I have the Tome of Beasts, Tome of Beasts II, and Creature Codex. I'm EXTREMELY happy with all three. They've ported Tome of Beasts (1) to Foundry VTT so you can import them in. I really hope they do the same with the other two as it makes life easier when building a world in Foundry VTT and using these monster options.

I've never played D&D but I bought that first book you reviewed for a coffee table book. On observation it gets looked at more than the other coffee table books I have and usually generates more conversation. I'm going to pick this one up as well. You do great work.

I backed it on Kickstarter. My main interest in backing this project was to have creatures for my homebrew game that my old school players don't know or can metagame. Your point at 9:00 is the reason why.

I personally found the Codex to be less impressive then the Tome, but I honestly just think that's because my campaign is currently run in a Nordic reminiscent country and the monsters in the Tome were much more fitting. That said, my campaign also has a lot of undead, and there are a few nice ones in the Codex, especially the preta hungry ghost. That was a nice fun surprise for the players.

The obvious question: Do you have some of the monsters picked out for future build projects? Are there some that just inspire your creative muse? Or one that looks like an impossible challenge? :-)

Great vid as always was just thinking that it would be cool if you hilighted 1 or 2 monsters in this sort of book that you thought were awesome to help us get a better idea of the product. Not sure if that's possible or not just thought it was an interesting idea keep up the great work and fantastic vids

Precisely the same opinion on all counts! though im only just starting to dabble with the codex its fantastic!... as for the CR rating stuff, in Tome of Beasts the DoppleRats....thats possibly the hardest creature to CR as it popcorns out of control pretty fast.

Love Black Magic Craft videos and I love non-WotC gaming material (and stuff by Kobold is always great), but this book is NOT double the size of the Monster Manual. The MM (5E) is 352 pages. This book is 416 pages. A difference of 64 pages. I'm not going to pull out the calculator on that, but ... wouldn't that make this book roughly 20 percent bigger? So.. not even a quarter bigger, let alone TWICE the size.
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 6 жыл бұрын
I wasn’t comparing page count (but I should have been). Visually this book is about twice as thick, not quite but almost. I’m talking physical thickness which turns out to be misleading vs page count....I guess the paper stock makes a big difference I didn’t consider. The kobold tomes are printed on a heavier paper which I guess can really add up over a few hundred pages.

I don't see a problem with players coming to the table with a general knowledge of the standard monsters. These things exist in the world, adventurers who survived encounters would pass on stories. Some of the knowledge might be corrupted in the ensuing game of telephone but it is entirely reasonable to assume that people who live in the world would have SOME knowledge of the creatures that inhabit it.
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial
@BlackMagicCraftOfficial 6 жыл бұрын
I don't disagree. I also don't think it's a "problem" per se, but it can become very boring for players and GM's when there are few surprises in the monsters being faced.

The CR rating issue is because WOTC messed up in the MM and underpowered the monsters. Kobolds press monsters are built with the actual CR rules so they are stronger. WOTC admitted they didn't have the CR rules done when they made the MM.

Great books, very impressive. Buy i never seen one of those who places Humanoid section and then (real)Monsters section, i think it would be more easy to handle it in that way. But it's just my personal opinion of course.
