Creature from the Black Lagoon is my favorite Universal Monster movie. Unlike other Universal Monsters, the Gill-Man is a natural being, not a supernatural or man-made being. The movie is creepy and scares me now more than when I was a kid watching it. It's a well-made movie with good acting. The Gill-Man's design is very cool and original. He's intimidating as a character while also being sympathetic (much like Frankenstein's Monster or the Wolfman). I enjoy Revenge of the Creature. I like it more than a lot of other people do but I still think it is still very flawed. The movie is reminiscent of King Kong movies. The Creature Walks Among Us was boring and didn't have a lot going on. I really like the tragic ending with the Gill-Man looking out at the sea, knowing that he can never live in his natural home again. Aside from that, I don't like it. Great Review as well.

MY explanation for the question that you pose at 9:49 is this .. . he was imprisoned, by his captors, in what looked like a CAGE right? . ..right. And they probably FED him what was normally fed to ANIMALS that had also been kept in that cage, and sometimes they feed captive animals food laced with STEROIDS. As for 5:57, I just figure that he had a kind of MENTAL FIX on the women with whom he was infatuated.

I've now watched the first one in the series. Those underwater scenes are very impressive, and the creature is a marvellous creation. They're the two things that stood out. The story itself is adequately functional but it really is all about the creature. I like how the creature is presented from different angles ~ at times it comes across as almost human and we're clearly led to sympathize with it, sometimes it appears funny and almost cute (as if we're watching a comedy), and other times it's truly menacing. The direction cleverly switches between these moods depending on how the creature is meant to be perceived in any given scene. In fact, the creature is arguably the most well-rounded character in the story. As for the design, I particularly like the way the mouth moves when it's regaining its air supply, and those fixed eyes really work in its favour during the menacing scenes. I was quite surprised at just how edgy everything gets towards the end when they really ramp up the terror (I'm not at all surprised this gave you nightmares when you were young). The creature is ultimately the monster of the story, but I came away feeling that Man is the real monster in this. There's a nice little touch early on when the captain of the boat joyously scares the crocodiles away by blowing his horn (simply for fun). That single moment set the underlying narrative. Incidentally, I watched this with two other movies in a fun-packed movie night in (with plenty of snacks and during a glorious thunderstorm). The second movie was a sci-fi mystery called "The Earth Dies Screaming" (1964), which I'd never heard of before. That one starts off very much like Village of the Dammed/ The Midwich Cuckoos, then quickly develops into its own story. It's only an hour long and a lot of fun. The last feature of the night was the classic The Thing From Another World.

Thanks for sharing those great observations on Creature! It sounds like you had an awesome evening. Summer thunderstorms plus old scary movies and yummy treats! And while I don't think I'm familiar with The Earth Dies Screaming (what a title) either, I know you can never go wrong with The Thing from Another World. Nice!
@Ruby_Kang3 жыл бұрын
@@Weiselberry The Earth Dies Screaming turned out to be a little gem. I chose it on the title alone (I couldn't resist with a title like that). It's a low budget production but highly effective, set in a small English village. I should warn you, if you ever decide to check it out I strongly recommend against watching the trailer. It's full of spoilers revealing all the secrets (totally ruining the mystery) and it even shows the plot resolution. Luckily I didn't see that until after watching the feature first. I went in completely blind, not knowing what to expect, and it was a joy. I agree about The Thing From Another World. From beginning to end it's absolutely perfect in its execution. One of my favourite old movies. I've had a great time over the past few weeks watching all these classic B+W sci-fi/fantasy movies (encouraged by your reviews). Out of the ones that I hadn't seen before "I Married a Monster From Outer Space" was the one I enjoyed the most. I'm in the mood for trying out some classic ghost/haunted house stories from the 1940s next. And hopefully more thunderstorms are on their way :)

One of the first, if not the first, creatures that is shown as being graceful and sympathetic. The Creature is just hanging out in his environment when a bunch of people invade his domain. When I was little, I'd heard all about the original film and seen pictures of the Creature, but I never actually saw the movie until I was at least 14-15 years old. I would have watched it sooner, but it just never happened to be on TV. Monsters like this never gave me nightmares. Actually, the only things that bothered me when I was little were dead things (mummies, skeletons, petrified bodies) coming back to life. Even ones that didn't come back to life bothered me. Seeing photos of actual mummies would keep me awake at night. That and Bigfoot type creatures. The effects look downright silly now, but several episodes of the show Kolchak: The Night Stalker really freaked me out when I was young. In fact, they still gave me the creeps, even when I watched them in the house alone as a teenager. If you haven't seen the show, I highly recommend it. Just keep in mind that the effects were done on a 1970s TV budget. Also check out the two TV movies that preceded it; The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler, 1972 and 1973 respectively.

Thank you so much for the 'Creature' trilogy vlog. In hindsight I believe this trilogy series of movies had longer term potential for more stories/films in the vein of the Planet of the Apes. Better done in-colour with bigger budgets and at least B-list actors. The 'Creature' is an enduring 'Universal' monster franchise even into the 21st century. It needs a definite reboot, without too much CGI with an open-ended storyline to potential sequels /prequels for 2022.

The Creature From Black Lagoon is the last of the Classic Universal Monsters , but also the first in the new era of the Science Fiction - Horror movies that replaced the gothic themed movies of 30's and 40's ( which wouldn't return until the Hammer era). Unlike the other Monsters used by Universal previous decades the Creature was not supernatural or created in some mad scientist's lab , the Creature was a crytid ( like Bigfoot , the Yeti and the Loch Ness Monster ) ; living on the outer edges of the world which it can never be a part of. I suspect that the CFTBL can trace its origin back to the novella by HP Lovecraft Shadow Over Innsmit ( which I did in one of my short stories , MONSTER NEWS THE BOOK ). A side note , Arnold used the same music score in his next movie Tarantula ( why waste money by writing a new one). A second side note. In 1953 ( one year before the film came out ) a lone motorist in California report that scalely humanoid creature at this car, leaving behind deep claw marks. Is The Creature really fiction? And do such beings truly live among us ?

good point....I hadn't thought of that
@thephotoplayer5 жыл бұрын
I think you nailed all the main points here, and while all three films are super entertaining, the third one is kind of the "dark horse" of the trilogy. I do think the lurid soap opera-ey feel of the last film almost skips the film over into a Douglas Sirk-y soap opera monster film, with Creech taking the backseat to the Jeff Morrow/Leigh Snowden/Rex Reason love triangle in the film. Which brings me to my next point as I would love to see your take on 1955's THIS ISLAND EARTH, also starring Jeff Morrrow and Rex Reason.

if you haven't seen them, they are really fun in 3D (only the first two are in 3D). the underwater 3D is really good, and i was able to see the first one in 3D in a theater, and then the first two as 3D dvds on my tv. I also thought the female scientists are very progressive portrayals for the time, especially in the second one.

If you had to keep Creature Walks Among Us the same but change one thing, it would be the ending. Right before we fade to black, cut to a shot of the back of Gillman's head, and show 2 or 3 tiny slits growing there, highly implying that soon his gills will grow back and he can return to the ocean. Instead of it having a tragic ending for Gillman, give him a more hopeful one. Seriously. That's all it would take to fix part 3.

The set only has only the first appearance of each monster (with the exception of The Bride of Frankenstein, which has the Frankenstein monster along with his bride). Since I have the collection, I’ve only seen the Creature from the Black Lagoon. I think that the creature from the black lagoon is a perfect film. I think, a remake needs to be done but it has to be a “predator” like movie. Like there’s a group of military men hunting down former WW2 nazi war criminals but they stumble upon this untouched lagoon that is home to Gilman. Plot twist- the main character knew that the Gilman was there because the creature had rescued him after a previous mission . He wants to capture Gilman to make money by (selling him to an aquarium) a hint to the second film.

@@RSEFX "It Came From Outer Space"(1953) and "Invasion of The Body Snatchers"(1956 ) are my all-time favorite SF movies with a message. The 1st is against xenophobia. The 2nd is a warning about the peril of losing what makes us human. Before seeing them, my top favorite was "Enemy From Space"(Quatermass II, 1957). At the time I adopted the name for the e-mail, I had completely forgotten the name of the likable astronomer character played by the equally likable Richard Carlson. I intended the name as a gag, for it's a character in a series of humorous spy novels of the late 60s to early 70s by Ted Mark, ''The Man From O.R.G.Y."(OrganisationForTheRationalGuidanceOfYouth) So, that sets the tone. Charles Putnam is not the hero, just the bumbling boss (like "Chief" in the 1966 TV series ''Get Smart") of the hero Steve Victor. Both are the sole personel of the agency that is so secret that it has no fixed address ! The spying side however is surprisingly good, and shows the author' accurate documentation, as for instance the data on the gang war in Manila Bay, in the episode ''My Son, The Double Agent"(one of the craziest where Steve has to accomplish his mission pants-less for the whole time !) I am surprised that the books have never been adapted as a good TV series. Unfortunately the author lent his talent to a complete fiasco of a vulgar exploitation movie with the same title (1970) That ended the screenwriter career of Ted Mark. And ''Charles Putnam'' wasn't even in it ! The books are much better, but some sides of the stories are not exactly for a nice young lady like you. Looking forward to your next reviews. By the way, why not one on ICFOS, IOTBS and other excellent 50s SF classics like ''Tarantula'', ''Attack Of The 50-foot Woman", and "The Day The World Ended" ? I would really enjoy them !

As usual, the original Creature From The Black Lagoon was a classic but the 2 follow-ups were disappointing. The original had a great cast. Revenge Of The Creature was OK but not as good. Outside of John Agar as the star actor the rest of the cast was weak the plot kind of lame. By the way, I got to play golf with John Agar back in the late 80's with in son Martin at Rip Hondo Golf Course in Downey, Ca. right after he played in "Miracle Mile" which, I think, was his last movie. The 3rd in the Creature trilogy was pretty stupid. It was very scary nor horror-filled. I saw all 3 of these horror movies at our local kiddie matinee at the Garmar Theater in Montebello, Ca. in the late 50's. We threw a few empty popcorn boxes at the screen during "The Creature Walks Among Us" showing our displeasure, as by then, we were Sci-Fi, monster and horror film "EXPERTS!"

Fun fact: The script for the movie "Anaconda" was repurposed from an unmade Black Lagoon re-make.

If they ever remake the Creature from the Black Lagoon Blumhouse had better stay away!

I love The Creature Walks Among Us. His gills burn off and he gets lungs and gets fat and bald and wears bad clothes. In other words he turns HUMAN!

For me my favourite B-movies are Them! It Came From Outer Space, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers- between them they pretty much cover all the traditional B movie tropes, paranoia, fears and characters of the era you could want. Have you seen any of those films? It would be interesting to hear your take on any or all of them.

I've only seen a couple scenes in It Came from Outer Space, but I've seen both Them! and Invasion of the Body Snatchers several times. They're definitely classics of the genre, and top of the class in their sub-genres (if you consider "giant bugs" a sub-genre, which I do). Are they considered B-movies? I think of B-movies as much more campy and lower-budget (like Plan 9 from Outer Space and The Giant Claw). I enjoy '50s scifi/horror/monster films, so maybe I'll do some more videos on them in the future.

I do tend to use 'B-movie' to cover as rather wide range of films, rather than its more literal meaning of the second film on a bill. I tend to think of any film between the early forties and late fifties than features a creature/fantastical setting/idea plus social commentary of some sort, plus rather traditional character types- handsome hero, scientist, female doctor/scientist/daughter of scientist who is the love interest (though occasionally actually more), obviously this doesn't account for placing on the bill or budget (heck Forbidden Planet would fall into my b-movie criteria).

Interesting. I think for myself I throw the term around too subjectively, like if a movie looks well-made and is widely considered to be good, and (here's the worst subjective part) if I liked it, than to me it's not a B-movie, while something else that has a cast of relative unknowns, looks cheap, and is widely considered a bad movie (even it it's in so-bad-it's-good territory), I mentally categorize as a B-movie, without actually considering whether or not it fits the literal definition of the term. That's a bad habit I need to get away from.

The "Revenge of the Creature" sequel seemed like a rip-off of the "King Kong" story (an exotic specimen is captured and brought to the USA, where it breaks its shackles and chases a blonde around). I never saw the third film, but you say it's a lot like "Frankenstein." Maybe we're lucky they never got around to filming a script with a blood sucking "Dracula" sort of creature.
@Weiselberry7 жыл бұрын
I hadn't thought of that, but you're right, in its basic storyline it is similar to King Kong. Yikes, that sounds like an awful combination! As much nonsensical fun as I find the monster mash movies of the '40s to be, I think it very fortunate the Gill-Man came along too late to be thrown into the mix.

Revenge of the Creature was a great MST3K episode. Since it was the first episode of season 8, it introduced Bobo, Peanut, Crow's new voice, and the return of Pearl. The mocking of John Agar and the jokes made during the brief cameo by Clint Eastwood were perfect.

I didn't say it was risque. I'm saying if you watch the three movies in a row all those (mostly male) bare legs running/swimming around can get overwhelming.

I grew up watching the classic Universal Studio monsters. And, I still love and enjoy watching them all 50+ years later. But, over the years, my thoughts about these monsters have all changed in one way or another. The Gillman is one that has changed the most. As a kid of 4 or 5, I enjoyed watching the "Creature" trilogy, even though he scared the crap out of me. Now, I've come to have deep sympathy for him. Because, he had survived from prehistoric days till man began invading his home & interfering with his life. The Gillman WAS NOT a monster! He was merely a victim of the REAL monsters...MAN! All he wanted was to be left alone, but that was impossible because they deemed him a dangerous killing machine, and just had to be destroyed. Why didn't they leave him alone, and sail further down river, and rape the local monkeys like everyone else was doing? This kind of crap is why I always what to punch all these jackasses in the face..... .....with a Louisville Slugger..... ..........TO THE FOREHEAD!

The 3rd movie is a moral tale. The creature is more human than some humans in the story.
@AJRussortm6 жыл бұрын
very good review....however, you missed the point of the trilogy... because of your subjectivity you judge the films from the perspective of what you like about each film rather than looking at the entire trilogy as a whole....a story depicting the evolution of Mankind

I REALLY fuckin hate Walks Among Us, mainly because it's just unbearable how this poor woman can't catch a break. For real, the captain sexually harasses and later assaults her, and her husband STILL blames her. Makes my blood boil!
