The fact that Voice Play (along with Home Free) aren’t worldwide household names is a crime to me. Very different groups but both are amazing and always serve the song, not individual egos. Wonderful. Each individual member here is a gem and they prove once again that their guest singer lineup is impeccable.

@@kaperejr.9120 I listened to that version, and it seems like Eli based his arrangement on theirs. And I believe VP have perfected their arrangement. SSC’s version is good, but only one main singer sings the melody, whereas VP utilises all their singers and that’s what elevates this arrangement for me. If I hadn’t heard VP’s version first I would have agreed that SSC’s version was one of the better covers though :)

Eli. You’ve done phenomenal work! Having Cesar as the “actor” for this one, hits you in that spot. Once, he utters “cry”, I was TEAR CITY. He put so much emotion into his performance, but to the arrangement requirements. I had to familiarize myself with the original, and as I was, I said to myself, “I swear, if Geoff says the “I want a perfect body line, I’ll throw my phone.” Welp. My phone flew. Geoff. WHHY? Stop it. And Cesar. My god. Just, all of you. You creeps are who make me love you all the more! Thanks for showing us a bit more vulnerability. In a truly beautiful way!

Cesar made a perfect representation of how I’ve always thought of this song. I first heard it as a young teen struggling with mental health issues & an eating disorder. I wanted control. I wanted to not be so different & broken. At 24, I learned that my eating disorder had a near fatal physical root cause & had also finally started to get real help for my mental health issues. I’ll be 42 next month & this broke me. I sobbed through this. The vulnerability you guys displayed & how much of yourselves you each put into the performance was validating & stunning. I felt heard. This is my ultimate version of this song. I love it more than the original & the arrangement just hits my heart the right way. Thank you.

Everybody is commenting on the arrangement. Don't get me wrong the arrangement is amazing and sent shivers down my spine for sure. But can we please talk about the videography!?! This has got to be one of the best music videos I have seen in recent years. I know it's dark and that makes transitions a lot less technical but everything is just flawless. The lighting, all the moving shots. The transitions literally blend seamlessly together, specially in the mirror shots. Honestly a work of art all around!

Absolutely amazing. I wanted to let you guys know something. I just spent 4 days in the hospital due to blood clots in my lungs. I had to have a procedure where I lay flat on my back, wide awake, and they use a scope to remove the clots from my lungs. It was extremely painful because I have a bad back. I couldn't stop crying (41m). They offered to play some music if I wanted and without hesitation I had them start playing your music. Not only did it finally help me to relax, but I think you might have gotten a few new fans from it. Thank you for all that you do. It's so more than just music.

Agreed. With earlier covers of this song, it's always felt ambiguous as to whether or not the narrator is actually saying these words out loud to the object of their attraction, or merely thinking the words to/about themselves. For someone to say these words out loud *would* be creepy and emotionally manipulative -- basically bullying someone into pretending affection, This arrangement, even without the staging with the mirrors (though the mirrors definitely help) makes it clear that the song is internal, and thus vulnerable and poignant. I think it comes through in the harmonies of overlapping text in the background vocals before the soloist's line -- very like the jumble of thoughts in our heads before we articulate them to ourselves.
@joyfulyes
@joyfulyes Жыл бұрын
@@CapriUniyes, yes, YES. I was actually nervous about this cover before I watched it, because I have tended to interpret Creep as an emotionally manipulative, "incel" song and I thought, surely not, surely VoicePlay have more insight than that. Turns out, I need not have worried. They have the insight, and have turned this into an introspective song that genuinely moves me to feel empathy for the protagonist - with no manipulation. Well, and it also helps that I know and adore VoicePlay already, I admit. And I shouldn't have doubted them.

This song just finished crushing my heart because that’s exactly what i felt from them, and what i feel about myself.. all of those things are so truly part of me, and it brokes my heart cause it gives me that depression that geoff’s showing, that hopeless feeling i got from cesar, the need to feel like somehow i am someone worthy that eli was representing and.. especially and MOST PAINFULLY .. the desperation and agony from Anthony’s voice and body language. I look in the mirror to “talk to myself” but i can reach my eyes because all of the pain and disappointment and feeling unnecessary hits me so hard. I cried so much, and still do when i listen to this, because i think that this is the first time I aloud myself to let all of this feelings go for a moment. I cried, i screamed, i panicked (my dogs did it too, poor babys), but then i felt free for a while. I felt understood for the very first time in almost 31 years. And about the 3 ou 4 time I listened to this i realized more and more about facing your fears, look to yourself, be true to yourself. Fight for the especial one you want to (and know you can) be. This song for me, in their version, is more about facing all those demons they represented in the video.. its like “look at me, i’m here. Face me, fight me, join me or simply hear me” than someone that feels not especial and out of place like the original version gives us. This masterpiece changed the whole game. Changed the perception, the meaning, and quite gives you a little hope in the end because they very efficiently shows us that we are not alone, we do belong somewhere, and we all can be especial.. we all are, in our own way.

Anthony, your voice is such a perfect fit for this song, and it's always a huge bonus to have you join. Geoff's line "I want a perfect body" reminds me of his body image issues in "I Love Me." Is this still a problem? Gosh, I wanna give him a hug and let him know, he got his wish. Perfect body, perfect hair, perfect voice, and a perfect soul. And Cesar... oh my gosh, Cesar! You dropped the sass and cranked up the anguish, pouring your pain into those words. I hope y'all invested in Kleenex because you just made everyone sob beautiful tears. As someone who struggled with finding where I fit in for nearly my whole life, this song hits me in the soul. You guys perfectly captured how I feel with this song. The feeling of being alone and feeling like you’re a freak because you just can’t find anywhere else to go. It’s painful, but you need to know that you’re not weird or a freak. You’re special. I’ve found my place in theater and I am now happy with friends and a new life. This song reminded me that for everyone struggling with the same problem, it’s not permanent. You will find your people and you will find your place. Eli, well done with this arrangement. I’ve always wanted to see you arrange a song and take lead, and now, I’m complete (I might have missed it if you ever had so I apologize) Anthony, I want you as a permanent member of VoicePlay. You’re voice is beautiful and exactly what VoicePlay has been attempting to find for awhile: an amazing tenor. Please please please always keep singing. Ceaser, you fabulous man, your voice is like butter and you always put so much emotion into these videos. It’s truly incredible. Geoff, my idol, I strive to get my voice to your level of subterranean bass and rock tenor combo. You’ve been an inspiration for me to sing and take lessons to hopefully be like you (but I’ll never have your beautiful hair) Layne, I feel like people under appreciate you in this group. Without you, there would be no incredible vocal percussion. Without you, so many of your songs wouldn’t be arranged like you arranged them. Without you, VoicePlay wouldn’t be complete. You have a great voice, amazing talent, and you make the heart of VoicePlay. You guys are truly my favorite singers ever, and I love you all. I cannot wait to see what it next.

Wow. Eli did such a phenomenal job on the arrangement for this. And Cesar, your voice is just perfect for this song, and Anthony killed it too. I love the voiceplay twist that was put on this, it always amazes me how they switch up songs we are all familiar with and make them so different 💜

Yes, somehow they put their own character into songs, while still serving the song as someone put it. For example... It was kind of a given that VoicePlay removed the profanity from "you're so fvcking special" - and this is ironic for me - because I have a seriously potty mouth and I say "fvck" a lot. But for me this change (and the mirrors and some other things) made the song so I could actually hear and receive the deep pain in it, rather than feeling smacked by the raw frustration and resentment Radiohead allows to overshadow it. Sometimes a cover is truer to the original than the original. I also feel that way about John Denver's cover of Kristofferson's "Casey's Last Ride."

I know we’re mostly here for the audio, it I want to add about the visuals. VP is awesome with the visuals as well. Not just we’re the solos in the mirror a great metaphor for introspection, but the muted color and black background was great symbolically of that introspection and depression, but the black harkened back to Radiohead’s video. Especially in the way the colored lights then blasted when everything got more ‘rock’, mimicking Radiohead’s lights during the distorted guitar runs, even to the point of blazing white among the color, where we could barely see the guys. And the transition back to Cesar’s solo (from group to alone) was masterfully done camera work! And most importantly, the acting by everyone. I’m hard pressed to call it acting, as it came across as brutality honest and raw. But I really hope none of you actually feel all the hurt and pain you expressed. From Cesar’s introspection through Anthony’s painful admission, past Layne’s expressive face of despair and Geoff’s almost detached depression into Eli’s yell to be ‘seen’. All leading up to the ‘wailing’ and back to introspection by Cesar. Ya’ll, this was amazing - and not just your voices! Exceptional!!!!

The last thing you said about how each one of them were feeling… you just finished crushing my heart because that’s exactly what i felt from them, and what i feel about myself.. all of those things are so truly part of me, and it brokes my heart cause it gives me that depression that geoff’s showing, that hopeless feeling i got from cesar, the need to feel like somehow i am someone worthy that eli was representing and.. especially and MOST PAINFULLY .. the desperation and agony from Anthony’s voice and body language.

Holy catfish, Eli - this arrangement is amazing. *stands on chair and applauds* That last transition in the video, going from the whole group to Cesar back into the mirror blew my mind. 🤯 GOSH I love listening closely to all the positively delicious chords you chose to propel this song along. A couple of noteworthy things to me are that you seem to love an add2 chord just as much as I do, Eli - they are gorgeous and ethereal and peppered throughout this arrangement (0:53, 2:33, 3:16) and bring a l'il tear to my eye with each one. Also, the main chord progression of the original is G-B-C-Cm but a couple of times, you’ve chosen to go to Eb major instead of that Cm (0:45, 1:09, 3:11) - both chords contain that Eb but modulating up to an actual Eb major chord instead is just an extra layer of yumminess, and my ears are enjoying this feast very much. (I don't know if the original does this Eb substitution for Cm *(ETA the original does not)*, or if this was just your decision, Eli, but either way, it really made me sit up and say, "ooh!" with a delighted look on my face.) There are also a couple of unexpected B minor chords where one is expecting B major, 1:19 as the background vocals hit a D natural, and at 3:30 is a rich, dense Bm7 chord but I've rambled on enough about chords here... Okay, I'm sorry, one more thing - there's a sneaky Aeolian cadence in here (slowly progressing and ending at 3:09 with an F 2nd inv chord) and I just couldn't NOT comment on that because DAMN that just made my heart soar.

Absolutely zero musical training here. But I’ve learned a lot from reactors and also from comments. I wanted to thank you for putting timestamps on your explanations so that I can go back and hear what you’re saying. Because reading it means nothing to me because I don’t have the background. But if I hear it I might be able to recognize it next time. (Especially for the Aeolian cadence because I know Peter Barber is going to make a comment about it too and I want to be able to anticipate that! 😊). Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us. 🤗

Cesar's and Anthony's acting chops were really shown in this one. I almost cried. 1:16 to 1:19 I love how Geoff says he wants to have control, while having the perfect control of his vocals. Layne's beatboxing keeps the song rolling completely smoothly. Very good on Layne's part! The production and the depths of emotions is INSANELY GOOD! I'm OBSESSED 😍 2:13 to 3:42 really shows this too 💙💙💜💜
