This is part 2 of the Breath of Fire II Creepy Bad Endings episode. See Creepy Bad Endings # 13 for part 1.
I've wondered in the past if I had OCD, and I think this video confirms it. I really had no idea it was going to end up this long. But hey, this game affected me pretty badly, so it's good to get it all off my chest.
Whilst it should be obvious that a series called "Creepy Bad Endings" will contain major spoilers, this video reveals the plot of most of the game, so don't say I didn't warn you.
Bad Endings. I don't know about anyone else, but they terrify me. Just when the hero(es) thought everything was finally right, just when it looked like peace had finally returned to the world/city/etc, something had to happen that, at best, creates a bitter sweet victory and, at worst, spoils everything and the enemies win after all your struggles. Sure, Game Overs CAN be scary too, but more often than not, all you'll get when you run out of lives is a simple "Game Over" message, possibly with the option to try again. Bad endings don't give you any second chances, you screwed things up for everyone and you must pay dearly...

Patty IS Yua. in one of the bad ending, with Katt in the party as second char, after Ryu turned into dragon, Katt and friends would mourn after him. Then when no one else is there, Patty showed up and tried to awaken Ryu while calling him stupid brother. That settled this matter about Patty's identity.

wow, that best ending was great, except for the part where patty never comes back to the surface, so... EVEN BETTER BEST ENDING!: after meeting a few side quest requirements, involving patty, then at the end just before you leave the dragon village, Patty talks to you, congratulating you etc. but then Bow calls for you saying " come on hurry up Ryu!" then patty realizes who you are, they hug and leave together, then the rest is mostly the same.

Kinda the same here. I first thought Patty was Yua, but then thought maybe this was just a dream & Patty was Ryu's mom (it does start after you close your eyes in hopes of seeing her). Of course, once I found Garner, it eliminated the latter guess & solidified the former.

I've always been sceptical about Patty being Yua because Patty looks to be the same age as Ryu, 16. Yua was 3 the last time we saw her, so after 10 years, she would be 13 and with Patty,s concept art, she DOES NOT look like a 13 year old. If she was Yua, why would she change her name? Ryu didn't change his name to something like Dylan or something else. So why would Yua change her name to Patty?!

And yet you are still sceptical? Also, the changing of name. So only because Ryu didn't change his name that means Yua cannot change hers? You are just nitpicking there, obviously Ryu cannot change his name because YOU CHOSE it from the start, unlike Yua's/Patty. For Yua changing her name could represent a new start, but again, not because Ryu doesn't do it means nobody else in the game can't do it. If she hadn't changed her name then Ryu would know she is Yua from the first moment her name is mentioned, and the OBVIOUS purpose here was precisely that he mustn't recognize her. 🤦‍♂️

31:03 OMFG. I DID BASICALLY THE SAME THING AND KILLED OFF GANER ON MY FIRST TIME, AND LOOK HOW THAT ONLY MADE ME LOVE THE GAME SO MUCH MORE ALL THOSE YEARS AGO! The saddest part about Valerie is that she had to,for all those years maintain her distance from Ryu, Yua and Ganer even after the Aruhameru Attack, just to keep the Destined Child, HER Child, to follow his True Fate. That hurts, just to think about, even more so when you think that she had to talk to her own Son as an Outsider Hero, and not as a mother would to her own child, until just before her very end.

I think Barubary is just the king of the demons. Evan is a godly being (an evil one). Barubary isn't really on Evan's side, but just wants to be on the winning side, he knows about the prophecy of the destined child, so if Ryu really is it, he wants to be sure and test him. That's why he asks to fight you alone. Also, I wonder if Township is somehow related to the Miria station in BoF3 or Obelisk in BoF1

@TFoster2211 I don't think 4 is in the same timeline as 1-3. If I remember correctly, the dragons in 4 (as well as Deis, or Bleu as she was called in the translations of 1 and 2) are stated to have come from another world, which I assume is the world of BoF1-3.

Mina's sacrifice was the part that affected me the most when playing this game. The fact that she realized what would happen and chose to destroy everything that made her herself just so you would be able to fly to the enemy stronghold really stuck with me. It also really made me sad when the demons escape from Gate and prevent you from using her to fly for the rest of the game. It made me feel really bad that it almost seemed like her sacrifice no longer meant anything. It also sucks if you didn't save Ganer and make the Town Ship fly, since that means you no longer have any way to fly and just have to hoof it on foot anywhere you might want to go.

(Spoiler warning for the end of this game) Before Ryu became a dragon to guard the place, I read that dialogue and i was like NO. DONT DO THIS TO ME! And when he did it I was sort of mad. Thank Goodness That Wasn’t the only ending. After all that Ryu Suffered through, he deserves to live A life as normal. After watching this for an hour, I felt freaking heartcrushed.

Oops, I got confused earlier. I thought the well referred to that part near the beginning of the game where you had to save villagers. (Which is unavoidable) You get the "Ryu turns into a dragon" ending if Township isn't flying. As for the spell that brings your friends back, it's impossible to beat Deathevn without it.

Good fucking lord, this has to be my favorite CBE episode. I'm definitely not that big on the Breath of Fire series but damn, 2-4 have their moments. No, the footage from this video is from a SNES emulator. I did actually experience the game crashing on the Wii Virtual Console version. I had just rescued the whale, was about to save the game at Guntz, but when I landed on the island, the screen went black, I couldn't do anything and the music was still playing in the background really fast. Kinda funny, but also very annoying, because I had to go through the whole dungeon again. Was that what happened to you?

It's my series, I came up with the idea for it, so I don't see why I can't let it evolve, or why I should strict it by any boundaries. I got to say thank you. I've always thought this to be the weakest of the first 4 titles. So when I finished this back in the day I was like I'm done with it period. Yet I did pick this up both on the Wii and the physical copy I saw in a shop close to my home so something did register to me. Oh, this (and the previous of course) video was sooo good, because you unfolded the whole plot for us to see. But what the hell, I noticed too that no one gave a crap about Yua. Ok, she was a weirdo as a child, but she was a descent character! Of course she was Patty, she had the same hair as Ryu and Valerie after all. I'm truly blessed to be introduced to the JRPG genre by this game. It was an extremely emotional journey, and i was DEFINETLY NOT prepared for the mature themes it tackled, and without doing it so awkwardly like some others i later found out do. The OST is just so good, one of my all time favourite and Damn, Ryu Bateson... is one of the best silent protagonists of JRPG gaming, if not all genres. Favourite Tracks, and by God are there so many from this Franchise for me: Memories, Our Journey, You Must Live, Fishing Max, White Wings, Left Unspoken, Dying Corpse, What it Takes to be a Hero, The Closing of Dragon's Eye at the End of the Tale, Thank You Everyone [Credit Song]

I have to say that was probably one of the most well written games I've ever seen summarized. Not only did the summary make me hate the main villains but I got a little teary eyed when Ryu became the dragon and Bow was trying to wake him up. I could hear the desperation in my head and can only imagine what the impact would be if I played all the way through. Also as a suggestion try out Radiant Historia, it has plenty of bad endings you could cover.

@AliB247 Haven't played the GBA before, but from what I've heard, it's sounds like the better version. I've also seen that there's a picture of Patty looking at the gate (with neither a dragon or Township blocking it) at the end of the game if you get the best ending. I was going to talk about it, but I couldn't find it anywhere.

This is an AMAZING game (At least STORY wise.) that I was glad to experience with your insight added! When I first saw your Creepy Bad Endings #13 I remembered about Breath of Fire 2 and how I never actually beat the game ( which I love since forever) so I took it and started playing again and somehow I got the best ending at the first try (maybe just because I knew there was a bad ending, so I played trying not to screw up) and man, what a game, there are a lot of deep and beautiful moments indeed, but there's something extremely disturbing about the bad ending, 10 years... becoming blind...

Nope. I haven't tried myself, but I've heard that if you reduce his 65,000 or so HP to zero, it just gets fully restored every time. (The same happens if you try to battle Deathevn with only Ryu) Even if there's a way to kill him with cheats, the game will probably continue as if he won.

Dragons are the good guys in breath of Fire, so it makes sense that they can seal demons and shit away. But what the fuck is landing a pile of dirt on the doors going to do compared to dragon magic? Sounds like the "best" ending is the worst one even if Ryu lives.

This...was awesome. Do you do other game stories like this? In a ROM or a rental or SOMETHING I played this game a long time ago. Not all of it, though, but I KNOW I remember the girl with the staff. It's cool seeing the whole story, and your "storytelling" is awesome (though it'd be cool to see more boss killing blows. :D) If you do more game story sumaries like this, I'd LOVE to watch them. In the Gameboy remake there is an ending scene of Patty looking down on the village after she ran and was hiding in the forest.

So what does that she can actually see Ryu again? Because the ending here implies they've been separated forever.

I did some reading and apparently that woman that you see that looks like Yua is actually someone else (and the woman you confuse her with actually points that out when you talk to her and says she'a not her lol). So no apparently Yua doesn't get separated from Ryu. I don't like how they don't give her much attention at the end of the game tho.
