpener is definitely key 🔪🔥.

Why buy a sharpener when you can be a DIY pro with a spark plug? 🔪🔥

Don't do any of this if you care about your knife. Maybe useful in a survival situation but that's it. Sliding the knife (like cutting) is less effective than pushing the blade towards (creating serrations) the stone. The mug could work with better technique. ❤

Sliding the knife is effective for this technique, creating serrations on the stone. The mug method with better technique can also work well 😊.

The only idea that really works here is the ceramic cup. As a professional knife sharpener myself, i like to use the Ken Onion Edition work sharp tool and knife sharpener. Or wetstones going from 240 grit all the way to 8,000 for a hair whittling sharp mirrored edge.

That's great to hear! The ceramic cup is definitely a useful tool for knife sharpening. 🔪💡

IF, I was lost in the wilderness, and stumbled across an old lawn mower, snowmobile or vehicle, I just PRAY TO FREAKING GOD it has a HACK-SAW in it or I'm SCREWED for tomato sandwiches... WAIT, I hate tomatoes.
@CreativeHacker73 ай бұрын
Let's hope you never have to resort to using a spark plug for tomato sandwiches! 🍅🔪

This is for when you can't afford a $3 knife sharpener but would rather spend $10 on spark plug. 🧠
