Some of his questions were strange. Asking how many countries a specific song was a hit in? Who would know that off the top of their head? And he seemed obsessed with why they weren't willing to branch out into some other type of music other than rock. even after the question had been answered he revisited it. But it was great seeing them just before things disintegrated between them.

I still remember buying Mardis Gras, which is referenced here but had not been named yet. I was so excited that my favorite band finally put out a new album. But I remember being completely bummed out when I played it. Yes, it sold well because people like me would buy any album they released without hearing it. There were a few good ones such as "Someday Never Comes", but overall it was a huge disappointment. I remember feeling cheated by them.
@morebenxyz4262
@morebenxyz4262 Жыл бұрын
If I’m correct, Mardi Gras saw the other members produce, write and sing their own material on the album. All the other albums previously were practically single-handedly made by John. Hence, what some may have perceived as a change in quality from the previous works. Bayou Country and Creedence Clearwater Revival, the bands first two albums, are my personal favourites
@frogger1952
@frogger1952 9 ай бұрын
Mardi Gras..aka Fogerty's Revenge was a huge disappointment. Basically, John got sick of the others wanting input so, out of spite, he said everyone would write and sing equally. Stu or Doug can only play their instruments and the resulting album speaks for itself. Someday Never Comes and Sweet Hitchhiker were the only decent songs and both were written by John.

I don’t think they ever did that song live or on a TV show, if they even did a TV show appearance in 1972. They did do Tearin Up The Country live on the tour after Mardi Gras released though. Anyways, any footage of the trio version of CCR is sought after (at least in my opinion).

The only other "new" song added to 1972 shows was "Brown Eyed Handsome Man", but I think that was the US leg of the tour. There's a bootleg on KZbin from a Colorado show. And it's a killer version.
@rarerockk

@@ChriTur Years ago it was around as "unknown venue", later as "Denver" which would be the very last Gig by them, if so. Could be the knew it was a special gig so they added this one and JCF played an improvised banjo instrumental. They "saved" a bit time with playing a few tracks as medleys that they never played as a medley on other tours (bad moon rising, proud mary). It would be good to know if they added these banjo tracks (thats the main reason why Brown Eyed Handsome Man sounds crazy good) on the whole US leg of the 72 tour.

I don't know, there's tension underneath it all. Stu has a hysterical laugh at 6:22 when John's saying who wrote which song. I think perhaps they'd agreed to talk about the album as a collective effort, and Stu was probably thinking "here's John taking the credit again".
@kirbygene

From what I've read about them, they were still putting on a brave face about this time. John wasn't happy with the shared songwriting on what would become Mardis Gras. But once Mardis Gras was panned by most (not all) critics and was a relative failure when compared to their other efforts, that's when it seemed to really go badly.

A lot of subtle stabs between them. 3:26: "I don't have any great ambitions to write a standard, like 'I Left My Heart in Brisbane' or something." To Doug: "Did you catch that?" I think John was implying Doug was being unfaithful on the tour. Not cool.

John Fogerty is CCR. Listen to his self titled album and Hoodoo album. Sounds exactly the same. The band members thought they didn't ever satisfy John. His reply was , if I wasn't satisfied we would have never recorded 1 song. This I believe and I understand that it really drove them to break up. Something simple as doubt. Horrible

@@ptownscribe1254 I did read is autobiography and that's exactly how he comes across. So many tend to take John's side because they conflate the beautiful music he produced with his personality. I was at a recent concert and when he sings "Down on the Corner", he STILL eliminates the lyrics that reference the other CCR bandmates...including his own brother!!! You would think that someone in their 70's, with limited time remaining, would find it within himself to reconcile with Doug and Stu. But, not to be.
