Idk if it's been said, but one thing that last guy did right was to just slowly ascend like nothing was wrong. He didn't panic, despite the pain, and probable fear. He just pointed up, and took a leisurely pace while keeping the wound covered as best he could. He knew he screwed up, but still kept it together.

I said it before but I'll say it again, would we feel sorry for a guy who climbed in a tiger cage, throwing meat around and then got attacked while ignoring the animals location as they get riled up? idk why we hold sea predators to a different standard than we do land predators.

Because attacks are still quite rare? Same can't be said for hanging out near polar or grizzly bears, wolves, and no one even sees big cats before they're killed. Not sure why you limited the list to predators, hippos and elephants in musth are incredibly dangerous. Its more that the sea is statistically safer than entering a land predators domain. I think what you said is pretty poorly thought out

I've got a rule in life that has helped me no end...... If it's dangerous I stay away from it. If it's got big sharp teeth, is stronger than I am or is poisonous or venomous, it gets a big nope from me. I guess in reply to your comment, most people with brain cells would expect to get attacked by climbing into a tiger cage, you wouldn't expect to get away with it even once, whereas you could go in the sea ten thousand times and not see a shark let alone get bitten. If you're refering to Eric, the guy who got bitten in the leg then yeah, he played a stupid game and won a silly prize.

Yeah sure, if someone climbed into the tiger cage at the zoo but that's not the scenario around shark attacks. Your example would make sense if someone climbed into a tank at Sea World but they were attacked out in the wild. It's more like comparing someone attacked by a tiger in the wild.

Eric in fact did have a spotter, but despite very clear demands from Eric that his spotter shouldn't be talked to, the filmcrew kept asking him questions which led to him being distracted and overlooking the bullshark behind Eric.

I think the Mako shark in the first video could've been motivated by curiosity. I've watched a couple of documentaries about them which established that they're extremely intelligent and very observant of their surroundings. Perhaps the shark noticed the diver then moved closer for a better look; once it saw "fins" on the man's feet it decided to see if he might be a fishlike creature. As everyone saw the shark left quickly after the bite rather than continuing the attack which made it clear that the Mako did not consider the diver as food- more of a curious annoyance in the shark's home if anything.

I was wondering the same thing. He seemed to be splashing around a lot, too, and those fins might look like fish. If the shark does associate spear fishing with fish, I mean, those fins might look like something that could be food.

The eye size on them makes mistaken identity less likely than trying a mouthful of this to see what it tastes like & check if worth finishing off.

I remember the Discovery Channel guy. It was a long time ago, when Discovery didn't suck and they used to do the shark week specials. Even back then as a kid a knew that exposing yourself in that situation is very dangerous, plus he transmitted the wrong message. He was all about situations poorly handled, and diminishing the respect people should have to wild apex predators. This is why I subscribed to your channel, you have common sense. You like sharks, you know how important they are for the ecosystem, but you know they are not pets, and just because we're humans, doesn't mean that all apex predators are harmless and recognize us as "not food". Sure, we're not part of their diet, but we can easily be food if they are hungry enough.

I think the mako was just used to spear fishing and expecting a bite to eat. I saw a short on fb the other day where the makos were going for the cameras (because of reflection), but the average person would believe they're aggressive small GWs. 😕 Love the nurse shark. Would love to see a headline, "Hungry nurse shark bites person, other nurses rush in to apply first aid." 😂

I saw the whole documentary with Eric Ritter (spelling?) when it aired on Discovery Channel. He himself says that the bite was exploratory and they stayed in the water too long making the shark curious, so I believe your analysis is correct. I would love a video about the influencers getting bitten by nurse sharks!

Excellent content as always, Kris, thanks buddy!! A couple of comments: Ritter routinely waded and swam with Bull sharks as part of his school, in the eyes of many experts the attack on him was an accident waiting to happen. He blamed everyone except himself for the attack, including Marvin and the spotter/operation owner who did a lot to save his life. I still find his work interesting though as he did prove that bull sharks will not attack people when they have food available and the water is clear. He did an interesting video clip on this with Shark Gordon, where they waded and swam with the Bull sharks. There have been a handful of attacks by Makos off Egypt. I believe in 2010 a Mako was also identified in 2 of the Sharm El Sheikh attacks, where feeding was identified as the probable cause. The sharp drop-offs off the coast means that Oceanic Whitetips and Makos are occasionally seen closer to shore there than in other locations.

if you have seen Anatomy of a shark bite, they actually did a recreation of the attack, and Eric said if he had not lifted his leg, she would have gotten him. he lifted his leg causing the sharks gill slits to shut, which cut off her breathing forcing her to release. in the docu, Anatomy of a Shark Bite, they actually used the animatronic Mako from Deep Blue Sea, as the reenactment shark. and the narrator says "after the tail swish covering the real bite cuts, its clear from our reconstruction what the shark was really trying to do, escape with ritter in order to consume him in deeper water"

Another great video Kris! I've stated my opinion of the Ritter incident before on another video (think that was on Sharks Happen though so I'll post it here.) I feel Erich Ritter's so called "experiment" here is quite simply how you well described it here: a daredevil stunt gone wrong. I recall this incident when it first happened, and I remember how later on Ritter blamed the spotter for not calling the shark out to him, the camera man for blocking his line of sight, and even Nigel Marvin for distracting him! He blamed absolutely everyone for this incident... but not himself. That is the crucial detail. This incident, without a doubt, was Ritter's fault. This was someone who foolhardily believed that he knew the behaviour of bull sharks just because he had done this waist deep wading with them for years before. He had become overconfident with them, almost believing perhaps that he understood them, or had "tamed" them. This mindset is the exact same as that from Timothy Treadwell, or Siegfried and Roy, or Ocean Ramsey, or even those KZbinrs who own pet crocodiles or other wild animals and get too close to them and proclaim to "understand" them. Its the same situation with those poor orcas in Seaworld. You could spend years reading and researching animals. You could even spend the same amount of the time experiencing them in the field in their natural habitats, observing them, getting more comfortable around them. However, like humans, not all animals are alike. Indeed, much like Travis the Chimp, or even your domesticated dog or cat, or even a human being, any living thing can revert to their animalistic instincts with a flick of a switch, and no prior research or study can prepare anyone for that. I honestly feel sorry for Nigel Marvin. After this, it took him years to consider doing another nature documentary. He was so shocked and upset by the incident. I still think it affects him. Whilst I have stated unequivocally that Simon Nellist's attack was unprovoked, I can say with absolute certainty that Ritter's attack was a provoked one, and I'd agree with you that the shark no doubt did a test bite and that was that. Having read up on bull shark attacks, it is clear that if that shark wanted to attack Ritter, the injuries sustained to him would have been far, far worse.

Since so much of discovery is staged to the pathetic reality TV extreme, having a few incidents like this is all that gives it much credibility. Certainly adds to the entertainment factor, like influencers that would have benefitted by being shaken more as infants being sampled etc.

Manni was fine other than absolutely crapping his pants!!!! I almost crapped my pants watching it. My dad, Marine Biologist, used to mess with me when we would go out fishing as a kid. He'd wait till I jumped off the boat 15 to 20 miles out and tell me, "Hey son, did you know sharks like to follow boats for food?!" I know now that he was full of it but at 12 yo I learned how to walk on water getting back into the boat. Thanks Dad..... I was lucky growing up on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I've gotten to see a lot of Marine life and a lot of sharks. They're just so majestic to watch in the water. My dad passed away some time ago but when I see sharks I think of him.

Could see the Nurse Shark one being a simple reflexive action. Since they are animals that do a lot of exploration and investigation via their mouths, rather than hands like we do. So I can see it being the same as when humans throw our hands up as a reaction to unexpected things in our face.

Jordan's attack still disturbs me to this day because I just don't believe she was attacked by three tiger sharks. They do not hunt nor attack in packs. Wasn't a starving Mako responsible for one of the Sharm el Sheik attacks a few yrs ago ? I know most were a White Tip but an emaciated Mako was caught & blamed for one attack. Loving your content - hello from Adriatic coast Croatia 🇭🇷 ❤️🦈👏

The Mako was responsible for some of the attacks, however the White Tip was responsible for the fatal attack. Both sharks were individually identified as the culprid (which is quite unusual for shark attacks as far as I know).

I think the line in the third vid of the tiger shark is attached to the cage--to me it looks like the shark is going for the cage, which makes sense b/c the vibrations of the cage hitting the water would attract it, esp. since there are usually fish in those cages...

I have read somewhere that makos use their speed to catch up with their prey and frequently attack the fins and tail to slow down fast fish before making a kill. I can’t remember where I read it (sorry) but I was looking for information on mako interactions with humans and, found that attacks were rare but swimmers’ flippers were ‘often’ targeted. i live in the south of Spain and they are not uncommon here. There are clips of interactions two to three kilometres off shore but they normally appear curious more than aggressive.

I have a DVD of that episode where Eric gets bit. Got it as a christmas present as a child and the first time I watched it I kept thinking "why are you standing around bull sharks?!" even as a child with no experience and limited knowledge of sharks knew, you don't mess with bulls.

Hey Kristian! I was wondering if there was any way to contact you? I'm filling in this book, mostly for personal reasons, as a sort of short encyclopedia of sharks, and I have this passage i'd like to send to you to make sure I'm accurate! Question. Are there underwater sounds that a scuba diver uses that may attract or cause sharks to keep a distance? Such as underwater air horns that typically vibrate loudly underwater or air tank knockers, or etc.. I know this is vague and that there are probably a million variables.

The crinkling sound of a plastic bottle has definitely been seen to attract sharks. Perhaps a loud underwater device could deter a shark that’s getting a bit too close - but not sure on any research into it specifically!

I honestly don't know how they can't identify the species from the bite wounds. Makos eat fish and have needle like teeth to do so. They're obviously different from most sharks that attack people.

Been binge watching your videos. I live on the Gold Coast Australia right near the beach. I absolutely love the ocean I’m always swimming. You mentioned Lady Musgrave island. The one and only time I’ve seen a shark was there. I was walking right on the edge of the water and the shark swam past me, not sure who was scared more, me or the shark. Managed to get some great pics though. I can’t speak for all Australians but we know that the sharks are there. We know the chances of getting attacked by one is slim. We take that chance because of our love for the ocean. There’s one thing that scares me more and that’s a rip. So many people especially the last 2 years have drowned in rips right near where I live. That’s what we take seriously. I’m not Australian born and raised, I’m English/Australian. Came here when I was 15. Loving your videos

I've been reading articles about great white sharks for a bit and then I stumbled upon an article saying that a 11.4 foot (3.5 meter) great white shark survived an attack from Port and Starboard. The shark in the picture actually has rake marks which could be Orcas. So I've been wondering, how could the great white shark got away from them. The article mentions that Port and Starboard could still be perfecting their technique or that any predator could fail but I doubt this since they started their killing spree in 2017 so they would have 5 years to perfect their technique. I would really like to know what you think about this. I would send a link but KZbin deletes comments with links

I don't think a white shark could have escaped unless there was some interference from the people....and if that was the case, I would not want to earn bad points from Port and Starboard.... The shark was dead meat unless P&S decided not to eat the liver and let the shark live, or there was influence from people.

@@jritechnology I don't think there could have been human interference, no one has actually seen Port and Starboard kill a great white and if they did, someone would have recorded it already or spoken up about it already. I also don't really see Port and Starboard passing up an opportunity like that. the liver is big and fatty so passing up an opportunity like that wouldn't be smart on their end.

While I haven't read the report yet, I did see pics of it a few days ago and man that's crazy. I just can't stop think about how the shark was able to get out of that situation

Think about how many predation events fail. Most large predators fail more often than succeed. I think it's easy to believe the two orca just failed to get that particular shark. For all we know, since no one has witnessed the predation events, they could fail 20-40% of the time and we would have no way of knowing.

I recall seeing the documentary that had Eric and that bullshark bite. Eric said the shark was trying to take him out to deeper water, and sugested it may have done that to perhaps consume him (or at least part of him).

How often do you get in the water with sharks from a professional (as opposed to leisure) perspective? Is it a big part of the job, or just at need during primary research?

Getting in the water with sharks (from a professional stand point) is actually very rare. There's lots of work done from along the side of boats, but actual in water research is not that common. I wish it was more common, although thats where the leisure side comes in!

The influencer that got bit by the nurse shark handled it really well all things considered. He didn’t rip his hand away immediately and calmly swam up. Stupid spot to put yourself, but I think his hand wasn’t as shredded as it should have been because he took it slow and waited for the shark to release
