I was very lucky. On my 18th birthday I went to the Dean's office in high school to sign up for the draft. He walked me out of his office and showed me a letter on the bulletin board. It said anyone born after April first of that year, no longer had to sign up for the draft. My birthday was April 15.....

As a Vietnam Vet, this is one of the best (and accurate) protest songs. The Senators & Rich people sons get into the National Guard guaranteeing they would not be sent to Nam. The Big Military Brass's sons would get cushy stateside duty. The ONLY action the National Guard saw was killing innocent students at Kent State. Needless to say - I wasn't a "Fortunate Son!"

When they brought the POWs back, I would watch every new items I could. I wrote the date of the announcement when the Vietnam "Conflict" was over in the bottom of a drawer in my chest of drawers. I would always watch the evening news, though I was barely 13 and keep a watch for the nightly report of : MIAs, KIAs, Wounded, and presumed captured. I guess it was the way I mourned for our guys. Keeping vigilant. It did affect me and made a mark on my soul, even though I was a little girl.

@@ThaddMcNamara we've talked about it before, that's probably why he recognized it. This world he's growing up into sure is something. But it's always been that way. I try to show that to him. He had some context for the black panther party scene in the movie since he did a project about Muhammad Ali last year and learned about his stance on the war. We try to imagine what it was like growing up when his grandparents were kids, when the draft was around, when politicians could be openly racist as part of their platform. When the country was sharply divided along cultural lines. Some things have changed, some not as much as it seems.

This song brings back so many painful memories of the Vietnam War. During the sixties I was too young to be drafted, but I volunteered to go in the seventies. I wore my hair long as you see in the picture, but I joined the military and volunteered for Vietnam. I saw too many young men from my neighborhood in the sixties go off to war only to return as angry young men or not at all. I participated in many anti-war protests in the sixties but in the seventies I joined the military and found myself in Vietnam shorty thereafter. Kind of ironic that I was a hippie joining the very organization that I protested against, but I wanted to fully understand the basis of my protest and I didn't feel right that I was safe back home when I saw too many of my friends who were drafted come back to an America that didn't understand them, or they didn't come home at all. Vietnam was hell on earth. This song helped me overcome my fears and I channeled my anger to those evil men who talk a big talk but whimper when they are called out about their cowardice. Jamel, I applaud your desire to know more about not only the nature of the songs you react to, but the true meaning behind the artists and what they tried to convey. I have watched you react to RATM, another one of my favorite bands, and I love your reactions to the political messages they express. Keep up the good work in exploring the world around us through music.

They played this in the Vietnam War documentary HBOs Letters Home from Vietnam...really good documentary. They picked a handful of celebrities to read actual letters written by Soldiers, Marine's, Sailors, and Airmen who were fighting in Vietnam. They read the letters as the documentary played. This song played during one of many scenes showing Marine's and Soldiers fighting in vicious battles with the North Vietnamese.
