Hi. Im a newbie on Resolve (for iPad) and enjoy your videos a lot. I discovered that if you mark the "audio only" key on the speed editor in the cut page and add a transition (dissolve) it only puts a cross fade between the clips.

So happy the algorithm gods brought us together 😅 I’ve binge watched lots of your videos and I love your style and completely relate to being organised and in control of the workflow. I have to share a use-case where I think the smooth cut button is the BEST button on the speed editor! I edit mostly podcasts. Often clients don’t provide or want b-roll and I’ve found using smooth cut to remove filler words, coughs, etc has made my workflow faster. What would you change the button to? Thanks for the great content. 👍

Creating J/L cuts can also be done by locking tracks on the Edit page. Just lock the video track / audio track and roll or trim the other independently with the Speed Editor. A disappointing detail is, that the Speed Editor forces a transition on the locked tracks (video / audio) if the audio and video are linked (say you wanted to quickly add audio crossfades only). Only unlinking will fix this behaviour.
@CreativeVideoTips
@CreativeVideoTips 3 жыл бұрын
I had forgot to even try locking the tracks to see how it behaves. Great tip! But yeah it seems like if you want to drop audio or video only fades you kind of need to use the keyboard shortcut or mouse. Bummer on that front. (Unless unlinked which you’d need to take your hands off anyway)

Hello, first I want to thank you for your incredibly useful videos, thanks to you I decided to get my speed editor and just waiting for it to arrive. I think the smooth cut is useful for example if you are editing an interview recorded over "zoom" or "Riverside fm", I edit a lot of video podcasts for my clients and they record over this type of platforms, so there are not many camera angles or B-roll, I usually hide the "uhmm" cuts by cutting to the other person reaction or by creating a split view (PIP) and cutting to that, but sometimes when people say "uhmm" to often this technique can be to overused and quite horrible to watch so the smooth cut comes in very handy.

I have been downloading and following all your Davinci Resolve tips on the Speed Editor and Cut page. I finally got notice that mine is shiped and will be here tomorrow. I cannot wait. In the meanwhile - your tips on the Cut page has really made a difference for me. Now to take the next step. Keep up the good work and great tips. I really can follow your presentations and put them into practice. I do a lot of multi-camera work in developing presentations of how-to nature. I did upgrade to the ATEM Mini ISO and that is the cat's meow for getting synced recordings. It was worth the extra $$. Before I had to manually sync some cameras since they were just POV with no audio and others did have audio. Now with the ATEM Mini pro-ISO that is history. You may want to just do a tip using the recorded timeline and media pool that the ATEM Mini Pro ISO captures. It is a great starting point that allows me to really capitalize on the features of the CUT page since I cannot do a lot of control in real-time and have to rely on the recorded output of the ISO. Now I can do all my multi-views, trims and over-writes. This type of work was made for the Speed Editor and Cut page. Thanks for inspiring me.

Chris - dude you are the best. It's hearing stories like this that mean the world to me. It is so encouraging. I'm very excited for you finally getting your hands on the new tool. I would love to do a video about using sync'd iso'd cameras but I don't think I have access to one of those devices. Maybe I could use some of the cooking footage that blackmagic always does a demo with. Either way it sounds great and having that timecode all taken care of for you is going to save you so much extra effort and time! Cheers!

@@CreativeVideoTips The Speed Editor finally arrived after over 2 months of patiently waiting and watching your videos. The best part of using the new ATEM Mini Pro ISO as a one person effort and using cameras giving multiple angles is that sync'd project file. Ton's of work and time is saved. Now I can record all cameras and mic's and do it all in post processing using Resolve and Speed Editor. Before I had to worry about switching manually and demonstrating at the same time. I can create a test/demo project today using the ISO and send it to you on an SD card if you want.

I've just been trying out the Speed Editor with Resolve version 7.1.1 and noticed an inconsistency in how transitions can be added between the Edit page and the Cut page. Adding a transition on the Edit page now automatically slips two clips together if there is not already an overlap whereas Cut page requires both clips to overlap beforehand. This auto trim seems to happen only when using the Speed Editor add transition keys on the Edit Page, making it actually easier to use than on the Cut page!

I bought the editir keyboard and love it. I have a question about the F/TC key to enter timecode/frame count. I know about right-clicking on the number field to switch between TC & F, but every time I press the F/TC key to get to a specific location on a media pool clip via timecode, the number field switches to frame count, in other words, every time I press the F/TC key it defaults to frame count. I have right-clicked on the number field to change it back timecode display, but it seems to switch back to frame count. How can that be fixed?

Hi Keith - if you are on a PC, then I think it would be Alt + E, but for me this is set under the default Resolve Keyboard set. The command is under the menu - "trim - select nearest video edit point". When you placed the barn door transition, what would then be the quickest way to applying easing? If my clips don't have handles but I want it to automatically trim and add the transition while using the speed editor or keyboard shortcuts, what would be the best way to do so, while avoiding that prompt?
@CreativeVideoTips
@CreativeVideoTips 3 жыл бұрын
The only way I know to change the easing on a transition like barn doors would be to open the inspector to the transition tab (and mouse click) to change ease to "in & out" or whatever your taste is. After you've done this once - you can go into the edit page - right click and tell it to "create transition preset". This puts that ease into a user-saved preset. If you want to drop that on a handful of clips on the timeline just select all the clips (keyboard or mouse) right-click on your new user preset transition and tell it to "add to selected edit points and clips". It will prompt you if you don't have handles and let you know it will automatically trim for you if you let it.

At 2':50" you say DIS defaults with transition on both video and audio. Great - just what I expected. Mine only adds to either video or audio. Shft+T (alone) adds transition to both video and audio, which is annoying as it has to be on keyboard. How do I make my default Speed Editor DIS or SMTHCUT default to adding transition to both video and audio?
@CreativeVideoTips
@CreativeVideoTips 2 жыл бұрын
I'm wondering if your keyboard settings could be set differently? Go to your keyboard customization and search for "add transition". Mind is set to command/ctrol t for add transition. This is something I hadn't changed from the defaults. It could possibly also have something o do with your linked selection. Is that turned on or off by chance? Try toggling that.

@@CreativeVideoTips Thanks for those instructions. I verified KB defaults and Link Active all ok. Then by luck, doing another clean Spit and transition, it worked perfectly. I concluded my former Split was faulty as the red selection frames disappeared off the audio track as the cursor landed on the Split. Zooming into the Split I saw that my audio split was a fraction away from the video split. So the issue was my own faulty shift or roll at the split. As a novice, try as I may, I cannot fathom how to realign the two tracks, but I guess a few KZbin searches will get me another step higher on the Davinci curve. Thanks again.

Thanks for your video! A question: When I add a fade I press the "DIS" key and the speed editor automatically adds it between the two clips. I've been using it since today and I've noticed one thing: sometimes even if I press the key it doesn't add the fade! Why? when I press the button, a red signal appears briefly between the two clips as if to indicate that it cannot be inserted but if I go to the "EDIT" section, and try to insert the same fade, it inserts it without problems. Why?
@CreativeVideoTips
@CreativeVideoTips Жыл бұрын
Hi Samir - the red indicators are suppose to let you know there is not footage available to do the transition, you would need to trim the footage down to add it. Or shorten the duration of the transition. My guess is on the edit section it is either trimming your footage down automatically or is using a shorter transition. That's my best guess anyway. Hope this helps.

@@CreativeVideoTips I see, so back in the 90s, when dve-transitions where a thing, the speed editor would have been amazing the way it is. Thanks for the reply though. I just found another pretty important shortcoming / possible improvement. It's unbelievable but the speed editor is actually lacking ripple trim. It would be soooo much more efficient if they would introduce ripple trim, for example via doubble pressing trim in / trim out.
