CLIP DESCRIPTION:
David (Richard Carlson) and Mark (Richard Denning) manage to capture the Creature, but not before it kills again.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Universal Pictures introduced audiences to yet another classic movie monster with this superbly crafted film, originally presented in 3-D. The story involves the members of a fossil-hunting expedition down a dark tributary of the mist-shrouded Amazon, where they enter the domain of a prehistoric, amphibious "Gill Man" -- possibly the last of a species of fanged, clawed humanoids who may have evolved entirely underwater. Tranquilized, captured, and brought aboard, the creature still manages to revive and escape -- slaughtering several members of the team -- and abducts their sole female member (Julie Adams), spiriting her off to his mist-shrouded lair. This sparks the surviving crewmen to action -- particularly those who fancy carrying the girl off themselves. Director Jack Arnold makes excellent use of the tropical location, employing heavy mists and eerie jungle noises to create an atmosphere of nearly constant menace. The film's most effective element is certainly the monster itself, with his pulsating gills and fearsome webbed talons. The creature was played on land by stuntman Ben Chapman and underwater by champion swimmer Ricou Browning -- who was forced to hold his breath during long takes because the suit did not allow room for scuba gear. The end result was certainly worth the effort, proven in the famous scene where the Gill Man swims effortlessly beneath his female quarry in an eerie ballet -- a scene echoed much later by Steven Spielberg in the opening of Jaws.

Whoever played the monster in this did a terrific job making him remain fish-like while being on land. I wonder how he was able to get the mouth of the suit to open and close to make it look like he's breathing with his mouth and his gills? They must have constructed the costume in a way that made it so that the actor's movements wouldn't be so limited, as this was a common problem that actors back then came across if they had to wear a suit to portray a monster.
@JonesyJustJonesy

They must have molded it to his jaw line to have the mouth and gills move. Like if the actor opens his jaw, the costume will move aswell. Pretty damn nifty......

0:21 people used to talk about how every time Darth Vader came into a room a musical number HAD to come in because his presence mattered. The Creature presence mattered so much and the music in this filmed shows Also, if you pay attention, you can clearly see the Creature gasping for air. It’s so committed to mating he risks staying out of water too long and suffocating. A weakness I didn’t expect him to have at first, but he’s a fish man, and not an amphibian which was suggested in Clip 2/10 so it makes total sense.

Trivia. Note how when the guy runs at the Creature with the machete you see around 0:51-0:52 the Creature reaches down for the guys leg. That’s because originally the idea was the Creature was gonna pick up the guy and hurl the guy at the camera which they thought would look neat when this film played in 3D. However they tried the scene twice and both times the wire the actor was attached to for the stunt snapped and the idea was scrapped in favor of the Gill Man simply strangling the guy.

I always felt sorry for the Gill Man. He was from a race that were men before humans.

Having just watched it I think it's an interesting science fiction horror that uses a light contrast to show the natural landscape in which the plot is set on the evolutionary speculation of prehistoric creatures surviving into the modern day based on the protagonists vast archeological knowledge of evolutionary past and the films speculated plot of hybrid ocean creatures speculating even beyond the planet. Set in the depth of the ocean and rural waterways where dramatic aspects are heightened through dramatic music, zooming into characters faces and unbalanced camera angles.
