In 1942 the RMS Nova Scotia was torpedoed and went down, in the Indian Ocean. Many were killed, by oceanic whitetips, their kill count is extremely high and unknown.

I would love for you to do a video on the Indianapolis. I love sharks, and your videos have helped me get over the fear of them that years of slanderous media and ignorance have instilled. However, the incident of the Indianapolis continues to instill fear in me in regards to the Oceanic Whitetips. I truly think that, with a detailed explanation of what happened through the perspective of a shark scientist would go a long way to explaining their alleged predatory behavior and put into context how dangerous (or not) they actually are to be in the water with.

@@SHARKBYTES The Laconia Incident 1942...most of the survivors not in the boats were taken. Also, the Royal Navy had a Cruiser sunk in 1943 out in the Atlantic parallel with Brazil, it was there Indianapolis, but I cannot find my source. Love your channel.

I think I fear this shark the most, only because it’ll eat anything and are open ocean sharks. If a boat sinks, these guys are the first predators you’ll see (and probably the last).

The big pectoral fins make them look so cute to me for some reasons. Gorgeous sharks, humanity really needs to start pulling through for them. Even if white tips have caused many humans deaths, I can say for certain that humans have caused several times more deaths of their species. I would love to hear about Indianapolis, though. I think it would be interesting to hear your opinion!

Interesting that this species is associated with pilot whales. When I lived and dived in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia back in 90s we occasionally came across pilot whales frequently exhibiting a strange behaviour of being vertical with their tails sticking out of the water. I would usually jump overboard and swim towards them trying to get some photos underwater, but never really managed to get anything decent. I'm not sure that I would have done that now had I known there may have been Oceanic White Tips lurking around.

I am both shark phobic (nightmares about them from small childhood and WAY previous to Jaws coming out) and shark-fascinated. I can't watch too much about them. As much as I'm terrified of them, I value their place in our ecosystem. Really appreciate your insightful videos.

Well, in the red sea you stand a fairly good chance of diving with oceanic whitetips as far as I know. Since I started diving I'm really intrigued by sharks and would love to dive with more species, incl the big ones. However, oceanic whitetips are the species that truly scares me. Their erratic behavior makes them so unpredictable. The line between curiosity and "let's take a nibble" seems much thinner than with other sharks.

Just completed sharkwee with them. Had a super close and beautiful encounter @ deadalus reef with a fully grown and very inquisitive male. They are very intimidating and you have to be well trained and understand on how to interact and dive with them. They are not to be messed with. Hope you get the opportunity to dive with them - they are magnificent beyond imagine (considering their behaviour also)

Yes I would be terrified of these sharks. Jacques Cousteau did say they were the most dangerous sharks in the ocean. Even more so than great whites, tiger, and bullsharks.

When I hear the name Oceanic Whitetip Sharks, I always get a bit sad, cause I've heard that prior to 1960, these sharks were prolific in the open oceans and you could go anywhere in the Pacific Ocean and come across one. These days, they have been so overfished by shark finning operations that it is extremely rare to see one. EDIT - and as soon as I posted this comment, I hear you in the video say the exact same fact! Could you do a creature feature on the Salmon Shark please, or even the Porbeagle. Love those sharks!

Growing up in Australia they were one of the species we were told to actually be wary of in the water. Which always struck me as odd, being born in the 90s, when I never saw even one of them in my entire life. Seen a couple of Bronze Whalers (would love a vid Kris 😉) and one that might have been a bull shark, although I'm not sure because I don't know if the stories of them being in and around the lower Murray River Basin and the Coorong are true, but that's about it besides dog sharks, skates and various rays. Will never forget the day I was at the beach with my grandpa and a huuuuge eagle ray went drifting past less than a metre from us, incredible creature to see. Now I'm sad that as I got older I grew scared of the ocean, it's full of so much beautiful life 😌 Edit: after some much needed googling, it appears that it would be very unlikely for it to be a bull shark, as there are no confirmed reports of them this far south, only some fishermen in a forum claiming to have seen loads of them.

Great video! Such a beautiful, graceful shark - with those pectoral fins, the white fin tip markings and the way it glides so smoothly and effortlessly through the water. Deceptively menacing though, I most definitely wouldn't want to share the water with one. Yes please, would love to see your take on the USS Indianapolis.

Awesome video and channel. Didn't knew they follow whales to locate prey. That's a sign of intelligence for sure. I have recently come across a video where an OWT came across a tiger shark. I knew the longimanus has an attitude but what astonished me is how it acted really intimidating and the much larger tiger cleared his space without second thought.

I assume you do know the Latin name for the shark, but what you may not know is that, in German, we refer to oceanic whitetips as Longimanus. They don't have a common name in German. I also find their name itself quite amusing, as it means long hands (which you likely also know). Anyway, thanks for your entertaining and educating videos. Really love the channel!

Yes - the poo thing has been documented anecdotally, but I haven't seen any full confirmation of it from a research perspective. Perhaps eating remnants of undigested squid from the whales

i know this might be a stupid question, but is it possible for a collection of embryo DNA to freeze and stuff like a lesser version of jurassic park for a species such as the oceanic white tip? Like as a "just in case" scenario because of their dramatic decline? We have seen some dramatic results in the advancement of stem cells and science in the last 20 years. Where I live, you can frequently encounter Bull Sharks. They probably bite the most humans because they swim in lagoons and fresh water rivers. I've heard of the Oceanic White tip. Scary shark, but thankfully you won't run in to them in shallows of the ocean.

Oddly, the OWT is one of those sharks I WOULDN'T fancy meeting in the wild. Not sure why! The frilled shark and the goblin shark also sit on that list! Would you do one on its reef-dwelling cousin, the whitetip reef shark, sometime? That was the first shark I ever saw - I might even have a photo of it somewhere!

First heard of this animal as an early teen reading a Jacques Cousteau book. Fascinated me. Then read Blue Meridian by Peter Matthiessen where his descriptions of this animal had me hoping to see this animal one day. Fast forward decades later and fate had me living in Kona Hawaii where I finally got to encounter one. 34 years here and I have had many encounters and I count this animal as one of the most impressive, beautiful and intimidating sharks of all. Incredible photo subject at close range. One that needs to be constantly monitored without dropping your guard.

4:50 I think being an oceanic species they're probably also being more heavily impacted by climate change and surface temperature variations than other shark species. Especially since as you said they love a good bait ball, and a lot of smaller fish species have been experiencing mass die offs in recent years as a result of surface water temperature changes and the chain effect they have on ecosystems.

As monstrous the oceanic white tip might seem to us, imagine if they were able to make a movie about us. Even with the infamous incidents like USS Indianapolis, well the crew wouldn't have been on the water if us humans weren't so keen on killing each other in war. And yes, the pilot whale fact was new to me.
